Another ambitious challenge, dear mate.
This last painting is the "Cristo in Croce", by Pieter Paul Rubens (we call Pietro Paolo Rubens since, after his early formation, he came, lived and painted some of his masterpieces in Italy where he stayed 8 years and studied the paintings of our greatest masters, Tiziano, Tintoretto, Leonardo, Raffaello etc., just like most of Flemish and other foreign painters did too because Italy was the cultural and artistic centre of Europe for quite a number of centuries).
It's one of the 30+ paintings recently stolen, taken in UK and recovered by Italian police.
It's kept in Napoli, in the Capodimonte Museum if I'm not wrong, one of our many major ones.

You're skyrocketing towards the top peaks of art in Your choices, dear ATPlus.
Rubens is coming along just fantastic and Michelangelo started pretty well.
Once again, on the latter, You're working to reproducing a burial monument, although it's probably the most artistically valuable one ever made. I guess Your humour there may be on the kind of immortality art may actually provide, which is not exactly the one we usually long for. :DLOL

Still trying to find a place to get me some haggis here in the very un-Scotland re-claimed desert climes of Southern California. A heck of a lot easier to find a burrito here aboot. I went to a British restaurant nearby the other day and asked the Mexican waiter if he had any haggis. He looked puzzled. Someone at me table said, it was a British restaurant, not Scottish. Oh, I said. Then I'll have the linguini. Not more than a couple British dishes on the menu. I think it had something to do with them wanting to stay in business. So they're like every other restaurant around here.

Anyway, the drawing of the trees is really very good, bub. Nice line. Good stylization. You get Rubens down and you have 80 percent of the artists of that period as well. So many tended to stylize vegetation in similar fashion. You did a good job of it. Nice and clean.

So in the cross-cultural spirit of the season, it's time ta fill them stockin's and grab yer Wacom tablet an' dradle, lad. Light the fires and moon rivers all around!

Very ambitious works as Caesar said. Good compositional exercises. Pretty soon you can toboggan to the cathedral and start sketching from the pics on the walls and maybe pick up a couple commissions.

Again a very good crucifixion drawing.
Dear ATPlus, if You wish to stay on this religious genre once You finish with Flemish & Dutch paintings, You may turn to books on Spanish masters and eventually to Italian paintings and masters. This last, should it be complete and representative enough, even if deals only with the period from 1400 (Renaissance) to 1700 (Tiepolo and Canaletto), would keep You busy on a variety of classical styles for not less than a couple of years to come ... ;)

The weather is sort of sunny, but it's not hot like the summer was. It has been drizzly on and off. Rained earlier in the week. But it's actually really pleasant. I'll take the drizzle if it means the plants are happy. Got to keep the plants happy ya know. This is all reclaimed desert and it would be quite happy to go back to being desert. But it's not looking like desert right now.

The clover is shooting up as are the other plants from the rain. Rather weird because during the hot months I could water till the cows come home and all I would get would me mold and fungus, and a lot less green. So there's something about the rain as opposed to sprinklers and hoses that triggers the wake up call. Great time to shoot photo reference on the flowers and grasses.

As to your paintings, I actually really like the bearded bloke. Nice sketch that. Free and loose yet it gets a character to it. The thicker paint stuff, well, it's sort of modern 20th century isn't it. A real contrast to the tight old Biblical scenes as well.

Go, Mr Ploos Go lad!

I like the painting of the guy with the bike and it kind of came to mind that a scenario like that only with the silhouette of a soldier with all his gear and weaponry we look really neat against that background .

Good stuff of late Mr Ploos. Those old cavalier poses are really very good, and I do believe you have an affinity for Rembrandt. You seem to get the spirit of the work pretty well indeed. And that pre-pram x 8 ma'am, why she's a real looker. And we lads had best look out for that jolly brolly. . . and that includes you, mate.

:o:DLOL Dear ATPlus, I hope You don't refer to a certain alien we're hosting since some time; short, with big ears, painted hair, a plastic face and eagerly looking to penetrate and possess other's bodies and minds! Don't worry, we like sometime to have shows of an emperor-comedian (just like the emperor Nero or Mussolini), but You should know though that we actually don't really have a leader in Italy since the fall of the Roman Empire, in case several ones, although we rarely need one, and for most of us the leader is just ourselves, even if we have each and now a crazy guy pretending to be truly our leader, but You can bet that when we have actual leaders, they aren't in evidence. Even Mussolini once said that the problem is not that ruling Italians is difficult, rather that's vain ... This is what makes us Italians somehow special and unpredictable, for the good and for the bad.

