My computer started to download the 8.1 upgrade again! This time the splash screen didn't allow me to click 'Remind me later' the only options were it would start the upgrade in X number of hours - the longest delay I could get was 4hours.
So I went looking for the update that allows the splash screen reminder and deleted it. However, I then had to do a restart for the adjustment to take effect. With the restart the installation of the unwanted upgrade to 8.1 was initiated.
This time there was only one problem but a big one - it affected how webpages opened or not at all. Mr. Google told me that this is a common problem that Microsoft has not addressed. However I found a solution on Whirlpool forums.
The solution works for me - touch wood - and I post it here so that it might help others.
1. Go to start screen and type in command, and COMMAND PROMPT should then be displayed below what you just typed in.
2. Right click on COMMAND PROMPT and click on RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR in displayed options menu – this is important as if you are not running as administrator the following command will fail.
3. In the command panel that will now be displayed enter: netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
4. Press enter.
