Not sure if anyone else has already mentioned this before, but could the eraser on the Custom Brush be triggered by a hot key combination?
Say, pressing Ctrl while using the brush converts it to a rubber.
The shift key seems well utilised by Artrage, so I'm not sure what the trigger key would be ...
Just a thought ...
