I call this illustration "Lonely Mr Bug" - Mr Bug finds himself all alone and searching the forest for his fair lady bug friend. Where is she he asks?

"Mr Bug" is a 3D model I created using Groboto 3D ver 3.5. An untextured render of Mr Bug was brought into Artrage where I colorized the critter and than hand painted the background using ArtRage 4.0 and my trusty Wacom Intuos tablet...

Cheers

Mediterranean of my mind, a place where the seekers, dreamers, lovers and loners converge and spend idle time dreaming of their past sins or thinking about future accomplishments....

I modeled the Cafe Village and the buildings in the distance in Hexagon3D. The arch I modeled in Groboto3D.

A digital illustration based on a 3D render and some digital painting techniques. Software used Vue Complete 2014, DAZ3D Studio, Photoshop Elements 11, ArtRage 4...

Great! Love the time of day on the pastoral with the kids and sheep. I half expect them to be moving in a story.

I would make a comment since you're using ArtRage to enhance the 3D stuff, I would recommend that you break up where your objects meet the ground. The pool table clean bases imply a flatness to both the ground and base of the objects indicating an artificial relationship.

In the real world, you would see at the very least irregularity of the grass or plants or objects or slight variance of the dirt breaking up that base (to our eye). It's a small detail that you can easily enhance when you have your 2D picture. In the 3D world, it may matter or not, depending on your style and the degree of illusion of reality you're going for. In AR you can sample the color from the ground that's already touching the bases of the objects so any breaking up the edges should be fairly seamless.

Oh, and PS: that breaking up the ground would also be for the cast shadows, depending on the angle and nature of the ground.

A few years ago I purchased "The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics" by Freddie E Williams II - http://www.amazon.ca/DC-Comics-Guide-Digitally-Drawing/dp/0823099237/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403319228&sr=8-1&keywords=freddie+E+williams+II

The author mentioned he often uses Google Sketchup models when drawing for comic books. He explained he modeled the buildings and town that is often used in one of the books he was drawing for. By creating a 3D model it can be used over and over again at many different angles and giving a consistency to surroundings throughout the book....

Cool! Very tough looking. It's all got a great fantasy medieval feel as if from a video game. Love the colors and camera angle. He feels very solid and muscular.

It's a really great piece Kenmo! Bravo!

The detail that catches my eye a little is how you have the rigid metal breastplate armor twisting with his supple body around the stomach. But in a fantasy world with magic and so on, such things can happen where materials behave as designed by the forgers and armorers and mages. Very cool.

Really cool staging, though for me the girl is less interesting than that stunning environment. Maybe it means I'm getting older. . . But that's an amazingly dramatic and rather ornamental bridge. I saw an old anime a long time ago where they had a castle that was combined with more modern stuff as well and it had a particular modern fantasy flavor as a result. I had to look up the origins of the ribbed umbrella and it's anywhere between the 17-1800s depending on which umbrella you're considering the first of its kind. So for me, when I see a castle and a woman who looks somewhat Victorian, it's like getting 2 periods for the price of one and it creates an interesting mix. I'm sure that the Europeans would say "naturally". But it's all so removed from my present world and I go back in movies where they usually isolate it in a time and kinda hold to that with all their detailing. So when I see it mixed somewhat, it's a whole new thing for me, which I can appreciate.

If it were up to me, and depending on how much time you want to put into your rendering in touch up, all the trees on the right side of the river which are of varying distance from us are sort of blending together into a single undifferentiated mass, defying clarity of depth. Owing to overlap I can kind of figure out where stuff is, but I have to work at it. As such, you may want to consider grouping your depths and clarifying depth of field according to values, especially when they're the same kinds of trees with similar color leaves. Eg, the bigger close to us tree could have some light hitting it while the far segment on the other side of the bridge (still on the right) could have a different lighting or color or whatever. Owing to the complexity of the tree models you used, you would perhaps leave this one and when you do the next, try to light it in a way where it would separate somehow.

But that's just a small thing for all the juicy detail and elements in this great picture. What a terrific image. Really first rate, Kenmo. . .Bravo!:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::):):):):):)

Elephant was modeled in Sculptris, the dungeon modeled in Hexagon3D ver 2.5. Both models were textured in 3DCoat ver 3. The scene was then rendered in e-onsoftware's Vue. The image was further detailed in ArtRage with some color correction in Photoshop.

My inspiration for this image was one of my favorite fantasy stories, Robert E. Howard's "Tower of the Elephant" in his Conan series...

This was a reworking of an image I did a few years ago. I added the rat via DAZ Studio and Photoshop.

