05-04-2011, 10:09 AM
Hi, I think the artrage app is fantastic, and just wanted to share some of my sketches. And feel free to post your own sketches in this thread:)

Brilliant stuff. Do you use a stylus? I just got the Nomad Brush. Gets my finger out of the way and provides detail and accuracy.

05-04-2011, 10:52 AM
WOW, just wow!!! :) great skills, great sketches! thanks for sharing :)

05-04-2011, 10:55 AM
Cool work!!!

05-04-2011, 02:34 PM
great sketches... love the colors and ink line work interplay... interesting characters that are not overly stylized but love the loose quality and warm and cool tones....:cool::cool::cool::cool::D

05-04-2011, 07:50 PM
great portrait pieces. love your brush work.

05-04-2011, 07:58 PM

Cool sketches! Especially considering the iPad technology

05-04-2011, 08:50 PM
You got really excellent and professional artpieces with these sketches! Welcome in here and thanks for sharing!

05-04-2011, 09:17 PM
Wow, thank you all for your kind words. :):)

To answer some questions: I donīt use a stylus. I think the way I work with my fingers on the ipad is better for my style. When using a wacom tablet at work my drawings seems a bit uptight and overdone. ..if you know what I mean :)

My favorite tool is the ink pen and paint roller, and considering the iPad technology, at first I thougt I`d miss the pressure sensitivity. But with the way the colors blends in artrage I don`t miss it at all

and again, thank you and pardon my bad english.

05-04-2011, 11:39 PM
Wow! Impressive!!:):):):):)

05-04-2011, 11:43 PM
Great work, well done:)

05-06-2011, 02:25 AM
here is some more sketches. They are mostly done at the subway on my wy to work. Sometimes I only do the linework, and then on my way home I do the coloring. :)

05-07-2011, 03:27 AM
Here is another one from my ipad. And feedback, both negative and positive as long as anyone can learn from it, is wellcome.

And have a nice weekend

05-07-2011, 03:37 AM
Thank You for this additional gallery You shared! I understand what You say about keeping fresh and spontaneous in drawing and painting ... I often have problems of overworing an initial idea with adverse effects.

05-07-2011, 05:48 AM
I find myself in "a overworing" situation many times a day. And some how its a bit funny (or sad) because it only takes an extra stroke or two with whatever I am painting with to fix the problem. But instead, I go for a cup of coffe or even quit working with it till the next day. So thank you Artrage, and thank you iPad, and thank you 15 minutes on the subway every day. :):)

05-07-2011, 06:19 AM
fornes - very impressive work:eek::eek:.... I know from experience that to achieve such compelling portraits with such an economy of line and color is very difficult. but your working shows such confident and imaginative brush and line work... I love these.. every one.....:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

05-07-2011, 07:42 AM
thats very kind of you to say gxhpainter :) But I think the portraits travels economyclass as well. Because sometimes they do not really look very much like the "victims" I am drawing :):)

05-07-2011, 02:50 PM
All very impressive!! You do good work.

05-07-2011, 09:43 PM
Once again very impressive work:)

05-10-2011, 07:36 AM
another one from my iPad. The linework is done just a few minutes before the previous portrait, but the coloring is done just from my poor memory. And you can probably see that the strokes are not so impulsive in this sketch.:D

05-10-2011, 07:54 AM
fornes - another great sketch... do you add the pencil/ink line work on a new layer about the color sketch or directly on the sketch after the color work is mostly done to add emphasis and delineate the figure..?? love you work..:cool::cool::cool::D

05-10-2011, 08:18 AM
gxhpainter - Yes, first I do the ink line, and then the color work on a layer below. After I got the iPad, I do a lot of "blind sketches" Is it called blind sketching/drawing when you only look at what you are drawing and not at the paper/iPad? Thats what we call it here. I dont`t do the entire drawing that way, but quite a lot of it (important with some control points). It turns out quite well very often.

05-11-2011, 08:11 PM
another one. Artrage, iPad. Interesting face on this one, but its a bit awkward to sit and stare at someone on the subway :)

05-11-2011, 08:50 PM
What a sketching machine! Thak you for Your explanation on Your process and congratulations again for Your amazingly good outcomes!

05-23-2011, 01:25 AM
thank you Caesar :))) ...but sketching machine? I don`t think so :o I have been staring at this one for a week or so without beeing able to work on it. So now I give up and post it here just to get it out of my system.

