This is fascinating - to see the process. Thanks for taking the trouble to share in such detail, Saphire.

Thank you grayflo as you see from the pic I do a tracing of the outline first If I didn't I would get the features all in the wrong places. Not being able to see things in the whole I have to do sections at a time. Then I blow up each individual part so I can see in closer detail the way in which the hair grows and hope they all fit together LOL!

71919Thank you Geoff, coops, the fur on this one is a little more difficult to reproduce its going in every direction on the face and is very short and rough. I seem to be using the eraser quite a bit trying to get the directions to flow into each other.

Isn't it wonderful when you are observing the animal so closely, how many fine details there are? The direction of the hair, the colours in the eyes, the way the eyelids look. You are doing a terrific job.

Thank you Geoff, Shibui, Robyn.

I help moderate a photography forum, although I can't contribute anymore all my photos are fuzzy. This photo stood out in the gallery so I Pm'd the photographer to ask his permission to do a painting. It was sad to hear that Charlie as he was known was no longer alive.

This is a quote from the pm I received from the photographer.

(Quote) Charlie passed away suddenly one night this summer just before I was scheduled for another shoot with him.
He was well known for his incredible leaps across some of the gorges in Utah.

Amazing! Truly amazing!
I'm stunned at the details, this is almost leaning towards hyperrealism :).

I think i even have to be so bold to say that this might be the best painting i've seen here yet :o.

Take care.

I need some critique, I have made a few alterations to the shoulders to make the angle different to how the photographer took the shot, he was looking down on Charlie whereas I would prefer the straight on look. I have done the edit on a copy so I can change my mind. What do you think have I taken to much of the chest away.

justjean
01-25-2013, 06:55 AM
Christine, when I look at the painting the fact that the right side is not finished or does not go to the edge makes his chest look to thin but if you move him over to the right or finish his back then he looks fine your work is outstanding. :)

Hi Christine as I see it as you take some of the bulk away you have given it a younger appearance compared to the original where the spread of the chest gave it that mature look.
Its a case of either is fine depends on what you are looking for.

Thank you justjean, Geoff for your input,

I think you are right it does make the chest less bulky on the right, I think I will continue it to the edge of the screen. The reason I finished with the straight edge was so it could be cropped to 8x10, but thinking about it, it will be much better to fill the frame to allow Dave the photographer to crop as he wishes. I will also put back a little fur on the left to give the look of more bulk and muscle.

I am going to have a break for an hour and go back to it later hopefully with a fresher look. I have been working on it since early this morning altering and adding bits here and there.

Saphire, this is a wonderful portrait, truly masterclass. The only bit that stood out to me was the left side
of the neck could do with blending into the background a little, but wow.
