My father was a self (made) taught artist. It took some drawing classes when his limited free time allowed. He was an active of the Academy of Railway Artists, cultural organization that once a year setting out the work of the railway workers.

Thanks a lot for your warm words...

It's amazing how You may find great art pulsing and blooming in the heart of special people independently from what they actually do to live and support their families. Looking forward to Your nexts scans!

He didn't get formal education, but he took over and over the last year of basic school, even he went without shoes to the school, just because his desire to keep going to the only school he could go on those times.

After he retired from Ferrocarriles de Chile, he had more time to do what he loved: drawing and painting.
He painted what he saw: portraits, people, peaches, glasses and bottles on a table, kitchen-ware, hands (he did so perfect hands...).
He painted on what he found: the back of the door of a closet, wood, any kind of any paper. This sketch was made on the backside of a calendar. Those calendars made to hang on the walls.
He painted with what he found: in this case, the sketch was made with the most cheap pen, those known as "birome".

The story of my grandfather is quite amazing, at least for me :)
And the portrait is for his mother in law, not his mother. He lost his mother very early.
Thank you for your comments :)

After he had been painting and showing his work for a while, the town where he had born, Melipilla, gave him a diploma. I am enclosing a link to it. In it, they called him "Son of Melipilla": https://picasaweb.google.com/105163630814992617111/Antes#5745345634171973106

During his activities as a railway worker, he gathered the most amazing stories. Among them, there is one i kept in my eyes just as if i could see it: The workers of south (patagonia, Chile) throwing themselves to the train, as from the train: Vagón de la cultura ("culture vagon") my grandfather and a priest, among others, were trhowing them old newspapers, old magazines, and some books.
