View Full Version : Male study in pencil

This is my first attempt to use the pencil tool. I would have liked a smudge stick included in the pencil tool, but had to use the palette knife with smudge, not as smooth as I would have liked with the smudge stick, but it worked well enough for now.

Please feel free to comment on my lack of ability to do a proper face, I have always struggled with that, but look at those toes and fingers! lol.

I did the following in layers:

1. Layout sketch in blue color
2. Back leg - full leg drawn completely
3. White out layer for Front leg
4. Front leg
5. Torso - full torso drawn completely
6. White out later for Front hand
7. Front arm and Front hand
8. Shadows on ground and wall. Used the blur knife for the shadows.

Thanks for looking,
Jeff "fridles" Moore

Not bad for a first go. The tools take some getting used to and it will settle in.

As to the head, I would mind your directionals. So for example, look in the photo at the angle of the profile from the base of the nose to the chin, and compare that with your drawing. It got away from you. If you can fuss over the fingers and toes, you can with the face as well. Don't talk yourself out of it because of some old programming that you're no good at faces. The face is just like anything else and can be methodically approached.

Cool process.

you are off to a great start on this figure drawing. I will say he needs a bit more junk in the trunk. somehow he lost some curve in the tush. ;) good study though.

nice figure study, getting to a facility with pencil , smudging and blending with digital is not that easy and takes some practice but this shows great promise..:)
