View Full Version : Custom brush like poured paint?

Hello everybody!
I've been trying to make an uneven line or outline, which looks like uneven amounts of paint or ink are coming out of my tool - kind of like a thick, uneven outline with highlights when done with 100% metallic on. I want it to look a bit like a poured outline. The closest I am getting is by using the oil paint brush with 100% each pressure and loading & 0% thinners and then smoothing with a knive on 0% pressure and 100% softness.
93682
Number 1 is the original oil paint, number 2 is where I smoothed it. I would like it to be really glossy.
Number 3 is where I smoothed over the oil paint tube, which looks more like what I want but I don't just want a thick streak of paint.
Number 4 is the original oil paint smoothed over with the knife. I works better here on the slimmer line. The dimensional look is what I am aiming for but much more glossy.

I hope somebody can help :rolleyes:.

Thanks a million!
Eva

Hello EvaBridget and welcome to the ArtRage forums:)
I’m thinking the Gloop Pen might be your best bet. At least as a starting point as it’s quite responsive at changing width based on pen pressure.
A;
1: Try the Gloop preset Liquid Flow, using a metallic colour to draw out the “poured” paint on it’s own layer.
2: Go to Edit > Layer Effects. And in the panel the opens activate Emboss and tweak settings to taste.
Possible downside to this method is that the canvas texture will show through the paint some.

B;
This is more involved!
1: Same as 1 above.
2: With the layer still selected go to Layers > Select Layer Contents.
3: While the contents are selected change to the Glitter Tube. I used a lot of Glitter set to a small size and went over everything with a high metallic colour.
4: Change now to the Palette Knife tool and select preset Instant Blur as a starting point and tweak settings to taste. I’m thinking a low Pressure, high Softness combination perhaps.
5: Now “rub” over the paint to smooth it off.
When happy, Deselect the layer contents, key combo cmd+D.
If you want to play further, (As I did!) I then did the following.
Duplicated the finished layer and set the duplicate’s Bump Blend mode to Add and then merge it down with the original paint layer. For a bit more body.
And then used the Emboss Layer Effect.
Hopefully some of this will prove useful to you and maybe give you something to experiment with.

I tried putting this final image in my post above, but looks like there's a limit to the number or total size of attachments you can have in one post:confused:

A really quick way of achieving this is to use the Gloop Pen, then locking the transparency, and shading it on the bottom with the spray, and highlight at the top. You could fiddle more with highlights if you want more realism.

This took me two minutes on the Ipad.

Friday evening - time to experiment :D!

Hi markw, I never realised there are emboss & shadow etc. options...!

Copespeak, I love your idea and it is defintely an option to tweak the gloss & add highlights, thank you!!

Here are my versions of markw's A and B options. I haven't achieved the smoothness markw has achieved but kinda like the speckled effect. Copespeak's method will enter stage at this point to tweak a few more highlights:
