View Full Version : Critiques wanted... do the raindrops work?

Hi, This is a very typical scene in the Pacific Northwest, where we get a lot of rain! It was something that I wanted to do in real watercolor, but I did it in Artrage first. Then I got the crazy idea for the raindrops. I kind of like the idea of it, because while it looks like it could be a "real" watercolor, it would be almost impossible to get the raindrops in true, transparent watercolor. In art rage I did it on a separate layer.

It reminded me of a few years ago, I went with another artist to a beach community art weekend. A watercolor painter whose work I really like, was trying to get the effect of raindrops by spraying some sort of clear polymer on the back of the glass on his framed prints. I thought it was pretty clever, but the other artist I was with thought it was just terrible. She thought it was just terrible that he was selling prints, and then doing such a commercial kitchy/cutsy thing to his work?? A TRAVESTY!!!! I feel if you can't have fun with art, what is that point! There were a lot of tourists in town, and if he felt he could sell more by selling prints and doing something different, than all the more power to him!!!

Anyway, I decided to try and add raindrops on another layer to this so here is my question is, do you think they work? any suggestions for the piece in general?

I really like it, raindrops and all. I grew up in the PNW, and visit a lot. This looks just like it would driving down I-5 or I-90 over the pass. Really beautiful!

I think the raindrops work wonderfully Elaine! I am assuming that you are looking out of the car window down the road..

IF that is the case.. one thing that might help clarify the picture would be a bit of perspective.. which might be obtained by letting us see part of the car (The hood.. or a wiper blade.. or the inside of the roof.. or dash.. etc) Just my opinion. But it's terrific just as it is

My thoughts are over on WetCanvas forums as I saw you posted this there too. Once again good job, it reads well to me as raindrops on a windshield, great effect. :)

Thank you all. lori99320 hit it right on the head, it is I-5. I was thinking it was I-84 out in the Gorge, but it was a friend on mine who took the photo and she insists it is I-5. I have her permission to use it for painting purposes.

You painted this rainy view masterfully and You raindrops are perfectly emulated and don't look "mechanic" nor "virtual additions" at all.
Welcome and congrats!