About the portrait: Its supposed to be a woman with a zebra striped shirt an a hint of a small cleavage. She was beautifull in a strange way, but she did not look like a young man. ... like I painted her. (so to the lady at the subway, I am very sorry you turned out like this)

05-23-2011, 06:46 AM
fornes... two more really nice works... I really like the way you handle the roller tool and what I sense is airbrush and of course the ink line... and a very creative color palate :cool::cool::D

05-23-2011, 11:48 PM
Obviously no offense was intented withsketch-machine, rather admiration and a vague hint to some song talking of sex-machine ... :D
Also this last one is sheer beauty, as a painting, notwithstanding the quite important nose of the subject! :p

05-24-2011, 04:21 AM
No offense taken Caesar :) And the nose ... my mind goes to my old Asterix comics :D

05-24-2011, 07:31 PM
LOL:D You mean this is Cleopatra's nose ;) ... or the famous Gallic one?:p

05-27-2011, 04:55 AM
Yes I was thinking of Cleopatra's nose :D

Here is another one.

gxhpainter: You are right about the airbrush. I mostly use it in multiply mode to darken the existing colors. But I also use it to get the basick colors and shadows right before i paint the details with the roller. Like in the Ikaros jr painting.

05-30-2011, 02:49 AM
These all are just amazing sketches, your ability to catch the essence of people in a short time is stunning....I love the unfinished look of a good sketch, though it is so hard to capture..your color tones in the faces are something to aspire to. Really nice work.

05-30-2011, 02:58 AM
Wow, I agree, outstanding art.

05-30-2011, 03:36 AM
fornes - it amazes me how you can have a loose quality to the colors and brushwork yet every stroke adds to the character of the face and lends authenticity.... I have tried many times but just an errant stroke or two and my figures seem to be suffering from some tragic medical condition!:D:D.... this latest portrait is great I love the hair...:cool::cool::cool:

05-30-2011, 03:39 AM
Your paintings are great and your english is fine :D

05-30-2011, 07:32 AM
You really have a fantastic style:):)

05-30-2011, 09:04 AM
Wow!! Thank you :o:D

gxhpainter: the hair is actually a bit inspired by your paintings and use of a masked area/form, and then filled with different colors and strokes.

justjean: thank you!!!!! :D

Rob, mannafig, Alexandra: Thank you too!!!!!:D

Here is another one. I focused more on the line this time. Might have something to do with a comic expo here in Oslo this weekend. And I think the picture tells a vague story about the man I sketched. ...but I want to keep the story open. If you know what I mean.

05-30-2011, 10:05 AM
They are just amazing !

06-18-2011, 10:12 AM
It`s been a while since last scetch, but summer is comming in Norway too, sooo ...
Anyway, here is another one. Have a nice summer everyone!!!!

06-18-2011, 10:50 AM
Fantastic, I love your style, it's so loose and whimsical while still capturing a great deal of naturalism. I especially love the first piece and the woman in the glasses (is she in a space scene? It sort of looks like it - would make a great book cover).

06-24-2011, 09:40 PM
Thank you HarlequiNQB, but the woman in the glasses (actually she is a he :D ) is not in space. I just tried to put in some background. But I like the idea of a space scene.:)

there are some space related pictures on my poorly updated blog. But it is written in Norwegian.

06-25-2011, 04:15 AM
Super work:):)

07-07-2011, 07:50 AM
just a couple of pen sketches before my vacation to the midnight sun. Have a nice summer everyone :):):)

07-07-2011, 06:50 PM
You're so good spostting the few lines around which You make the strokes dance to get such lively portraits!

07-08-2011, 02:36 AM
absolutely fabulous work. Love your style, sense of color and composition, they all work. ^Up^

08-19-2011, 01:33 AM
It`s been a quiet summer sketchwise, but at last things seems to get back to normal here in Oslo, meaning, they are falling asleep on the subway again.

I tried a recording of this one, and played it in higher resolutin on my computer. Works great, but there are a few bugs resulting in a few extra strokes.

09-17-2011, 12:14 PM
a couple more

09-24-2011, 02:26 AM
here is another one. Bit more of a caricature with the big ear. I tried to run the script on this one, and enlarging it to enormous proportions. Works really great. Sadly the script does not record "undo" or layer modes/transparancy so you will have to keep that in mind while painting.

09-24-2011, 02:29 AM
And while I`at it, ..another one of my colleague

Have a nice weekend

D Akey
09-24-2011, 07:20 AM
How on earth did I miss this thread?!?!?!?!

Fantastic work!!!! BRAVO!!!!!!!!

More please. . .

09-24-2011, 11:47 AM
I agree, really inspiring work. Congratulations.

