View Full Version : a great uncle

When my grand-daughter was about one, she was at that stage where the only people she wants to be with is Mom and Dad. And she hated me. For some reason, she was more than content to sit with my brother (her great uncle) Personally, I donít see why anyone would consider him anymore than just your average uncle.

Beautiful portrait, especially the guy. I would soften the edges on the kid, so she would not look so cut out. Otherwise i like this very much.

Thanks ARTGEEK and AT-TA

You are exactly right AT-TA.:) The painting has been sitting unfinished on my computer for several months, and every time I went back to it, she gave me grief, and it was put back on the shelf for another day. The dress and skin colour has been changed more times than I can count. Sometimes when you look at the same thing for too long, you can't see the obvious.

I will probably follow your advice and bring the painting back onto the digital easel at least one more time

I like this a lot. Having painted many very young relatives in the last year, I know the problems that present themselves. I learned that a small soft face has very few or No hard edges. The eyes have lashes that define, but some of the edge is just lost. The mouth reveals an edge, but not a consistent line. There is more subtle shadow around these areas than first noticed. Hope this is helpful.

thank you everyone for the nice comments, and especially for the suggestions.

L Skylar Brown - (There is more subtle shadow around these areas than first noticed) You are so right. I'm sure I painted over versions that had softer lines because I was trying too hard to put in defining edges (that are not really there) I usually keep several versions of a painting, but for some reason, I just used one this time.

coops - (what a kind face the gentleman has) My brother has one of the most even tempered, always in a good mood, life is good attitudes possible. Somehow, it doesn't seem natural...

foxytocin - (The color tones look sun-lit..) The colours just fell into place somehow - never happened before, and I don't expect it to happen again.
