My grandfather was a German immigrant farmer who settled in the farmland of southern New Jersey. He spoke English with a thick accent his entire life and I never could understand him. (When I was seven he sent me to the shed to get the "humma" which I looked for in vain for five mins before he came in and told me "der thinga tha' pounds the neggles inah!" and pointed to it right under my nose.)

This could be a portrait of him in his later years. He was a fountain of plainfolk wisdom and was fond of saying "We get to soon old und to late schmart!"

Thanks for posting this wonderful painting and making me stop and think of him today -- he passed away in 1977 when I was at college.

I also love the thick and thin paint handling going on in this!

I find facial expressions are very difficult. I look at this and I can see an old man (defined as older than me) with a sort of right sided smile that extends up to his eyes and a mouth that I can imagine is missing a lot of the front teeth since both upper and lower lips are pulled in somewhat.

I think you did a masterfull job on getting an expression that seems just right for an old farmer.

AL, i am so glad that this pic reminded you of something nice in your life. I grew up on a farm and that explaines why in my mind i am so often looking for a theme in those places. Love the animals, when they got killed i cried and hated the killer... butcher... for a long time. I remember those kids...little goats.. beeing taken to the butcher... they knew what was awaiting them... they yelled their hearts out... i couldn't hear it... it was such a rich life for a kid to grow up... and yes i had a grandfather.also.. smoking a pipe and sitting by the kachel stove... talking about the wars so am so glad i took you in those times also...:)

He has a sweetness about him that I think is very charming. At-ta, do you have a link to the original photograph you used for inspiration?