09-24-2011, 12:18 PM
Fantastic stuff, I agree too, not a wasted stroke anywhere

09-24-2011, 09:13 PM
iceaxe, Lima, D Akey: Thank you very much :) I`ll keep posting :)

09-25-2011, 03:00 AM
Fornes.... I was just thinking about you the other day wondered what happened .. i am a super fan of your works and was missing seeing anything... so I am very happy you have popped back in with a few more tasty treats...;);):D:D.

09-26-2011, 09:52 PM
Big claps to Your outstanding talent and style!

09-26-2011, 11:32 PM
All are so brilliantly painted and you are so talented. Thanks for sharing Fornes:)

09-28-2011, 05:51 AM
blushing here :) Thank you!! Here is one from today, a bit desaturated i think.
Colors looked better on the iPad... ;)

10-13-2011, 09:22 AM
another one from my iPad

10-13-2011, 09:54 AM
The emotions are all there....

Just brilliant the few moments of a pose that looks like being hours painting and doing everything "realistic"

10-13-2011, 12:13 PM
LOVE your style!!!

10-13-2011, 05:51 PM
wonderful portraits. how much you capture and convey. they are all amazing.

10-13-2011, 07:59 PM
I'm a believer, well done

10-13-2011, 08:34 PM
Ink pen and watery colors. A really great pair in the hands of a master like You!

10-13-2011, 09:32 PM
Thank you all for the kind words :):):)
Kaiko: I have to comment. The inkline is captured there and then, and quite fast. Maybe 5 - 10 min. Sometimes I have time to put down some colors just to get the direction of light and shadow right. But very often I just try to remember some of the colors and lighting, and then I will use an hour or two to finish the sketch .... so I guess I am cheating a bit ;)

10-13-2011, 11:36 PM
Love these, inspiring

10-14-2011, 12:06 AM
nice work -just getting my head around the ipad.
bought a bamboo stylus for ipad and it seems ok.

10-14-2011, 09:54 AM
Fornes, that was a fantastic replay from you! You saved me a lot of thinking about the way you were painting...:D

and to be honest with you, I have been doing the exact way that you are doing with your art...... but didn't know that, till now

An inspiration

(so, we are both cheating jeje...)

10-14-2011, 10:34 AM
Very nice ;)
Like it :)

10-14-2011, 10:55 AM
Some very fine work, really like your style. More please. :)

10-21-2011, 10:16 AM
this one, ... I like it and I don`t but I do ;)

10-21-2011, 12:12 PM
Love LOVE this style.....enjoy looking very much

10-21-2011, 09:12 PM
I don't want to say that art is an excellent advertising mean, but I didn't buy my iPad until I saw this thread  Apple really need to pay you for that...

Now, there is still a small problem left: how to get something of comparable quality to yours? ...Well, I guess, it's rather not the matter of any technical thing. Thank you for the great inspiration, which your images so generously spread...:)

10-22-2011, 02:04 AM
Wow, thank you Strandy and Margi. It really means a lot to me if you find so much inspiration in my sketches. :):) What is Apples phone number? ;)

10-22-2011, 03:18 AM
Another fine one

D Akey
10-23-2011, 07:33 AM
Such a distinctive way of really getting the essence of the sitters -- a little caricature, a whole lot of personality and a brilliant technique. Always a joy to look at your stuff no matter how often I check this thread. :):):):):)

10-23-2011, 08:00 AM
Terrific thread. Inspired.

10-23-2011, 12:44 PM
Hi Fornes thanks for the showing and the help, my 1st venture into

layer's I would like to try on the bus, but think its to bumpy,so will stick to

the Sketch pad , might copy them in your style but I haven't got your

fluid colour sense thanks again for the enjoyment you've given me

10-24-2011, 02:50 AM
bumpy or not, you got the "not talking" expression right on. :D:D

11-18-2011, 11:54 AM
I am new to artrage and to painting. I have used just about everything Mac for years, and so I am trying these new adventure on my iPad, using a Bamboo Wacom stylus. I stumbled on your thread and find you work amazing. They are so simple and you bring each individual to life. I have never ridden the subway, but I can so picture it! Love you work! Thanks to you and all other ragers for sharing!

11-18-2011, 08:02 PM
Hiya eighty, how have you been? I've been busy lately and missed all your latest stuff. But I see that you're still bashing and vrooming. Keep on keeping on! :D

11-19-2011, 12:28 AM
I love these sketches. Really good stuff mate. :)

05-03-2012, 08:56 PM
missed so many of the additions. thanks to Gary for pointing the way back here. fantastic quick portraits and color sketches!!! inspiring.

