What a trip! Very cool and interesting that last Picasso interpretation. I can feel the painting taking on a life of its own, where the subject is less important than the painting. Mysterious. Dramatic. Well done, laddie!

Cor blimey, mate, yuh dun missed a coople citizens for their census pictures. Boot yer dooin' a right fine pooblic service for yer local Department o' Motor Vehicles. Saves 'em havin' ta use their personnel to take all them photos.

So yer catalogged in at 2750, are ya. . . Right, let's see then. . . Of the official best guess of population in Brighton, there's 155919 on the census rolls.

That still shows at least 153,169 left. . . or so we surmise from best population guesses. Now yer Coontray needs you to go all Charles Darwin and get oot there and catalog each an' every one of em. You can go to the mooter pool and requisition a boos to take yer oot and aboot on yer odyssey.

Ploos, Mister Ploos, we would like you to go under cover and start pootin' some faces to those what's runnin' round off the roster, what's been playin' bloody hell wif our ledger. We cannot pay you, but you will be strong in the knowledge that you have served your coontray. . .

So off ye get, pad and pencil in 'and, and have at, lad.

God Save The Queen. . .

Old Yanks would know it, laddie. It's a bastardization of one of the more famous JFK quotes. Thought it might have made it over the waves ta the island. "Ask NOT what your country can do for you, (rather) ask what you can do for your country."

When asked about it, Kennedy said he 'stole' it from a slogan at his Summer camp. He just swapped camp out for country and they made him President of the United States.

So if there is ever any question about stealing and making something your own, this is probably the poster child for that concept of celebrating the spoils of creative larceny.

And the way I figure it, considering all those paintings you copy, I expect you should be getting a call from Parliament any second now to appoint you heap big Chief Constable. . . or at least a page Turner. :D

Norman Rockwell was in my opinion the most brilliant at creating scenes with HEART and plenty of it. Artists and photographers have tried to emulate his staging, and even his characters with only limited results. While they may get the look, they just seem to miss that special Rockwell quality.

Yes, he painted in oils. He photographed all his models in the poses and costumes he wanted them to ultimately appear in, and projected the image onto a canvas, traced it, and then painted it from very clear photos (albeit with his own exaggerations already worked out).

Illustrators of his high profile strata had to present rather complete tonal drawings and sometimes color comps to show the editors to get approval to proceed. That means he had ample time to really know what he was going to paint, as opposed to just blowing through a job cold for speed as so many seem to anymore.

Sometimes they even had several top illustrators all competing for a cover of a famous magazine. Rockwell often won.

Keep studying his stuff, mate. Learn all his chops and even though it will turn into your own style, it will take you far.

Glad you are looking at him. He was GREAT! And when I was an art student many people thought him far to bourgeois. I thought they had their heads neatly tucked up their derrieres.

Hi eighty, great paintings, Norman Rockwell was my favorites, my husband bought me his book several years ago and I painted many of his on traditional canvas, my kids have the paintings (at least I think they still have them) lol I have been tempted to do one on digital, maybe some day I will:):):)

OK. Let's try all a Norman Rockwell as soon as we can then!;):)
I will soon, probably in parallel with another master painting excercise I roughly sketched.
I've got a book too on NR, with probably most of his illustrations (its in Italian so not an issue so easy to find).
I like him very much, both as an illustrator and as a humble, nice, honest and serious man (this was the impression I got, reading his life at least and looking to his works).
In many cases he actually reached a level beyond that of a very accurate, professional, most renowned and sensible illustrator of an absolutely excellent school; he actually reached, in my view, the level a real and masterful "fine art" painter.

Thanks Mac for the info but must admit I was dissapointed to find he Traced but it seems to be the name of the game now I'm just old fashion :eek:

Ach, lad, I forgoot ta mention that yer paintin' of JFK via Rockwell was smashin' - a real leap forward, oh aye. I think it shows that all your sketchin' has been paying off. You're looking at the model well and you're considerin' soome o' tha moore subtle aspects of the 'ead what make it read.

As to Rockwell tracin' his images, it's because he was a professional. I assure you, he could have drawn everything the old fashioned way. It's merely more expedient to get it done. Allocated 'is time like so as he could focus on the story he was tellin'.

Ploos, Mr Ploos, just because someone projects, do not mean he did no project his own drawings rather than merely a cold photo right out of the darkroom.

The projector was a tool for 'im just like back to the Renaissance where they had the same disagreement about it bein' a grand cheat. They have records of rivalries among artists back then when they said using the grid was no bein' a true artist.

And imagine bein' the bloke what was sittin' in a tent with all the tend flaps down, and seein' the landscape outside projected on one inside wall of the tent through a small hole on the opposite side. So when he went and grabbed 'is paints, it weren't no cheat. It was a proper discovery what he was usin'. I believe it was very popular among the Flemmish with all their detailed little landscapes, aroond the Seventeenth century (tho me dates could be a little off).

Any hue, the best way ta learn is to do it freehand tho, as ya do. Keeps your voice crisp and clear as opposed to being more of a copy what ye see. Boot those of us who were intent on painting bodies and heads and so on all did it. And those what didn't were either in no hurry or they were doing stylized paintings for the looser Artistic look.

And I love how your voice comes through your Art. It's the most important, I feel.

.

... taking a screenshot is not difficult - I wanted to explain it to you, but with the help of google I found a website which explains it better than I could ;)
please click here --> http://take-a-screenshot.org/

once you've taken your screenshot with the "PrtScn" key on your keyboard, you can paste it into Paint (which comes with Windows), or any other image software, including ArtRage! just open ArtRage after you took your screenshot, and go to "Edit" --> "Paste", this will copy the screenshot into a new layer.

you then can either save the file as an ArtRage painting by clicking "File" --> "Save Painting" or "Save Painting As" (result will be a .ptg file)
or export the image by clicking "File" --> "Export Image File" (you can chose between .jpg .png etc)
or go to layers panel, rightclick the layer your screenshot is on, and click "Export Layer" (chose between .jpg .png etc).

save it anywhere you like, just remember where :D ... I am sure you know how to use your new screenshot as a reference image in ArtRage :) if not, just ask!

~~~
just to clarify - may I ask why you wanted to take a screenshot in the first place? if you run across an image on any website and want to save it to your hard drive disk, you can just rightclick the image --> "save image" and then use it as a reference image for your ArtRage paintings :)
hope that helps!
. . . Furthermoore. . .
I forgot ta mention that is one foo. . . flippin' hot drawing of that bearded fellow. The rhythm of the lines is super, and the way you are using the 'atchin' (hatching) to fill in the values is perfectly used. As ya know, the trick to it is the way ya can add line by line to the mass of dark slowly and as suits your work in a thoughtful way. The result is really quite good. And the structure is very good as well.
You'll soon need noothin' from me Mr Ploos savin' for me splendid demeanour. You're addin' to yer arsenal (I said arsenal) of tricks and tools right quick like, in marathon fashion. They ought to put you in a track n' field magazine, Mr Ploos. Slip ye a rugby ball, and watch the endorsements fly in.
Acturally, the Florentine chappie is a painter from the Renaissance whose name is Sandro Botticelli. You can Google him. You must have already looked him up cause you're doin' 'is ruddy portrait a couple times. Maybe only looked at the picture though.
He's the bloke what painted the puff piece: The Birth of Venus (or Venus on the 'alf Shell). . . The model was probably the wife of a certain bloke, though she was also the side squeeze of one of diMedici boys, Guliano, who was also Lorenzo's brother who you may have heard of as super patron of so many great works of art. But Guliano was later assassinated while in chapel owing to a running business rivalry. And as any screen writer would have it, Lorenzo escaped the assassination to turn the town upside down in vengeance against the family what had it in for 'em. . . but I digress. Watch the Godfather. It's shorter. :D
Anyway, Botticelli was one of their painters. Among modern Art Critics and collectors, he was considered a lesser artist until around the 1970s or thereabouts when prices of paintings went through the roof. Suddenly everybody started scramblin' ta collect 'im. And voila! Instant street cred.
His style is considered a linear approach which then gets colored in, as opposed to the tonal approach that Michelangelo used.
Botticelli has become very famous, almost iconic owing to some of his grander paintings like the Venus one.
I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't an old relative of Roger Daltrey the lead singer for The Who. Give 'im a fringe coat and a hand held megaphone and strike up the Renaissance tune favoured by wandering minstrels: "m-m-m-m-my g-g-g-generation baby. . ." and then tell me I'm wrong, eh?
Oh, laddie, you have me chooklin' . . . very witty to study the master forger. . . hahahahaha. Looks like yer both about doing copies. Master Zhang and the Right Honourable Xerox-san Ploos. . . .
Zhang and Xerox, forgers extraordinaire! Side by side you two would look like ZZ Top. :D You should call yourselves ZZ Rox.
You are a clever fellow, I must say. Very funny but also there's a wee bit o' the research scholar coursin' through yer veins, Master X.
And what's got me so pleased is your work is really shapin' oop.
Hey, Mr Ploos! Lookie here!!!!!!!!!
You got a right proper complaint!!!! Congratulations, Sir! You have arrived :D:D:D:D
I personally thought you were going to rile 'em up when you included breasts on a naked woman <shudder>, but sadly the reaction was modest. . . unlike your model. But I felt pained that nobody thought it dirty enough to move it to After Nine <bummer>
So I shall give you a blatant accolade for achieving being the focus of a vocal cheering section at your rapid progress.
As to my Zhang reference. The one I thought you were referring to was the Chinese master painter and forger of every Chinese painting style. And that it was in keeping with the Picasso quote: Good artists borrow, great artists steal. In other words he's saying great artists make what they are influenced by their own. And Xeroxes copying and copying. . . well I thought it was funny anyway. . .
Ah, the e-mail that I was commenting on with the complaint was deleted. Seems I'm going to have to quote anything just in the interest of continuity and not sounding completely off-the-wall.
I'm rather sorry you couldn't have read it because you would have likely been flattered that someone would have thought your stuff good enough to complain about copying too closely without crediting (What they said anyway).
So, Mr Ploos, love the lady in pink.
Hi Mac Yes I had read !! was suprised amazed :eek: the only thing I Didn't
like was the tone . still being digital you see works of art now that
would make the old master's turn in their graves as there is no hold's
barred with digital if you can see it you can do it :D :D :D
here's an example if you look you'll see the sun has changed and the dog
fishing line and enhanced the rest of the picture and if i was Skilled with
the tool's and layer's could moved stuff around but it was done for my
own enjoyment not for showing. as for Accolades not sure Don't think
I've ever tasted them SLAINTE E +
Cor blimey, mate. . . You sure do talk in pictures. Worth 1000+ (let alone the eighty) words, I reckon.
Still tryin' ta put me finger on the accent tho it be a sharp crisp one.
Dante's got noothin' on yerself, lad. Been on a quick tour o' Hell, and now ye got yer scheduled on a side tour of Heaven, lifted oop by a high flyin' Beatrice.
So our 'arry's playin' the part of Virgil the bus drivin' royal in this one, eh?
Should be quite a ride. . . stoppin' at the beach looks like is scheduled. Cowabunga, dude!
Oh aye. Not only that but they could print it out and sell it, with the buyer having no idea that it was not authorized (ie. rip off). That does happen to fine artists all the time.
In the early days of the internet, artists would put all their work online with good resolution to be seen, as an electronic portfolio as it were. And they did get taken.
Artists are free to do what they want and present how they will, of course. But I've noticed that many of the older artists don't have nearly as much art up as in the past, and they put watermarks in and try in all manner to prevent that form of theft. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
It's probably the biggest can of worms an artist faces -- once it's left the artist's hands it gets really dodgy.
But look at what it's done to professional musicians, or software designers. At least with musicians so many had gotten into contracts where they sold the rights to their songs away, and thus it became a screwy situation where they had to pay royalties to perform their own work. So that's a different shade of the situation. At least with bands the internet helps them sidestep those funky deals and go more independent. But that doesn't mean they can get paid for the music out there once it's out.
But Peter Pinckney our own forum chappie, he got screwed royally by some outfit in a foreign country publishing his music without paying him. And there was little he could do to stop it. And believe me he tried.
As to painting professionally. . . I don't know. They can pick your bones. If you sell your services as an artist, that's a possible way to work it. But. . . it's a new business world.
Caesar
