The Venus has got more or less the same hair than You, dear ATPlus!:D
I like Your exploration across the centuries and the masters!

Dear Sandra, to be absolutely precise, in Italian Sandro is masculine (short form of Alessandro) while Sandra is feminine (complete name Alessandra). For us the name are either masculine or feminine and articles and adjectives have to match. We didn't keep the neutrum (like for Latine and then German) except for some personal pronoun, a form which neither masculine nor feminine (which is not sexual orientations or uncertainties thus is not relevant to gays, hermafrodites or transgenders :D). You may find neutum also in English, the third person pronoun "it", just to explain.

Mr Ploos! Yes sir, yes sir, 4 bags full. . .

Spring fever. . . is that the way of it then, eh?

You have me poofed out and breaking a sweat just reading of your pirate adventures, doin' the Douglas Fairbanks wall hop. An' you've a patch over your eye, for all your trouble and shenanigans lad? HAR!

Well, just be careful, ship mate. . . for a coopla years back when I was out back o' me 'ouse bustin' oop the shrubbery, the branches scratched me cornea and I was in a pickle, sort of visually impaired like. And I got a chunk of wood the size of a golf tee thrust through the fleshy part of me little finger, oh aye.

Springtime does strange things to us, lad. . . and there's the truth of it. So take care of yourself and don't push too fookin 'ard as it slows yer sketchin' doon a wee bit. . . although the nekkid bird looks every bit of alright. . . an' doon wif one eye tied behind yer back. . . masterful. . .

Carry on, Sketchin'!

Ach laddie. . . Played like a coontray & western tune. Looks like when Mars an' Venus broke up, she got the 'alf shell an' 'e got the shaft. . .or pillar or whatever tha' is to 'is right. Oh aye, was an awful toosle. . .

It's classical work yer doon. These gods, ye know. . . they may be immortals boot their garmentry 'as a shorter than 'alf life it seems.

And oh aye, Mannafig put a grand big smile across me countenance with that lovely drawing. She's usin' it as 'er avatar.

You gonna likewise use your own fine drawin' as thoos for yerself? You could be Hercules Ploos the Threadbare. . . aye that ye coold. . . Get ol' Venus clatterin' in 'er 'alf shell from excitement. . .

Dear ATPlus, I see You opened a public bath with annexed sauna there, with quite a number of people looking for fitting! :D:p
As for Your question on Hercules rival in the struggle You painted, I would like to know which refernce You looked at, but You possiibly represented him fighting against the giant Antheus, the son of Gea (the Earth). At first Hercules could not prevail because anytime his opponent fell on the ground under his strikes and moves, he recovered all his forces from her mom. Then Hercules realized the trick and eventually killed him by striking and squeezing him lifted from the ground.
Anyway there are at least twelve famous labours he accomplished to depict, even leaving his enterprises as a child and a youngster ...:D

Lookin' right handsome Mr Ploos! Smartly drawn. You're a right artful dodger. . .

You're sparkling with vim and Zhang, you are!

Love the attitudes captured in all the portraits you're doing. That's one of the cool things that you get into your work. They're people what ain't neutral and lifeless. These folks are there and you have a very clear voice about who they are through your drawing eye.

Sometimes it's good to have large clear photos to work from, sometimes less info in the original forces you to fill in the blanks as it were with your own projections. And since I really like your artistic voice, I think that actually works.

If they're out of 'aggis, you can 'ave some o' mine. You've earned it. :):):)

(just using this quote to identify the picture I want to comment on. . .)

The lad with the wig. This so reminds me of a character I've seen in a movie. He looks a little slovenly but wearing what looks like the affectation of finery -- ie. the wig slipping slightly off his pate. In more modern times it would be some fellow not comfortable wearing a suit. Middle management or the boss of some blue collar teamsters who has to deal with upper management as well as the crew. Or maybe even a musician or a writer. Feels like someone out of Amadeus.

