Not quite so far back in time, around the 1950's when there where still some good clock and watchmakers still around,I am still amazed when I see the beautiful workmanship in a good old fusee driven clock or watch...anyway I'm rabbiting on, here's the picture

This tells such a wonderful story Jack, from the clocks on the wall all at the same time and the deep concentration of the clockmaker. Its brilliant and would grace any book. :)

This is great Jack and so authentic, we had a family friend who was a watchmaker and my dad would take me there for a visit.
All those clocks on the wall especially if there were a few cuckoo ones amongst them all chiming etc at the same time, well almost.
A lost art in this throw away society we have now.

situate this painting in "Sherlock Holmes" era, and you have a story of "The mystery of the "Clockmaker"

EB and PAT..Thanks for your kind words..I actually used to help a clock and watch man, down to making missing parts, restoring worn pivots ,repainting grandfather clock dials, that sort of thing,a very interesting period in my life, unfortunately he died, but before he did,I learned a great deal from him...Thanks for your replies....Jack.