05-09-2012, 09:06 AM
It`s been too long, but here it is ... a new one

05-09-2012, 07:13 PM
Everytime You post it's a feast for my eyes! Bravo!

05-09-2012, 09:13 PM
Few colors, clear lines and iPad in master's hand.
That's what I once called "Concerto for iPad". http://www2.ambientdesign.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.png

05-10-2012, 02:51 AM
Hi Fornes,

Thanks for some great lessons how you see your world it is a great view thanks.

05-20-2012, 09:37 PM
super. like the use of color and the quick sketch that captures so much.

05-20-2012, 11:20 PM
Excellent work Fornes and its alway a pleasure to view your work:)

05-21-2012, 10:15 AM
Thank you all for your fantastic feedback, I really appreciate it :)
Here is another one that really didn`t turn out the way I had in mind, but I like it.

05-23-2012, 02:09 PM
this last one has a great graphic novel look to it. especially the viewing angle and zoom.

05-24-2012, 05:05 AM
here is another one. Not quite happy with the colors and direction of the light ... but i guess I can do another one :)
Thank you screenpainter :)

05-26-2012, 11:08 AM
and another one.

05-26-2012, 06:11 PM
Love those sketches! Great blending.

05-26-2012, 06:21 PM
You capture so much of their character and personality with these sketches. It is amazing how you can get so much in the limited amount of time. I really like the graphic novel look of your style.

05-26-2012, 06:50 PM
Like your style

06-03-2012, 05:02 AM
Thank you Weeks, screenpainter and juliawilliams. Here is one with cleaner colors and lines

06-04-2012, 07:59 PM
Very nice additions as usual, dear mate. The last one shows a style departure towards a comics style which is very interesting too.

06-12-2012, 06:43 PM
bit of a style change on the last one... different sketching style. all very cool. find it hard to keep up everywhere with the viewing.
hope no one takes that as a sign of ambivalence. these are all great.

12-21-2012, 03:11 AM
It`s been a very busy fall, and my focus has been on my kids and work related projects. But at last I have some new sketches from the subway on my way to work. Have merry xmas everyone :)

12-21-2012, 03:30 AM
and another one who looks a bit like one of santas helpers :) But he is real. I found myself staring and thinking about the colors on his glasses a long time before thinking that I should draw him

12-21-2012, 04:52 AM
fornes, these are great, I just got an ipad and am practising on it with finger, but I think I will get a pen for it, have not uploaded from any yet but will soon I hope lol

12-21-2012, 05:29 AM
Fornes, you are with out doubt my favorite artist on this forum and there are many outstanding artists here. but your clean yet brilliantly colored and drawn portraits amaze!.... I am so happy to see your new posts.. they have a slightly different quality than your earlier works.. the colors are bolder and more confident and add great illustrative quality to the work..:cool::cool:

12-21-2012, 06:37 AM
I'm totally enamoured with the way you render skintones. It's spectacular and almost reminiscent of the Old Masters' styles.

D Akey
12-21-2012, 07:24 AM
Wonderful portraits. Very inventive. :):):)

12-21-2012, 07:29 AM
Good to see yuh Back :D :D :D SLAINTE

12-21-2012, 10:06 AM
Every one of these portraits has given me pleasure. Thank you for sharing them with us.

12-21-2012, 01:13 PM
Great sketchs!!!
A question:
Can I discharge ARage in a Tablet that is not an Apple IPAD???

12-21-2012, 10:25 PM
Plenty of excellent additions. Bravissimo!

01-14-2013, 09:01 AM
My best wishes for you all in the new year 2013! Here is one from Line 3, Mortensrud, (the name of my subway, tube, metro) in Oslo, Norway. Oslo is nicknamed the Tigertown, and that goes well with the yellow ... things you can hold on to when taking the T-bane (norwegian for Tube, subway etc)

Thank you for all the comments, and here is the painting :)

02-10-2013, 12:33 PM
here is something quite different than my usual portraits. The Kid is a bit big i think, and the rocket launch site, barely visible, could be bigger. .... :)

02-10-2013, 01:49 PM
Love them all! L

D Akey
02-10-2013, 04:49 PM
Well, I think for the story staging within that large a frame you want the kid large like this even though the fence posts are so thin. It doesn't bother me though. As to the rocket, you could make that bigger indeed. But the easiest way to show it off more would be to strategically snap a couple of the wires and even knock over one of the outer posts so it presents an unobstructed opening where we can see the rocket where it now stands. The fence could be more in disrepair to make this work.

Charming warm tones. Feels like certain animations like the movie Iron Giant.

