View Full Version : One hue.

From the colour picker, click the small up-arrow to the right of the metalic option. From that popup menu, choose the 'LS/H picker'.
From the vertical hue picker, choose your hue.

Now, when you paint you're only allowed to choose variations on the hue from the larger curved area of the colour picker. So you can choose any variation of lightness or richness of your one hue.

What can you paint?

04-27-2006, 11:45 AM
Here's a 30 minute one hue. I noticed hue shifts happen when you blend colors though, making the image richer and more vibrant than if you simply colorized the image luminance with a single hue. Nice Andy. :)

04-27-2006, 12:45 PM
Ooo, nice and warm. Love the lighting.

04-27-2006, 12:47 PM
using blues from the colour wheels

04-27-2006, 12:50 PM
Ooo, cool and cool!

04-27-2006, 01:24 PM
this is a great idea! nice work so far! can't wait to get home and get started on mine!

04-27-2006, 02:34 PM
My goodness, you lot are quick off the mark! :)

Both pieces look very natural to me, which is interesting! I think the scenes really work well with the limited colour space.

04-29-2006, 04:56 AM
I think this is a neat thread and all of these hue paintings are cool.

This was about 25 minutes.

04-29-2006, 06:09 AM
Fashmir: Yours looks lovely. Very warm and inviting. :)

Did this for the self-portrait challenge a few of us are doing on CGTalk. Felt like doing a pure value study in sepia-ish, and then I pop over here and see this little activity. :)

It's a Zoolander reference, in case you were wondering. ;) Photoref'd, since I can't actually hold that face for very long at all. :p Single hue, and my base palette was of pretty much the same saturation.

Hi Lotekk,

I love these sepia portraits, you're very good.

Do you always look that serious?

Aged P
04-29-2006, 06:19 AM
Space, The Final Front Ear!

I sent this before and it vanished.

04-29-2006, 06:20 AM
Thanks, Aged P! :) Nice paint, too!

Do you always look that serious?

Not in the least. :) The "look" came from Ben Stiller (http://www.dangpow.com/~dayjob/zoolander.jpg)'s Zoolander (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0196229/). ;)

04-29-2006, 09:07 AM
Oh yeah, LoTekk - I recognized that look! I look forward to the calendar of The Different Looks of LoTekk ;)

Very cool portrait!

AgedP I love the glowing lights and soft colours mixed with the harder metals. What bit fell off?

04-29-2006, 09:07 AM
Great work everyone.
Yeesh, I have not had this program for 24 hours and I'm already obsessed.
And I hope it's an obsession that lasts.

04-29-2006, 09:14 AM
Ooo, dramatic impressionist sky! Very cool.

04-30-2006, 06:58 PM
Euh.. Sweedie.. ahum...!!**!! A good friend of yours..?

Nice ..... The painting..

04-30-2006, 09:01 PM
You might have to re-post that picture, Sweedie.
It might have got lost during the rescue of the forum - sorry.

04-30-2006, 10:54 PM
Oh I saw the nude - I thought it was quite tasteful.
The red devil guy is very well done as well. It must be quite crowded in your head now. How do you keep them all out of trouble? ;)

05-01-2006, 06:58 PM
here's my try. nothing great, but it was fun to work in only one hue. in fact, i think i may find myself doing that alot. :D
great idea, and great work everyone (although, honestly, i've come to expect nothing but the most amazing stuff when you guys post pics!)

05-01-2006, 07:04 PM
Very cool picture, Hype. Nice lighting and visual perspective.
I've noticed in each of these picture on this thread that the single colour gives them each a distinct feel or mood.

05-01-2006, 09:54 PM
sweedie, love the character in your head with the goaty beard,

hype.......i like the mood and perspective..........

05-03-2006, 06:13 PM
sweedie- I love that the red image that you have up now followed a red nude. It adds such a devilish twist to the expression on his face upon considering them both.

hype- green... mmmmmm perhaps my favorite color (if forced to choose). I love that you painted light into dark and let the shadows reign.

05-06-2006, 11:25 AM
These are all fantastic, thank you all for sharing them! I look forward to seeing more submissions. =]

A lot of interesting paintings here. I thought I'd try my hand at it and here they are:

05-11-2006, 08:32 AM
Oh, those are lovely! I'm a bit partial to purple, so I really love oceanside. =]

Oo, I like Daybreak a lot.

05-11-2006, 11:09 AM
my eyes adjusted and i saw what was in 'daybreak'

i like that one, though, im partial to purple other times too

05-15-2006, 06:18 AM
First post here, I've been using art rage to get used to my new graphics tablet, so here's a silly cliche angel thing as I felt like having a go with this topic (as it's such a good idea.) I wanted to play with some very loose brushstrokes and textures, though my anatomy leaves quite a bit to be desired.

There's some LOVELY art in this thead. :)

05-15-2006, 08:17 AM

05-15-2006, 04:00 PM
Welcome to the forums, KT! I'd say that you're over the initial discomfort of using a graphics tablet; it looks like you're pretty comfortable with it to me. =] Thanks for sharing your work, and for adding to the exquisite artistry in this thread.

- Gita

05-15-2006, 06:06 PM
Welcome KT. I like the texture on the right side, that bubbley looking stuff. Is that paint tube or what is it? Cool image. I happen to like angel imagery quite well. Keep posting. :)

05-16-2006, 01:32 AM
JustG: It's not my first tablet, I've been using an uber cheap 30 a6 one for a few years, but I treated myself to an a5 Intuos 3 a few days ago to celebrate the end of my degree. :)

Fashimir: Yeah, it's the paint tube, dark colours on metalic mode with various sizes and preasures. Texture is fun :D

Thanks for the welcome, guys!

05-16-2006, 09:01 AM
Ooo, emoangel.jpg is cool. Very nice, KT.

05-16-2006, 08:44 PM
I've enjoyed looking at all of these. I've got to say that I'm drawn to hype's, had to keep going back for another look. I'd put that one on my wall in a heartbeat.

05-17-2006, 08:09 AM
 wow, thanx, cym! i'm honored...

i agree with Andy when he said that the color chosen seems to add a certain atmosphere to them. (well, he said something like that!)

also, looking back to the first page, i just noticed that ninja-usagi's picture has PERFECTLY STRAIGHT LINES, which is a topic that is raging over in another thread.

ninja-usagi, how did you do it? (i'm not trying to highjack the thread - maybe post an answer over in this thread http://www2.ambientdesign.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=500 )

09-09-2006, 06:52 AM
Here is my try of one hue painting or monochromatic painting.

I call this one for Fall :)

09-10-2006, 09:30 AM
All the work in here is very good :D

09-12-2006, 06:21 AM
I started this in ArtRage and got in big trouble. I've got a lot to learn to get paint to do what I want. I look at what everyone else does, it's amazing. So I know it's possible. Anyway, I had to bail out to PhotoImapct to fix mine.

Lovely idea.

Never been night fishing before. Looks ideal.

Love the way you handled the distant bushes on the lake (and the rest of course).

I thought this turned out really neat.

09-19-2006, 04:56 AM
That is neat, Katalan. Is this Old Man Winter?

Honestly, I saw it as a woman. I'm not really sure. *shrugs*

Wow! How did these slip by?

Rkngel -- really successful 'mind of it's own' sort of painting. It's really beautiful progression of color within the single color theme. I love the blend between the color movement and the painterliness. Juicy painting.

AgedP -- of the work I've seen of yours, this is one of, if not the most accomplished. All the things you have working in this -- with the atmosphere, the lost and found images, and the detailed sillhouettes. And I really like the color range as you use it. First rate!

Selby -- What joy. Has some interesting design stuff going on. I like the play of your lyrical lines in the distance at the top, against the long rolling broad geeen of the grass, along side the stippled tree blossoms that echoes below as well, and the verticals of the trunk and fan-shapes below the tree. Almost like words in a sentence.

09-30-2006, 07:37 PM
thanks DAkey :D

Nothing special here done pretty rapidly, dont have the patience for detail anymore with this mouse.. its pretty horrendous the mouse that is, trackball and all and i hope to get a wacom tablet soon. :)

Nice stuff VM..good warming colours

10-07-2006, 10:40 AM
Hi there, this is my first time posting in these forums although I am not new to ArtRage. I thought the one-hue thing sounded too fun to pass up. I picked a sepia/gold or something and it let me get reds and close to greens. If you are familiar with my work from GFX, then you will notice I didn't leave the brushstrokes this time. It is because you can only get the cool reds and yellow-greens with spreading the paint like crazy. I hope you like it.

Also, I have included the first step, and if you would like I could add 10 more steps along the way. It took me under an hour too. I saw that category as well.

10-07-2006, 10:59 AM
Hi Philoponia welcome to the forum. I like both versions of your one hue picture very much...and a great colour you chose to get such neat variations

10-08-2006, 09:35 AM
This is the first time try at a project - I am impressed with what I see - good stuff

10-08-2006, 10:05 AM
Hi Jack-nice work....especially love the little fishy you have leaping out of the wave

10-09-2006, 05:04 AM
Saw this topic yesterday. Sounded like a fun idea. Today I decided to paint something of my own.

It's the first space ship I've tried to paint and I think it ended up looking quite decent, even though my artistic skills are not that great.

10-09-2006, 05:24 AM
great pics in here....

your right it looks quite good...even the perspective and the shadow seems to be correct! if you ad more details it would be amazing...

10-17-2006, 01:55 PM
This is a 10 minute blue hue painting. I intended for it to be hard to see, that wasn't just from the hue. It is actually a remake of another one that I did, only this took 10 minutes, one hue, and I actually may like it more.

