Still looking great as far as the drawings go. The studio stuff takes on a little bit of the ol' German Expressionism. Very cool stuff. Stylizations of different kinds tend to group one into the existing tone that is evoked previously. So looking like Lautrec would make me think of a cavalier theatricality. Looking similar to Scheele, as with your latest nude sketches, makes me think of edginess and introspection brought on by lean times. So when painting in an existing style it's like painting with more than paint. Ain't always so. But it's a cool thing.

And then of course comes the time when one's body of work becomes large enough, it takes on that voice.

I have no trouble seeing anymore this range as part of your style (for as long as you do it this way). But I am also starting to experience it as your voice with that quality that is your own, not unlike being able to recognize the sound of your voice. All kinda goes together.

And within that voice, you are getting more and more polished, while maintaining your look. Very cool.

And as to the color stuff -- the roof tiles. . . nice and patient. Paid off all that you put into it. Each tile becomes like a piano key on a grand keyboard.

And as to the horse, what can I say but "Hello Dali'". . . :D

Nice work, 78-

Showing more and more artistic command all the time.

As to the color rooftops, looks great. Wish some of our buildings looked so lively around here for real.

Edit (included this pic):

Oh, and there's one drawing that I find very intriguing. . . didn't know how to describe it so I grabbed it and included it in this post.

What's the story on this one?

I seem to recall that Gustav Klimpt also created an interesting image in response to his critics, basically having a gorgeous lady mooning them from within the frame in one of his most famous paintings.

http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isc...29l3.10.1l14l0 (http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&hl=en&source=hp&biw=800&bih=272&q=klimpt+goldfish&gbv=2&oq=klimpt+goldfish&aq=f&aqi=g-s1g-ms1&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=2393l5351l0l5714l15l14l0l0l0l0l201l1929l3.1 0.1l14l0)

Your latest painting seems to be an only slightly more respectful comment to the powers that be that sort of shows how fully you merit the 55 years to which you are now aged, as observed by the good Dr. Lima. I'll give a second opinion. . . you rock, my dear fellow. Careful though, as you may soon loose your senior discount.

Well done sirs!

Nice work. What's "The Masters Collection" that you put below some of the pics?

I particularly like the lady with that on her just above. So the smashes work best? I can guess which ones they are and would guess that is because you are going for a broad impression that lets you get the essence of the likenesses. It's freer. But not to discount the value of a careful drawing. They're different takes. But I like them all. Well done, lad. These last couple rounds are great. :):):)

May I be the first to say "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

I was just musing the other day that the normally bored-as-all-get-out bus riders must really treasure you and your sketching. Wonder if this is how the artist Ryder got his reputation. . .

The way I see it is that there is an art to interacting with people as well, and you, my artful dodger, are in the pocket. . . er. . . let me rephrase that. . . you are in the zone. . . they missed ya.

So that one a sketch of some of the drunken sailors from the ship on shore leave getting taken in by some amoeba pretending to be an egg? Or is that a metaphorical picture above of all thems wots scramblin' to get a seat on the bus? Anyway, it's right brilliant, lad.

Looks like Kilroy's still here. . . Just so long as it ain't the pillory, I think we're in good shape. :D

Oh yeah, the drawings are rockin!

First of all Eighty+ congrats for the improvent clearly visible from post #1 to post #21342523454. This means that I have chance myself to learn if I practice 80+ years :)

The potrait are getting better and better from the emotional point of you as if you are more watching the scene instead of caring only to sketching it.

I don't know if you're aware but I'm really attracted by this Wacom "toy". (http://www.wacom.com/en/Products/Inkling.aspx)

hi hello Monza its all in your own hand's  you must take a sketchbook
with you at all time's not to keep your pocket warm :D but to sketch bit hard
at first but soon get used to it:cool: as for the Wacom what you can afford
mine was a small bamboo pen and touch was over the moon with it as got artrage as part of the package i have upgraded but don't no why think it the old story like golf of fishing or frog with his moter cars if you look in the forums for
John Singer Sargeant you will see that I've copied the three master's drawing
i think that and the bus sketch'es helped me to improve ok good luck bash on

Hi Katie Katie Coops you didn't say  what you thought of my

08-31-2011, 05:04 AM
Sketchy Ploos, I think you have stones, my man. Especially for a public sketch artist, one's gotta have them. (Was that the question?) :D

Nice drawings! Go man Go!!!!!

--------------------------------

About the new Wacom thing. I wonder if it essentially does what scanning a drawing and putting it into Illustrator and convert it to vector, or if there's a new wrinkle. More compact than a scanner if you are on location or in the field, with a laptop if you needed something immediately.

Also I wonder if it deals with half tones any differently. Vector and sketchbooks seem like they would overlap only a little unless you were a designer.

I'm not a vector kind of guy. So it would be moot for me. But I might be missing some features in my initial look at it.

hi a quickie this morning ok

D Akey
09-07-2011, 10:34 PM
Wow and double Wow. . . or Wow Wow! :D

I'm blown away by your foray into the expressionistic. Those drawings of that nature are sensational. They look so sure, my dear Mister +. (There's experimental stuff in there as well and that's cool as well. But I'm talking right now specifically about your more polished looking stuff.)