You did a great job conveying the image of a real man one might come across in that century. Bravo!

As to your becoming the focus of photographers. . . well there's no surprise there lad. You're getting right famous. You fit the image of a Bohemian style artist, the keen observer now observed. . . and likely appreciated by those what see yer exquisite character lines and artistic features. You'll be as famous a colour as Blueboy. . . maybe the Brighton White'n. The beard helps I dare say.

Nice sketches too, lad.

Nice one, Mr Ploos, is that white bearded lad. Also the others, the flowers and the blue dancer. Was that flower inspired by your being outside hacking weeds and such? Good gardening to ye laddie.

On the white beard guy, I would like to suggest to occasionally, at least, to have your brush go crosswise to the form, like an engraver does sometimes, but you can do it subtle like. Doesn't have to be harsh and in your face, or his. Same colors, just different angles on the marks sometimes. I'm only saying this because the flesh paint around the cheek defies the form a little. Use it sparingly.

It's a good way to separate the planes, and thus giving it a little more form and volume. It also helps is see things turning across the surface, as well as it hints at perspective. A wee bit goes a long way though. But it's something else to try.

Just a new thing to keep in mind as a way to look. You may want to not ultimately have any strokes show. But you do want form and this is one way to make it clear.

The mouth in this one could turn with the form a wee bit more. The right side of it looks a little low. Covering it up with me thumb held out, it shows that the upper half works well. But the mouth is a little off.

Turns better and has more volume, don't you think? Not saying that painterly strokes are bad. That's a different look. And when you use those impasto marks on a fairly realistic head, you usually save it for the end game and just as accents. Beards and hair are cool cause you can get much looser with that than the common features.

But the comment was about the structure reading, if reading in a natural way is what you're wanting.

To go painterly with attention to the direction of the strokes, it's a balance between getting the form descriptively while using painterly panache. These styles rely often on the planes of the shape where they use the strokes a little like a mosaic because the strokes remain intact. (not necessarily little cubes like an ancient Greek floor mosaic, though that is one approach. It can be looser, but the way I'm talking about acknowledges the planes of the head.) Here's a Russian bloke you might not yet have heard of. Nicolai Fechin. He ended up in California and was very popular as a teacher.

http://www.google.com/search?q=nicol...w=1067&bih=487 (http://www.google.com/search?q=nicolai+fechin&hl=en&prmd=imvnso&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=mk-DT5vNIOvSiAKViYGPAw&sqi=2&ved=0CGAQsAQ&biw=1067&bih=487)

To go the other route with sort of wild painterly marks it's more to get a feeling of haste or a more reckless or frenzied feeling. These lean a little heavier into abstraction.

All these approaches defy categorization. There are an infinite number of shades for every approach. Just thought I would mention it for consideration. I think the form of the head reads much better with the marks either describing the contour or getting somewhat out of the way and letting the brain complete the image. But a good solid form goes a long way and lets one get artsy in other ways.

You've found it, Mr Ploos. As pointed oot by Ms Coops, it's a whole new world what's opened oop fer ye, lad.

Keep looking at the model and seeing forms work as yer doin'. Sooner or later if comes doon to a wee bit of formula, where the mechanics of how to affect a face becomes invisible to you and you become more focused on what you want to say. . .

And in that process, you'll find some surprise and delight at what comes of your turning the crank, as it were, with artistry. What I mean to say is that we do the steps, but there is that X factor that brings in the surprise which makes it fun as well as just being good. Just giving you something to anticipate when you're on the bus and you start using some of the stuff you're developing in study.

BRAVO!!!!!!! Really super work. Keep doing what you're doing and copying along with your own drawings in the field.

I think you're getting to the point you'll be wanting for a signature when you do your own stuff. You're getting to that point. :):):):):) WOOOOOHOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

D Akey
04-12-2012, 11:44 AM
Looking good, Mr Ploos!

