View Full Version : Quick horse sketches, update 31 March

This is a very quick and rough sketch. For the first time I used my Medion graphic tablet. First I used the pencil, then tried watercolours. I wasn't too happy with them, so I used the oil brush. Looking forward to critique and comments! Hmm, I just noticed that the eye is not right. It is funny that I need to upload a piece in order to see what's wrong!

Hi Ulla, keep working on it. If you're not used to the shapes of horses, get a ref photo, even if you're not copying. The eye does need to go down, but a good effort nevertheless! :)

What copespeak said.
And thanks for putting all out there and letting us see your progress. It's inspiring.

Thanks eighty+, Robyn and byroncallas for taking the time to look and for your encouraging comments. I've got lots of reference pics, and I love horses. Have done some drawings with a "normal" pencil, but I definitely have to practise more often, and I will do.

I decided to do one horse sketch daily, at least till Easter. Here's one of a hoof:
Pencil and watercolour.

Ulla, your pencil sketches look great :)

03-27-2013, 03:05 AM
Thank you, Jean! It is awesome what you can do with Artrage. I enjoy learning new things every day and practising. Fortunately I've got 2 weeks off work, so I have the time to do it!

It is just a sketch, so I focused on the movement, on the legs (very difficult!) and on the fur colour. Used the pencil, the ink pen, oil brush and watercolour brush. Comments and critique are welcomed!

I see You're dealing with horses too and You're becoming quite proficient in these studies ...

Keep on drawing, I find that each one of your sketch is better than the previous one !

Not really - I am having fun doing them, and so this can't be penance. But it is work also, I must admit. ...

You have the proportions correct and a sense of motion.

Wonderful sketches Ulla. Animals are so hard for me to do. Great work.

Caesar, Tana123, kenmo, Geoff, Marilyn Anne, Alexandra and Pai: Thanks so much for taking the time to look and for your encouraging comments - they are very much appreciated!
Here comes the daily sketch of Thursday, 28 March:
I've always been struggling with drawing hooves, so I thought it would be good to practise drawing them...
Comments & critique are highly welcomed!

Hooves are very hard to get right, and the horse will look clumsy if they're wrong. Keep practicing. Some of those you've done work quite well.

03-30-2013, 12:09 AM
Thank you, Robyn! I'll definitely practise more drawing hooves, but now and then a horse head slips in...
Comments and critique are highly welcomed!

Another horse. It took me some time till the hooves looked a bit lilke horse hooves. ... Oh, I just noticed that one of the front legs is too long... Looks like the poor critter is twisting his leg...

Coming along nicely....

03-31-2013, 06:41 AM
I like the horse head! And the last sketch too. Seems that you are getting something more each time you practice.
I wish I could do as well :)

You are doing fine, wunderbar! You are a good student and you will find greater and greater creativity as you keep on painting.

Looking great, Ulla. Do you participate in WC's sketching and drawing forum ?

04-02-2013, 08:32 PM
Wonderful to watch you experiment and progress. Keep 'em coming. :)

Looking great, Ulla. Do you participate in WC's sketching and drawing forum ?
I tried, Jean, but digital sketches are not allowed there, they moved them over to the digital forum. And I so enjoy doing those sketches digitally. In fact artrage made me return to sketching - strange, isn't it?
And thanks everyone for your encouraging comments on my sketches. I haven't had any formal art education and discovered it after a severe personal loss. Now I am spending my free time practising, watching tutorials, reading helpful articles and learning.