What a curious image! It's a little like Dumbo's Circus has fallen on lean times. And when they came to town, set up, but were unable to pay their nut, and they get thrown into debtors prison, he and his buddy the mouse. My guess is that they're going to bust out and fly away. His flappy ears look like they're still serviceable.

Took a lot of imagination, no doubt. I like the idea of using 3-D models to paint from. There's also the possibility of painting on them and manipulating them as well. I'm not quite sure what your process was on this, but I think the outcome is really nice and clear what's going on and thus making it about the story. And I know you have a great fondness for story-telling illustrators and painters. So I think on that level you've really reached it. Well done!

Currently selling for $19.95. despite it's low price it is a very capable 3D modeler but sadly has not be updated in at least 6 years causing frequently crashes in Windows 7. Not sure what the future will be for Hexagon3D.

I've been busy with my digital photography, I must have taken over 5,000 photos last spring, summer and fall. Not all of them keeps but I do shot in RAW meaning any keepers I have to process, so it is very time consuming. I thought I would give Lightroom & Photoshop a night off. So I fired up my old friend Artrage only to find out there is an update....YAY...

Grobo-car - My vision of a hot rod of the future powered by a clean energy source and has dual wheels in the rear, making it a 6 wheel vehicle.

A car which has performance and energy efficient. I created the car in Groboto which is a 3D modeling application. I then brought the base render into Artrage 4.5 where I painted over the image and applied a gradient. I used Photoshop for color correction and applied a texture to the background and added some noise to the car.

Cool stuff! Hahaha. I had not before seen the elephant with the spittoon -- or piss pot, or whatever. I can just hear it now with him rehearsing his speech on how he lost 200 pounds in 4 years, peppering it with <hock. . . spitooi. . .DING!> (USA Political humor as the elephant is the symbol of one of the major parties.)

Nice futuristic car. A couple 3D images coming into your thread - one whimsical, the other mechanical. Cool.

Nice work Ken, great to hear from you again, since you live in such a beautiful area no wonder you are so busy with photographs. try putting one of your photos into ArtRage as a tracing image and then you can paint it using its colors and the brush preset of your choice. although I would tweak any photo to add some saturation etc to make it pop more as a painting.... just a thought...

I finally found a home for the 1929 Ford Model A Business Coupe and created this image. And thought up a little story to go with it....

On Christmas Eve of yesteryear, a father drives his Model A Ford home from work, stopping along the country road to forage for a suitable Christmas tree.

A young lad in the company of his companion dog, pulls his sled homeward with a cargo of a freshly cut fir tree.

Everything was sketched and painted in ArtRage 4.5 except for the boy & dog. They were rendered in DAZ & exported as a jpeg. and painted over in ArtRage. I did use in ArtRage some custom stencils I created for the trees. Matter of fact the stencils are available on this form in the supplies section. The Model A was created in Artrage using reference photos from the net.

Photoshop CC 2015 was used for some color correction and resizing.

Cheers

What fun! Love experimenting with 3 and 2D. I really like that old Model T (?) in the winter scene. It fits with some of that the old time graphic arts treatment where we have a straight on side shot without perspective. It feels antique in a way, which is a very good thing when thinking of tradition.

Happy Newfoundland to you and a Merry Christmas as well.

Billy Bishop glances over his shoulder at the plumenting German plane he has just shot down while an approaching German pilot opens fire from above.

William Avery Bishop is credited with 72 victories in the air and was a Victoria Cross recipient of the First World War. He is considered Canada's top pilot of WWI.

In this illustration I have Bishop flying the French built Nieuport 17 with the top mounted Lewis machine gun. The Royal Flying Corps found the fuselage mounted Vickers guns to be unreliable and often had them omitted. The Vickers machine gun was synchronised to fire through the propeller.

Artrage, Painter & Photoshop used in this creation....

It looks like a picture, but it couldn't be, since color aerial pictures didn't exist during IWW!

In that period our ace, Francesco Baracca (34 victories against Austrian pilots and shot down from an unexpected shooting from ground) flew a Nieuport too, a dash eleven though, we were building under licence then.
I tell You this for a curiosity: the Ferrari prancing horse was actually exactly his personal arms painted on the plane and was resumed by Enzo Ferrari in his memory.

To get the thick paint textures, paint underneath the imported image with thick oil paint, and it will show through above as brush strokes. Or you can paint directly into the imported layer with an empty (0% loading) Oil Brush or a palette knife.

Delightfully alive and vigorous. I really like how you doctored it with saturation with the variations on the colors optically and brush strokes. Also a fine composition. Well done Kenmo. Glad to see you're still relating your area through art.

Also glad to hear your dad is doing well.:cool::cool::cool::cool:

Yes, good to see your paintings again - very vibrant. I feel for your father - I have had both hips and one knee replaced and totally recommend the surgery. My first hip was 24 yrs ago and still going strong. My knee was replaced just last year.