The toned paper is good, but being that it is that dark you can consider using a highlight color to pull your dimension up a little here and there.

By comparison with your previous 2 drawings, the darker toned paper sort of kills your middle values and highlights unless you pull up the highlights. This is why one uses a toned paper often -- it's because you want the values (dark/light) of the paper to be a starting point so you don't have to mark that in. In your other drawings much of their success comes in how you did the middle values. Because the middle values you did include are so close to the paper color, it looses some of the worth of those marks here. So with this one it all looks unfinished. Go somewhat lighter and darker so your marks count.

I will also offer this, that in charcoal drawings, which is classical studio stuff, one has the advantage of going thick and thin with the slight turn of the charcoal pencil or stick. One can also press harder and softer thus getting more control of the values in the line.

Paint brushes are good to define a coming painting on top of it, like a blueprint/template kind of thing that you use in the painting itself. And your lines in this look wet and brushy a little. Nothing wrong with that, but you are not going to get the finesse with that than you would with charcoal. So they're two different mediums essentially and two different strengths.

But I can see your drawing skills, and your looking is right there. So you have not lost any ground at all. Just a matter of translating it into using this color as a ground. Push your darks a little more here and there and hit some highlights. You may not have to do much. So test it in different ways on duplicates so you don't lose what you now have.

Very exciting to see just how little you need to complete this one.

Go Mr Ploos, Go Go GOooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Mr Ploos, that charcoal is great. Very nice work.

Just for fun, and to clarify my other point about using the middle toned paper and going darker and lighter and letting the paper be the mid-range. I added a little smash up to your fine drawing. Please forgive the lack of calligraphic marks as I had to approximate it using a clunky ol' mouse that was on strike cause it wanted more cheese.

It's only ever a best guess what will work and what won't -- ie. where to put marks and how heavy and so on. So here's my attempt at illustrating my point. As they say on the car adverts about petrol mileage, "Your results may vary." :D

Hahah. I used YOUR drawing, Mr Ploos. Just did some computer stuff to muck the colors aboot.

Charcoal is great. And you did a really good job on the drawing I must say. Good rhythm to the hair. Has a bit of a 1930s stylization that was big here in Depression Era -- dignity of the working man in hard times sort of vibe. The marks are dark and bold, which implies strong character.

So you needn't use any more than ya done. It's perfect as is without the highlights.

Don't forget you can also make lots of varied marks when and if it suits you. Charcoal is very flexible.

Another thing you can do, if you haven't tried it, is you can tone your paper with a smudging of charcoal rubbed over it before you do the drawing. That gives you a mid range. And as a way to do the highlights, you can take a kneaded eraser and pull out highlights with it. The neat thing about kneaded erasers is that they can be shaped to erase broadly or sharp.

Go + GO GO GO!!!!!!!

"Take that, sucker!" sez you to him. Oh aye. Tell 'im yer not interested and he can take his wheres elseware. . . Sooch a pest. . .

Right, I made the background the same pink you had in your previous painting. It's a layer thing.

1) I picked the color from your previous pic
2) I made a new layer (there's those blinkin' layers again. . .) and painted it pink.
3) I made a new layer with your charcoal drawing on top of the one with the pink and assigned it to "Multiply". and all the white becomes clear and it sandwiches down in a transparent way showing the darks. (Note: I did it in Photoshop, but it works that way in Artrage as I recall.)

Fantastic, Mr Ploos!

I see you got the knack already. So now you've combined the best of both worlds: you have gotten your drawings to be stunners where you go from a white paper to dark, while you also have now gotten your toned paper which is starting in the middle value and going dark and also light.

The placement of your lights generally follows the natural lighting on the figure -- the usual places where and how the light hits the head. Also the amount of white you use is like adding spice to a meal. It's a matter of taste. You're the chef.

You can also use the white to vignette the head (in this case) away from the background as a way to pop the head forward in strategic places to feature the head away from the background. You did a wee bit and it works great there. But it's good to know that's an option to play with.

