This may be well-known to others, but I just discovered (from Karen Bonaker - thanks!) a very nice trick to put a glaze on a painting.

If you put a white fill (100% opacity) layer on the layer above a painting and then change the blend mode of the white layer to 'multiply' and then paint on the white layer you get this very interesting glazing effect. It works with both oils and watercolour but differently.

The top painting below has no glaze and the lower one does. I think it shows best on the fruit and the bottle.