Looks like a painting all the way. Saves some work for sure on the dandelion but I love the painterly background. Nice and . . . well, painterly. Good colors too.:cool::cool::cool::cool:

Yes. Been OK. But busy with my Dad who's 89 and having health issues (knee & hip pain) but other than that Dad is fine. Great memory. Been watching a lot of tv and NHL hockey now that it's recommenced since COVID. Been doing some photography but no car shows due to being closed due to COVID. Also some 3D modeling.

Here's an image I just completed today using Photoshop CC 2020 & ArtRage 6. 99507

Nice, I really like the use of texture and colours.

Like an old illustration style from a car magazine in the 1960s. Cool. Making me feel young and you can't put a price on that.

Take Me Home Chevy Pickup

After a hard day at the factory a man heads home in his Chevy pickup truck.

Using Corel Painter 2019 and a photo I took, I cloned painted the photo, then used Topaz Impression to add more brush strokes that I could not create using Painter. I then added more hand crafted brush stocks using my Wacom Tablet & ArtRage 6.

Not sure why the boat image is appearing below the truck. I tried a couple of times to remove it and could not.

Those look great, Kenmo! A nice departure from your customary environments and cars. Now you have drivers! Good stuff too.

And very happy you were able to delete the pic you didn't want up. Nice to see you doing art again. I must confess I envy you for having played hockey all that time. We didn't have much ice skating in Southern California so we never really paid attention. But if you could play until 52yo, wow. Great fun, no doubt.

Good to see you doing art again, or at least posting some of whatever you may have been doing. Enjoy retirement.

Crash in the Desert

Late in the day as evening nears a futuristic fly car has to make an unexpected landing on an stretch of desert highway in the south western USA.
I modeled the vehicle in Groboto3D and furthered detailed in the 3D sculpting app "3DCoat" which is a ZBrush type program. The rest of the image I used Photoshop CC & ArtRage 6.

Great action in the space ship one. I can see a correlation between that and the boat you painted -- with the story for each in my mind -- both beached or soon to be.

I very much like both styles. I've always been a sucker for artsy approaches because I know how difficult it can be. So I admire the successes when I'm lucky enpough to stumble over them online or in the real world. As such, I really like your boat. There looks like a number of levels that got different treatments which engages me like a mystery.

And of course you've always been great at realism and vehicles with that space craft or futuristic advancement on Earth. The angle looks like the pilot is really wrestling with the controls to not crash. . . and he may well be losing. Good story in that too. Both offer that kind of pull to the viewer.

As to So. Calif. being one of the meccas for flashy rides, you bet it is. Used to see all kinds of vehicles that one film or TV production contracted for just driving down the street where I used to work long ago. I would often hear one of the guys sitting beside a window with a view of the street shout out a comment, and we would all rush over to see what trippy ride was going by. Some, like a super long stretch limo was low like a standard station wagon but as long and unbending as a bus but more in length like a semi with several axles to keep it from buckling and I marveled that anyone could navigate turns on the street. Might be fun on a trip to Vegas, but I imagine more for a show as a symbol of excess. Definitely a specialty vehicle that.

But now the auto trade shows often are centered around low riders with all the excess flashy bling. It's truly an art form.

Keep painting.

Wow... I just found these custom brushes on this site and I am truly impressed with them. These are must haves and ArtRage's answer to Corel Painters 2021 heavy oil brushes.

Using these brushes I was able to add the finishing touches to this illustration I've been working on and off for over a month or so...

Society is blind, they dwell among us.

Really nice. Gives a nod to Van Gogh but it's got your own metallic, shimmering vibe to it all the while it's of an old vessel. It has a unique feel, but consistent with your other rotting boat painting regarding a look and feel. You've given it feel of cross genres between nostalgia as well as tricked out automobile finishes. Would hang nicely along side images of restored automobiles. Very much a success. Well done, Kenmo.

Beautiful lady with blue eyes, blue earring and mole on left hand side of her nose.

Most of the most beautiful ladies have blue eyes and a few are lucky to have a mole on the side of their nose.

Encuentro geniales tus pinturas, sobre todo la densidad que logras con los pinceles...!!! Dan deseos de "tocar" esas pinceladas de óleo muy denso, cargado, y los pinceles que dejan "huella"...

Loving this new direction in your art kenmo.

Also - off topic - I wanted to mention that many years ago we changed planes at Halifax airport when visiting friends on PEI. Our connection was late so a fully seated aircraft was waiting for us on the tarmac. (They were intending to send our luggage to Sydney Nova Scotia instead of Sydney Aus). We enjoyed our stay in the Maritimes and everytime I visit your page it reminds me.:)