Doin' great! WOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Haggis all around!

Or was that Mac the Pencil? Mac the Stencil? Mac the Gloop? Mac the Palette Knife? Boot I digress. . . :D:D:D

Ye deserves a good song for these fine drawings, mate. Oh aye, that ye do.

The finish is most polished. Really grand work. Only thing to pick up is the structure a wee bit. But if you can finish it like that, people will regard what you put where as gospel. The nose ain't far off from where it ought to be, but I'll put in a pic of the line to see how one aligns things. You can make these lay-in lines on a separate level and draw on a separate one using your lay-in as a guide, like the foundation of a house.

It's like building a sculpture of a bust from a featureless face. You add the info where they belong. You're already very accomplished with the finish. Exceptional that. Truly. Bravo.

The last drawing is great. Very Cezanne in approach with the planes. But the refined one of the girl shows a different sensibility, more intent on realism. Both are utterly fantastic in their respective camps, Mr Ploos. You should be right choofed, oh aye, as am I.

Hi. Where's Pat 1940. Is she ok does anybody know :eek: Thanks

D Akey
04-16-2012, 02:28 PM
Aye. Pat1940 went to Canada again I believe. Read it in one of her comments in some thread or other. She said she was leaving (for somewhere to join up with who knows who - family I believe). Artists. . . flighty the lot of 'em. . .

The drawing you did just above is sensational, Mr Ploos! You're cookin' haggis now, mate. Your drawings are turning ladies' 'eads. . . You know they say that each picture is something of a self-portrait. Naturally that doesn't always apply. But I'd bet those eyes were not in the reference image, and part of you got into them, lad.

I like how you've broken up the head. Good line too. As you develop and explore your drawings more and more, you will find that you are going to use fewer marks in some drawings, and more in others. This one is in the 'more lines' camp. And as such it rocks. Could it do with fewer lines? It could, but then it would be in a different camp. I think it's very good proportions, and is very emotive. . . in a good way.

You're remaining true to what you have always managed in your drawings, and that is they feel like individuals. None of this "always follow the same route" for you. You find that special thing about each one and present it like a stage MC introducing an act.

Draw, ye lubber! Draw for God and country!!!!!!! <whoosh snap!> . . . but I digress. . .

I liked 2001 and 2010 as books particularly.

I had seen the movie 2001 a couple times back when it came out, and to try to figure it out I got the novel(ization). The book and movie were developed simultaneously. To my great delight, it turned out to be brilliant. Azimov was also very interesting to read.

I love that many people call Science Fiction 'SF'. But it has also been said to stand for 'Speculative Fiction'. That term definitely applies to these two.

So you're a sci-fi buff, eh, Mr Ploos? We should send you up on the shuttle to sketch some space aliens. They might even have eels you could eat through a straw out of a bag in zero G.

Great tone on the paper, Mr Ploos. That's a cool option, to tone the paper in places and then work it up off of that.

Asimov left us in the early 90s, I'm afraid. Always was super impressed with that he was the first to come up with the idea of telecommunications satellites or something like that that changed our world completely. So he was intelligent ahead of many. So don't feel alone in that.

Hollywood, writing to include everybody in the audiences, emphasizes to scriptwriters that when writing about an intelligent character, you always imply technical thoughts so that the audience "gets it" whether they could in fact or not. I think SF writers were often merciful in that one didn't have to go get a PhD from MIT to follow the story.

But the interesting thing is that SF writers are incessantly taken to task on technicalities. The geeks eat them for breakfast. . . so that lot has to really be on their game if they write about hard science type SF. They had fans who were actual astro-physicists and rocket scientists.

Also regarding implying technical things in stories versus really showing how it's done, you don't want to give some nutters a blueprint how to commit a crime successfully or build a bomb or what have you.

Me, I used to read for pleasure. Mostly now I read for information. But a good novel can still get me excited. If you have a suggestion for a book you're really enjoying, please let me hear the title.

