Yes, Lee, they did. . . in the book. And since it would be a spoiler I won't say here. I actually loved the book as well. But the movie was, for me, one of those mile markers in the stages of my growing up. Must have seen it umteen times just for this sequence. In the 60s it was something else, like shattering the confines of the life I had been leading as a child. . . each time. That's what it was for me, anyway.

But I must confess, I did have to go out and buy the book just to find out what Arthur C Clarke had in mind.

Anyway, my dear Pinckney, well done. . . Again I find you launching me into space and time.

Peter,

a bright shining universe indeed.

Lee,

from Wikipedia:

an ancient and unseen alien race uses a mechanism with the appearance of a large crystalline monolith to investigate worlds all across the galaxy and, if possible, to encourage the development of intelligent life.

Dear GZ, Thank You!!! never thought of looking it up in Wiki, saw the second movie where the thing fractaled itself,,,made me wonder about it more,,, will have read the book anyway;):) xox

ps, now you made me recall an old sci-fi movie called 'Monolith Monsters', if i recall, similar 'things' reproduced themselves on Earth causing a real mess,, hmm, wonder if that idea was used in "2001",,,,:)

Amazing! And that whole series of books is one of my favorites. You have captured the essence of the monolith very well! Gorgeous nebula too, very masterfully done. :)