10-18-2006, 11:26 AM
almost feel like im looking at the scene through a big fishtank :)

Great stuff here, missed it, glad it got revived, had to do one,,thank you!!!

03-25-2007, 11:05 PM
Neat idea...sticking in one hue. I probably could have varied saturation a little more, but well... moody stuff comes out like that by default! :)

About an hour.

03-26-2007, 03:40 AM
Dear Taron, What a great one-hue you did!!! got up this morning and it was very foggy, but regular grey and white fog, green fog is very mysterious for sure!!!

03-26-2007, 06:12 AM
Lee, I love your painting. :D
Taron.....that is amazing wonderful..... :D

03-26-2007, 06:54 AM
Thank You Bumble!!!

03-26-2007, 10:30 AM
There are a number of really amazing pieces in here and some surprises, too. This thread is great!

BUMBLE, WHERE IS YOUR PICTURE!?!? C'mon, I want one from you!!! (am I skipping over an existing one right now?! I've looked through the whole thread, can't find it?!?) Hahaha. Thanx, Bumble! Means a lot to hear compliments from you.

Lee, thanx, I like your Lizzard a lot, too, by the way, very decorative and a neat use of the glitter! I would say, from a first longer observation speaking, this looks like the happiest - recently deceased lizzard ever! The picture has a strange friendly calm about it that is somehow soothing.

Sweedie, I dig your style a lot, you're a master with a sense of ease in his absurd carricatures. I was wondering how your wife felt after having been carricatured, because the closer women come to men, the easier men can traumatize them! It might have helped that she looked really sweet even as such. Ohm, wrong thread, I know... but while i was at it... the devil's FRATZ here is solid greatness riding in on a feather! 8)

Peter Pinckney's Alien Cityscape is a shocker. It's fantastic as a piece of art. Naive, but so powerful and solid. He shows a lot more successful stylizations in the thread then I realized by looking at his gallery pieces. Even Woodstock monochrome has a sense of genius to it, i think. The crowd feels like a crowd, Jimmi seems like he's a knight awaiting the evil hords storming towards him or so, haha. It's great. But Alien cityscape is genius.

Aged P always does great stuff, but the Constructed Dawn is a fluke masterpiece, I think. The dear somewhat annoys me, because it drops out of style a little, but other than that... and I'm not even that much into abstraction, this is gorgeous and masterfully stylized. It makes you feel the brightness, smell the greens, hear the forest rassling, some hisses, some rattles and damp distant noises. An image that is very alive.

Talking about abstract art. RKangle (ark angel?) provided a truely masterful image with "ripple". You shouldn't scroll by, but bring it onto the screen and look at it. It's deep, saturated and full with a great sense of oil. It looks like a fresh painting. This image somehow pulls me into the "Now" more than most. Feels like we're in the same room, somehow. I don't know how else to describe it. Great stuff.

But well, I don't wonna over-play "art critic" right now and so soon. I don't know all of you well enough yet, or even at all. Of course, one may argue that that's the best moment to give honest critics, but it's important to me to know when and how it can be contructive and to whom.

More than anything I'm very grateful for your sweet reactions, makes me very, very happy! :D

03-26-2007, 11:22 AM
Dear Taron, Thank You Very Much!!! was a fun piece to do,idea for it came out of the color,,,,Regarding Sweedies painting of his wife, wasn't that the greatest???!!! bet she is his best friend too,,, ps. i always check out and appreciate the 'critique' as much as i can, especially here as there is such a difference in everyones works and it is a joy to be able to see it all,,,,

05-02-2007, 08:53 AM
African full moon...brings back sweet (rather sad now) memories.

Edit: added some details.

08-24-2007, 06:54 PM
wow  SW thats amazing :D ...very evocative linework...a transportative(strange word i know) image...i feel i am there under the moon watching the river

...you can see it in my gallery too....

my first artrage experiment, second ever painting. First was done 10 years ago on canvas, if I remember correctly it was also "monochrome", blue. I'm still lost like a baby, but very, very glad to have the possibility to paint in digital.

AR and this site is huge inspiration, thanks everybody.

Fantastic. :D :D :D

10-03-2007, 11:23 AM
Hi Jon,

Welcome to the forum. :) I think you really have talent if you haven't painted/drawn for so long. This is amazing painting you have for the first one. Hope to see more of your works.

10-04-2007, 05:38 AM
Thanks for the kind words :-D

it feels so good be drawing and painting again, even with the little added sting coming from the wasted years not really touching a pen.

I figured a wacom would be a fast and cost-effective way of getting back into art, and landed on Artrage mainly because of the many beautiful paintings I saw here, but also because of it's simplicity.

11-09-2007, 12:14 AM
here is another one ....... :D
can say the girl looks like me without specs ....n of course just after bath ,,......without combing hair