It's gorgeous and I am intrigued with the story that is going on in my mind from looking at this. Love your paint strokes. Well done.

02-10-2013, 09:46 PM
I'm also one who still believes in Artistic license. That's known as licentia poetica in poetry is used to denote the distortion of fact, alteration of the conventions made by an artist to improve a piece of art. Why not let the air perspective you show in your "rocket view" work for you this way? My impression is that what we see is more about how this boy sees the start of rocket than how we see the scene. Distorted dimensions from foreground to the back ground (Big boy and small rocket) move the the focus point greatly to the boy. In fact this painting shows two starts to me. Start in cosmos and start in life.

02-10-2013, 11:32 PM
Thank you both Strandy and D Akey. I painted this as an example to use in an eveningclass for gamedesigner students, and your comments are very helpful. And Lindae: Love you too ;)

03-07-2013, 04:33 AM
here is another one. I upgraded my iPad, so now I can take reference photos on scene. I think this is a messy an overdone painting, but I like the colors and some of the areas are ok. The thumbnail looked very nice when I uploaded the painting :o

03-07-2013, 03:51 PM
Your sketches to me are all beautiful paintings. I may need years to get to that. Very inspiring to look at your sketches. Do you use some kind of pen on ipad or just fingers?

03-07-2013, 06:14 PM
What a fantastically incredible thread. How on earth have I missed it. Beautiful and inventive work. :)

03-15-2013, 05:37 AM
another one from my iPad. Loosely based on an observation of the early morning sun hitting the frozen trees and snow. I think I like the light and colors, but not sure about the strokes. .. feels like too much of something

03-15-2013, 06:34 AM
What a fabulous artist you are. I have really enjoyed your thread.

03-15-2013, 09:23 AM
woot, this brightful scenery brings the spring feeling with your colorful paints on it. Do you use some kind of pen on the ipad or just using fingers to paint? Beautiful piece of painting :)

03-15-2013, 08:15 PM
Thank you Alexandra, Iīm glad you enjoy it :)
pai, sorry, I forgot to answer your question in your last post, I just use my fingers. And yes, I call them sketches .. even if I consider some of them finished paintings. I guess it is because I make them on the iPad, and mostly on my way to work .... so, Sketches will do just fine :)

03-15-2013, 09:10 PM
Either thin or thick, You paint wonderfully anyway!

03-15-2013, 11:34 PM
Love these paintings....

03-16-2013, 12:56 AM
As always a delight to view this thread. Love your latest snow scenes.:)

03-16-2013, 01:05 AM
nice work..:o

03-17-2013, 09:50 AM
Not too many portraits lately, so here is one. Have a nice weekend everyone

03-17-2013, 09:57 AM
Wonderful! I love your style. :D :D

03-17-2013, 11:57 AM
Looks like he is falling asleep. Smiles. Great sketches :)

04-16-2013, 07:08 AM
Here is another Sketch I did on the 39th World Wide SketchCrawl. It was a great day but a bit cold for those of us who forgot to dress properly ;)

04-16-2013, 07:47 AM
All are great and I love those snow scenes :)

04-16-2013, 09:36 AM
Wow, these are fantastic!

04-16-2013, 08:24 PM
More wonderful additions! A pity You had little time recently.:(

04-16-2013, 10:56 PM
Very nice...love the kid watching the rocket launching...:cool::cool::cool:

06-28-2013, 06:16 AM
And again It is a long time since the last AR portrait. But I have been busy drawing the old fashion way, with pen and paper ... Have a Nice summer everyone!!

08-02-2013, 06:53 AM
Finaly a sketch done partially on my iPad using artrage. I took a Photo of my sketchbook with my iPad, and did the linework and watercolor in artrage.

08-02-2013, 07:54 AM
Damn nice....how is the performance on the iPad?

08-02-2013, 10:20 AM
Thank you kenmo, compared to the speed of procreate that i have been using lately, it is very slow. But it depends on the tool. I still think artrage is one of the best apps. Usually, i am using the paint roller wich blends the colors very nice. So i have never really missed the preassure sensitivity. And the script recorder is awsome. I have the newest iPad now, and it is much better than the first one. I guess this means that the performance is ok, and I think it is an essential tool for any digital artist :)

08-02-2013, 08:09 PM
What a wonderful novelty this last unfinished sketch with the boat! I love it very much!

08-03-2013, 01:49 PM
I have to echo with Caesar, love your last sketch, the boat, very much.

08-03-2013, 08:56 PM
Thank you, Caesar and Pai! :D

08-04-2013, 12:02 AM
I just love your portrait style, and the boat is excellent also!
