I haven't done any graphite drawings lately, being totally obsessed with AR. This was a practice one of my Dova sleeping ... on not too terrific paper. I scanned it and put it into Art Rage, coloured the grey and then put a sepia wash over it. Now I am quite please with the result.

That is well done....I like the sepia effect.

Thanks Jmac, I used to do the graphite on paper and then do a watercolour sepia wash over the top which was quite a nice effect. Doing it this way, I was able to tint the paper and the grey graphite at the same time. Interesting! :)

Robyn, I love sleeping dogs. is there anything sweeter in the world? this is a great result from your graphite work..and ok course your quite talented hand.. love the effect.. like digital AR can take a fine drawing and move it into something quite extraordinary..:cool::cool:

Wooooow. . . this is a MASTERPIECE, copespeak!!!!!!! (no kidding) GREAT technique and hand control. I LOVE the rhythm of the lines. Really great. On one hand it reminds me of an engraving or silverpoint or something like that, yet it's done with a pencil which sort of goes naturally contrary to those linear, tight parallel methods owing to the tonal nature and softness of graphite -- at least in the real world. Anyway, I love how you pushed the detail of the fur yet maintained the dominance of the overall structure of the head and doggie bits. It's forceful yet controlled like a tremendous dramatic stage oration. Brava!

Thank you all for your lovely comments and Andrea, I'm sorry to relax you so much. Hopefully it was night time in your part of the world so you could go straight to bed. :)

Mr Akey, you are a master of words and critique!

I am a great lover of a good line and needed to concentrate as I went to follow the grain of the hair. My pencil sharpener is at my side and I am constantly sharpening a fresh tip so it doesn't get too soft. One line out and you lose the effect, so the 'cute' subject, who now stands as tall as your dining table and weighs 36 kgs, was put out in the kennels with her poodley friend. Next one I will put on better paper!

Hi Steve, no no run today, that's next week, but my man will be interstate at his son's wedding, so I may not go. I did take her down to a borzoi judge, breeder and all round specialist for a going over and his opinion, and he was blown away by her quality, which was really nice. He just loved her and said he would have her 'in a flash'.

He would have to stand in line behind about 30 others.

Thank you Caesar, I'm not sure about the 'master', but I will accept the compliment. So many clever people here, it's an honour to be amongst you all. :)

Katie, the fact that she snoozed on your desktop for a while makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Thank you!

Looks like Mr Ploos painted the two guys in the horse costume -- horse's head and um . . . tail.
Not so sure they're working completely in tandem though. Could be a split up the middle any moment.

My beautiful Dova looking sooky. Graphite again and then coloured with the Gloop Pen in AR.

I didn't colour the graphite this time, but left it grey, and left the paper natural.

Hi Gary, yes I used to do a lot of pet portraits in pastel years ago, but shy away from it now I'm not chasing the dollars so much.

I was thinking I really could enjoy doing simple pencils as these are lots of fun.

Maybe ... :) :)

So you've done plenty of pet portraits in pastel pertaining to pups, pray? I believe it.

Crikey, not too shabby for a sheila. You're saying that in order to paint your sooky puppy you pen gloop in glops glibly. Well crack on paintin' Matilda. You're an inspiration and I agree. . . you would make a fortune doing pet portraits any time you say cause these got all the stuff already. GXHPainter's called it right.

". . . the camel down the road". . . You know, I really get tired of hearing people say that. . .

No wait. . . Come to think of it, I've NEVER heard anyone say that.

So which part of the zoo are you caged up in? Admit it, you're really a bike riding orangutan, right? I had you pegged as a primate, but. . . it's the company you keep. You talk like they're domestic and all. . . but there are some odd combinations rubbing noses a way down yonder. . .

Robyn... amazing... do you work from photographs? that is do you take a bunch of shots and then draw from one of them?

copespeak
03-26-2014, 08:58 AM
Yes, Gary, I take lots of photographs to reference from. You must or you don't get the authentic details. I could draw most of that from memory, but it's never the same.

I regard the photographs I take as being part of my artistic process. There are photos and then there are 'beautiful photos' IMHO.

Here is one I took last weekend. Pardon the watermark, but they are all for sale to the participants.