Now that you found 'Layers' your world will expand out 100 fold. Well done, lad.

As to your paintings, they're GREAT! Festive and bristling with activities as befits an old town in winter. Sort of speaks to the idea of compiled memories about the old home town. Literary and anecdotal like. I feel like I could eavesdrop in on any vignette inside the picture and discover a world of story. You're getting quite a knack for this stuff and bring it to life.

As to the sketches, just one artist comes to mind with a comparable vision, who just happens to be a sculptor - Rodin. Not counting his early sketches which were academic and tight. This is more how he sculpted.

Go man snow man!

China Pete has run off and started his own site. It's rather good to see all his work in one context. Heady art discussion as well. So as far as I know he's doing fine. His work looks good too. Modern like.

As to drinkin' and drivin'. . . oh nay laddie. . . if I did that here I'd be the next one up on that cross for you to do me portrait. . . just wouldn't be the center cross. . . more like the bad driver one that would be a'cartwheeling down the hill into the ditch.

Actually I only drink on rare occasions, almost not at all. Just me moon rivers is all and them in great abundance.

So the Chinese were the inventors of sour kraut? And the Egyptians developed beer. Next I'll be hearing that the New Guinea headhunters were the first to make strudel and the Eskimos done up the first bratwurst. All this outsourcing. Well, so long as it all gets to Munich by October Fest, right?

Across the street in the park where my dad grew up they would have the fire department come in every year and flood the park so everyone could ice skate. I didn't grow up there though. But I kinda got that was a big deal for him. Me, I had to pay to go to an indoor rink but I was more of an all-seasons at the beach kind of guy. So I missed that wintery stuff entirely after the age of 7.

Great choice Mr Ploos! Looks like we'll be havin' a grand time. May or may not be Munich as ye planned, but I'm sure this time travel spot's got somethin' ta eat n' drink as ya would reckon in a joint like this. Certainly camaraderie.

Hey, have you heard that bloke what's tellin' how Einstein got it wrong and the Physics world is on its ear suspecting we may for real be makin' time travel commonplace. We've yet to see it, but wouldn't it be interesting to go back and paint alongside some of these chaps, shake their hand, nick their 'aggis and reappear in the present with an original or two got for a bob before the prices went oop, eh?

Well then, Mr Ploos, hope ye got some some time ta kick back and let your eyes rest a bit and let someone else do the painting for a wee spell so ye can just watch some really interesting stuff.

This is a very cool time lapse on a couple side by side paintings from start to finish. Reminds me of me old days somewhat. I definitely have to get into portrait painting again. Sit back and watch the magic unfold. Definitely something to learn from this. And if you want to grab for yourself the images to practice, it's right there for ya to look at as you do your copy. Swashy style showing it going from blocking it in loosely and building it up. Remember to keep your paint not thick at the beginning and build up to thick finishing touches otherwise it could be a fight with the materials.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTTXr4RLRe4

And then a documentary on your ol' mucker, Rembrandt. . . Actually very interesting about the career artist and man and not a how-to on painting. Yet it's really fascinating.

Have fun with the time machine in 2013, mate! Happy New Years!!!!!!

The first joke of 2013!!!!!!!! And it's a corker, Mavis! HAHAHAHAHA.

I wonder what it portends for the rest of the year! ;);););););)

Now that you're doing layers, when you start a new painting I would recommend that on a separate layer you put some black or burnt umber paint that establishes your full value range. You can toggle it on and off as needed, or you can use it. This example painting is all about the lighting, and to show lighting you want to establish your dark and light pattern and then start working in the details and polishing it up. Your dark to light is really what these kinds of paintings are all about -- the lighting. So you may want to build lights off a darker base, at least where the darks exist. It will give it more punch.

Groovy stuff, matey! Got to love those old costumes for painting.

Thou art the very Shakespeare of the pixel. Whither for thou art? What ho. . . for sooth or consequences.

Or to quoth the radio Goons doing their Robin Hood show in 1950(something): "I shall split yer grotkin with a leather mackerel sheet!"

Makes ya want to dust off the time machine just to go back to the Elizabethan times and dally with the word smithery and sooch like. Next best thing would be painting as ya do.

yes I've made the brush almost like your Pic; at the tip used a strip of foil from my stomach pills as thought is was thicker then my kitchen foil tacked it on with a bit

of that thick brown selo-tape the type you wrap parcels with :D:D ok 1st try no go so added a strip of kitchen foil which I left the last 4" showing so my hand was in

contact threw to the tip then tried again success :D but since that, even when holding on the selo-tape it is still working :cool:
