Yeowza! I bet you're a whiz with gouache too. . . The deliberate marks that make up this piece show great familiarity with painting birds, unless I'm mighty mistaken. . . and probably expert at painting lots of other stuff as well. Super color, super variety, really descriptive. Welcome indeed.

Thanks to alls.

I started painting small birds with Artage ipad as an exercise of precision, working the detail, exercicing the hand. I've painted a few, only birds that I recognize in my area, from pictures on the net. No oriole, but add it to the list...

Thanks to all.

A very common and urban bird. (Sparrow, gorrión, txolarrea ...)
This bird is not particularly beautiful and the artistic result is not spectacular in terms of color, but lives very close to us and is entitled to be painted.

Artrage Ipad + Adonit Jot Pro (+ finishing touches with another app).

I love sparrows ('spriggys' we call them!) and I think they deserve to be painted as well. They are around our house at the moment feeding on seed plants, and I was looking out through the window at them only yesterday wondering how to photograph them for a drawing or two.

Your little bird is very well done. I would maybe crisp up his edges a bit?

Makes it feel like a proper portrait of someone special as an individual. Should be hanging in a bank, where this is the a portrait of the branch manager.

Problem is he's likely to have taken all the goodies in the vault and flown off. I shouldn't think he looks like the trustworthy type. Looks more like a larcenous opportunist to me.

I do not like working with yellow, so I have gotten other colors trying not to break the range. I have also decided not to paint a colored background.

Wonderful. You don't like working yellow? You did such a nice job with it.

Yes, yellow has its own set of challenges with the darkening of it without the color going dead or greenish or some other less desirable tint that throws the local color recognition off. White looks just fine. But if you did want to add a color in the background to liven it up a little, you could do a single small brushstroke of turquoise and a tiny spot of orange down by the perch merely as a counterpoint to really show off the color of the yellow of the bird and imply some depth.

You could try it out on a separate layer and then spin the color wheel, and saturation and value levels, to see how you can get it to where it's satisfying without being to intrusive. I've done that many a time where I keep a color isolated and play with the adjustments of it on a separate layer. Mostly it works. Sometimes I realize that no color at all is the answer too. But for me it's always worth it to learn from the experience and grow my color sense.

Anyway, very much enjoying your work.

Another beautiful bird to add to the collection. I'm always astounded at what some people can do with an Ipad. I have a 7" android tablet and there is no way I can paint with it - perhaps when AR is available I might have a chance.

Ostogar
09-06-2014, 01:36 AM
Enug: Thanks for the comment.
I suppose AR for Ipad will not be as complete as AR 4. For some final touches also use another artistic app.
Increasing the zoom on Ipad screen and using a fine stylus Adonit Jot Pro can do many things to detail. At least I try ...

Very cool. I also wonder how it is you're so good with Birds. If you were in England and you were this good with "birds" you'd be up to your ears in women. :D:p:rolleyes::cool::cool::cool::)

Anyway, this one is looking super. I think it's a wise choice when possible to have birds with striking markings. It always adds to the interest of the illustration and to be able to do it this well and shows a real virtuosity with paint.

D Akey

Nice. Slick feeling in that it seems like it's speeding along despite its still pose. I think that comes as a result of the speeding long and slightly blurry marks that are often used to indicate speed. And with a bird it's definitely appropriate to imply speed. Interesting to have that feel for a perched pose. Anyway, as always, I really appreciate your painting. Go man go!!!!!

In a word, Fabulous!

I love your use of color (backgrounds) and the detail that comes and goes in local color washes. You have an expert grasp of color. I've worked in multiple media and worked as a professional photographer as well. I've seen lots of computer-generated art, but, I think that your work is the very best I've seen in computer-generated watercolor effect.

In the world of fly tying there are imitative patterns-- flies that are known for amazing realism. Then, there are patterns that behave like the natural insect. They are "impressionist" patterns.

You have given your birds that same quality. They have the impression of feathers mixed with detail highlights that tie everything together masterfully. Brilliant!

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Mickey
