View Full Version : Oil paintings

i started using ArtRage about a month ago :D and these are two of my first paintings- done in oil. I just love painting in oil. The second one was rather quick, sorry about the rough texture.
So, I'd love to see everyone's oil paintings too (:

You are really good at it, i really like the first one :). I only have 2 oil paintings ... i use the pencil and airbrush tools more often :p

Thank you Semd!

Those are lovely Jasper. I'd love to see your airbrush paintings (because i literally still suck at those) D;

Here's another oil painting I've done for a friend. :P Oil, pencil, palette knife, and smudge/blur setting of the palette knife...

Another good painting...I really like what you did with the red hair :)

Great paintings Sophiya!

06-05-2011, 12:42 PM
Thank you (:
The hair actually took me agesss to do. X) I'm quite happy with it now though.

They are fantastic, and the effects so unique-you are quite welcome Sophiya.

Nice works in this thread.... Love 'm all!!!!:):):):)

06-09-2011, 04:43 AM
I agree with last ones posts...
Beautiful gallery of works...!

06-09-2011, 06:40 AM
I gave the oil brush another try ... i call the painting 5 more minutes.
The oil brush is so different to use than the airbrush, i find it difficult to work with :(.

06-09-2011, 08:11 AM
great oil paintings Sophiya and all.

06-09-2011, 11:00 AM
Thank you for all those lovely comments. (:

Jasper: It's true, working with oil is probably the most contrary you can get to the airbrush. Have you tried blending the colors with the knife and then changing the knife's settings to Blur? Usually works better that way for me :P

06-10-2011, 05:48 AM
Sophiya: In artrage 2.6 you can't change the knife to blur. I use the "soft" knife to blend, but this blend slows my computer down, alot :p.
I will keep practicing though :p

Here's one I did a long time ago in oils with AR 2.

Sir Francis Drake's boat the Golden Hind.

06-10-2011, 07:52 AM
That's very nice. Can you upload a closer look at the ship? I'm just curious how much detail you added. How big was the painting? I bet this one would look fabulous printed.

Now that I have 10 posts I can finally post these images here. Working with oils, this was my first project in AR3. It's a memorable moment from me and my wife's last trip to Brazil. It was our honeymoon. I painted this after we returned for her birthday. The second is an image of the detail at the rocks. I have some other detail shots in my gallery.

Sparky did you try clicking on the picture.

I like your wave pictures they look very graphic.

Thanks gzairborne. I realized that I didn't need to post the link after I posted the post. I thought I was just setting up the images for display, not an image with a link. Oh well.

Thanks for the compliment, the oil brush does a nice hard edge, and I tried to work on many layers so that it wouldn't smudge. I was hoping for an effect of many drying sessions to lay on different colors. I think it worked out well.

Jasper: woops. i keep forgetting such things. You'll have to forgive me XD

Peter: That is so pretty. I cant stop staring at it. Great work :D

Sparkybrown: You have a unique style. I really like the technique. <:

Thanks Sophiya. I appreciate that. Its like what Van Gogh said when he met The Doctor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_and_the_Doctor) recently; "I'm really not very good, but I do my best."

Not that I would ever think of comparing my simple works to his masterpieces, but I think its true of every humble individual.

I did another one, here it is in my gallery. This one I did on the iPad. I'd like to hear any critiques you have on it at this forum thread (http://www2.ambientdesign.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35419).

Oh my Gosh! I missed Peter's "Sir Francis Drake's boat the Golden Hind"! :)

Since the Gallery is actually down, I browse more through the posts. It turned out very worthwhile task... There are many other good paintings as well.

beautiful paintings, oils .

07-13-2011, 09:55 AM
@Sophyia Really love the works you've posted. The way you have rendered hair in all of them is wonderful.. a real strength in each piece. I especially love the first one, mainly because i love seeing brushstrokes in works.:)
I'm surprised to see how much the smudge and blur settings on the knife can make oils appear to be airbrush like.
The last piece could be artwork for the Final Fantasy games... really love the lost edge on the face and the mouth and hair are superb.:)

@Jasper.. fabulous concept.:) I imagine that after being spoilt with a tablet that's what it'd feel like for me working on a mouse again ;)

@Peter... Gorgeous, the detail in the boat is amazing, really love the impasto texture of the water too, gives it real movement :)

@SparkyBrown... Adore the fresh modern feel of your work and can't wait until the gallery is back up so that I can view larger samples.:)

I've not played around with the oils as much as I'd like to as of yet but here's one I did last year.

Wow, looks like i really let this thread die down too much. >.< Sorry, wasnt around lately, I had alot of finals coming up and i was kinda stressed. I love all the paintings in here, still! I havent had alot of time to make more oil paintings but i've been kinda spending abit of time here and there with airbrushing. Maybe i'll open up another thread and display them there. Anyways keep posting! I always enjoy oils. They're by far my favorite. <:
