The first time I heard this song many years ago,it knocked me out. It's a story song, much like Mickey Newbury used to write so well. I just knew that it deserved a followup of some sort - book - movie, painting,etc.. Well, it never happened, so finally, I took a run at a painting based on the song, and as they say in Nashville, it goes something like this .....:)
----------------------------------------------------

She was a flower for the takin',
her beauty cut just like a knife...
He was a banker from Macon,
he swore he'd love her all a his life...

He bought her a mansion on the mountain,
with a formal garden and a lot a land...
But paradise became her prison,
that Georgia banker was a jealous man!

Chorus:
Every time he'd talk about her, you could see the fire in his eyes...
He'd say,
"I would walk through Hell on Sunday, to keep my Rose in Paradise...

He hired a man to tend the garden,
and keep an eye on her while he was gone..
Some say they ran away together...
Some say that gardner left alone...

Now the banker is an old man...
that mansion's crum-ble-ing down...
He sits all day and stares at the garden...
not a trace of her was ever found...
(Chorus)
Every time he'd talk about her, you could see the fire in his eyes...
He'd say,
"I would walk through Hell on Sunday, to keep my Rose in Paradise...

Now there's a rose out in the garden..
. its beauty cuts just like a knife...
They say that it even grows in the winter time...
and blooms in the dead of the night...

barnburner,
My heart has just been overtaken by this gripping, romantic, soulful
piece and accompanying lyrics that reads more like a poem, pulled up
from the deepest recesses of one's being. So touching this is, an
art driven and inspired lament of love. :)

Oriane - Thank you sir. Much appreciated. :)

Mairzie Dotes - I am delighted that you saw and felt
in those lyrics, what compelled me to do this painting.
Thank you!:)

Thanks Jasmine... It is a sad song, but, what made it strike home with me, is that there is an element of positive also. Clearly the old banker killed her to keep her from leaving his "paradise", but in the end, her spirit prevailed, as witnessed by the rose that refuses to die.. It growns and blooms even in the winter, and every day drives him deeper and deeper into guilt, as he is faced with his evil deed.
Anyway - that's the way I see it... :)
Thanks a lot. :)

Oh, so poetic this work is and there's seed of trues in this statement... nothing can us make happier then the feeling, that we are trully and deeply loved... no amount of money can give us this measure of happiness and security.... i would run also...:=)Nicely said and done, Barney. :)