It's almost as if your personal moving line about in your sketchbook locked in to a style in which you have ennobled the sketchy line into a finished personal voice. You can see where it can express many different things, from gorgeous to edgy. And sometimes the discovery of what we're saying comes out on its own and surprises us.

And it seems to really suit you on whatever level you have grabbed it. They all work, from Klimpt to Schiele to Lautrec (who in my opinion is borderline expressionistic).

Anyway, the cool bit is do your thing, look confident in your marks, and you own it. You're there enough times now to show it's happening.

Bravo, lad!

Hey, did you see the doodles that I posted today? That's the result of me carrying a sketchbook around; now I'm hooked on sketching everything I can get my hands on. Sigh... I blame you. Re: the little kid painting. . .

It's an right awesome figure, Mr. Ploos. Very convincin' with personality and all. It makes me think you're holdin' out on us, sorta holdin' back like. . .

As to the background, it's very different from the figure, which is okay. You went graphic albeit in perspective so there's depth, but a different kind of depth. Compared to the figure of the kid it's graphic is what I mean and so it gives the whole scene a sort of staged quality. Again, for fans of theater like myself, it works fine, as an idea of place for the actor.

Painters have used this also where part of the picture is rendered and the other part attended to just enough to communicate. This one you did creates a very specific and clear hierarchy of what's important. And that communicates in and of itself. It also gives it a distinct atrsy quality.

I have seen music videos where a figure is spliced into a drawing (and there are infinite variations on that approach). It's expedient. You don't have to render a train station or whatever. All one needs is a kid and the sky's the limit.

One mechanical caution, when you are doing perspective on bricks, you should mind the weight and ratio of your brick surface with the line weight. Practically speaking, the grout or mortar is recessed somewhat and as it vanishes away one sees far less of it until it's invisible. At that point one breaks it up differently like glazing over a few of the bricks to show separation. But even with a very graphic treatment where one doesn't noodle all the details, the line weight should thin as it recedes.

But the kid is brilliant! The rest is interesting in a good way. And I think your explorations are paying off in grand fashion.

I'm not all that familiar with all the ins and outs of the program but couldn't you hit the [Undo] button a time or two to get it back? Generally it steps you backwards through the actions you just did in reverse sequence, and you take it back to the point you had your work. . . At least that's how most programs work.

Eg: The way it is commonly done is: <paint paint paint> <"Now there's a rather sticky wicket, eh wot!"> [Undo X times] <"PHEW! Right then, carry on as ya do. . ."> <paint paint paint>

Not sure what the limits are on your iPad regarding memory and amounts of undo's you have allotted. But you could try it and see. As to the command, there have to be keyboard shortcuts and/or a pull down menu item for it. May want to ask someone if you can't find it.

The [Undo] button has saved more than a couple computers from being launched through the window. It's the artist's best friend.

wow 96 pages, now that is dedication. :)

I like your portraits, they are expressive. The anatomy is not spot on but I still find them pleasing.

As for crits, If you are going to stick with the pencil focus on the hatching technique. Look at Paul Calle's stuff. Try and make the direction of the lines go the same way that the plane of the face might. Focus on where your light source is and try and really flesh out the values.

Good luck and keep it up!

Congrats on your Century of Drawings, Mr. Ploos!

I look at the number of pages and can say without equivocation - Now there's Eighty+

Bravo lad!

Stuff's looking Great. Getting into color. Can use it also as part of your drawing style as well, making drawing marks with a brush large and small for example. Some of Lautrec's drawings are like that and pretty tasty as well. Just as part of the fun you're clearly having.

Go man go!

Congratulations for passing 100 with such terrific new drawings, dear mate!
I found that Rowdy Yates wasn't but a TV series and the character was played by Clint Eastwood if I'm not wrong. Unfortunately I was just born in 1959 and the series was apparently not widely broadcasted in Europe.
I obviously know very well Clint Eastwood who, under Sergio Leone direction was a protagonist of those Italian made western movies who appeared as a revolution and were called here Spaghetti Western. He was therefore frequently here in Rome, in Cinecittą and all around here and in Spain where they found and set up those western scenarios and was a most appreciated star. Many other US stars were directed by Sergio Leone in those movies.
Similarly, especially in the '60ies, the period of the Dolce Vita, many other American actors (and Richard Burton as well) used to some here playing in historical movies or ancient time adventures like that of Maciste (played by an American bodybuilder), a sort of Hercules with an immense strength.

I re-read what I wrote last post. I didn't complete my thought - got distracted or something -- I meant to suggest to use color with calligraphic lines as a way for a draughtsman to put in color as opposed to a painting style or filling in the shape flatly like a TV cartoon. . . unless you're doing a painting or cartoon, in which case it's great.

The reason for the calligraphic lines is that really thin lines don't show off color. And repeating uniformly broad lines tend to be not very descriptive or interesting. So the comment was about drawing with color in your lines that imply color and jazz a brush drawing up a bit. One example is Lautrec.

But to do so you would need a graphics tablet or something that gives those kinds of thick/thin lines. And I'm not sure if you have that capability on the ipad. If not. . . nevermind!:D

Just as an alternative way. Not necessarily the best or not the best.

Been enjoying what you've done. Go man go!