D Akey
04-29-2012, 08:53 AM
Brilliant, Mr Ploos. Really terrific. Going straight to paint as you did it is not so far from drawing as could be a quibble. All the drawing work you have done has created mark making tools. Only thing may be that you have worked with larger tips on your brush or pen nib etc. So that adds a tonal consciousness to linear sensibility.

I think of Van Gogh a little bit, as how he seemed to keep his color work sorta linear. I think that was because he was very interested in Japanese prints, as were many of the more cutting edge artists of the time.

Anyway, you have nailed a personality in this one. There's depth behind his eyes/countenance, which is a neat trick to pull off. I like the outside stylization to his hair. The large graphic form of it lends a certain graphic arts mode of interpretation, although you also dip into traditional dimensionality as well. Nice combination. Love the colors too.

I'll fit this look with what was going on around the turn of the last century. Beards and styles of clothes also add to that notion.

Ms Coops made an excellent recommendation. Glad you did it. Looks awesome.

Go Man Go!!!!!!!

Holy mackerel. . . Mr. Ploos, I dare say, that looks like an blue sky in your last picture. You been conjurin' again, laddie? Oh aye. . . that ye 'ave. Cause you conjured up a paint pie and pulled out a plum on this pic. It's great color. Very rich and your marks are direct and where they appear to fit, which is how you perhaps have come to choose what goes where.

Your color sensibilities are comin' to the fore. . . maybe even comin' to the fives. . . and by my reckoning, fore ploos five make nine, which fits like, coos she's dressed to the nines, this native American lass.

Still you get amazin' depth of persona amidst yer rough marks. And believe me, mate, that rough marks coming out a fine finish all tolled, why that's nothin' less than masterful.

So now that yer paintin' like an artist, what ye gonna do now, hey?

By the way, did you say you just moved residence? Or did I misread one of yer posts?

Anyway, stay dry, Mr. Ploos. And paint, I tell you . . . PAINT, MAN!!!!!!! PAINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. . . boot aye digress like. . .

No wonder ye were cleaning the place up, Mr Ploos. Had to make space for the model, as ye would. Only in those seven bags o' trash, I think ye may have tossed her kit. . . all innocent and inadvertent like. Nasty business that. . . but I digress. . .

I miss the old emote icons. I figure you ground 'em ta pigment yer ladies fair and dark. A worthy purpose, and that's a fact Mr. Ploos. Ye dun it fer Art.

She looks relatively good, although her belly section of her torso is looking a little like a raisin-ette. She could indeed have a firm tummy, but you may have overdone what might be a little subtler and/or more anatomically precise in the smoothness.

I get this is a cross between natural and Picasso. So carry on, as ye do. You're cooking lad. And I am very impressed with you taking on a full figure. It's not half bad. My crit is merely to fine tune a little. But it's a complex image and for the most part it's a good job.

And please let the maid at least have a short French maid's outfit complete with black stockins lest the poor girly catch a chill when doostin', oh aye. . . that is if yer takin' requests :D

Wow. Mr Ploos. . . talk about warm and fuzzy sentiment. :D

It's a nice work. But my personal taste would not necessarily choose to be so spare with the airbrush. Not sure if you used the airbrush, or something else, but the marks sort of need a little glue to hold them together.

Personal opinion here. But with digital paint, it's free to use as much or as little as you please. Either way there's no diminishment of the the pixels if you choose to paint with more coverage. And if you don't, perhaps a tool that shows some intrinsic beauty in the mark might be better for when you want to marks to be eye catching unto themselves as well as to represent the subject.

Also, when you are using fewer marks, as you have, that kind of thing works well on toned paper because the tone of the paper is as if you covered the whole, ie. it's not 'gappy'.

But I get the heart in the doing of this one. My comments are merely about the mechanics for your consideration.

Go man go!!!!!
