Hi everyone,
Happy to come back to the forum.

Well, i've decided to group few of my digital paintings or illustrations in the same thread to be more visible and to compare the evolution.

This one is the first i ever done. Not completly finished but started with Painter and still on it with AR3.

Thank you Hinket for the kinds words.

I like so much to "re"paint our Masters' masterpieces.
For me it is one of the best way to learn how to paint and in my case, how to use the digital tools like AR3 or/and Painter.

With "Juan" i'm not completly satisfied, because the reference i had was a bad one
I have another one that i'll post soon and i'll show diff steps.
;)

I hope that it'll help.

ps : i have a little prob with the JPG conversion, from AR3 snapshot to PS.
The result is a bit to "orange" comparing to the original...?
I'll shake this out.

I never use the tracing process.
I'll show in a next post, the way i paint with digital tools. :)Hi Weeks, is the first time I see your work , I hope you don't mind for the question.
good idea to show short or long tutorials on the subject.

If you don't mind, I will have a suggestion to have :why you don't open a project like "remember the old masters" or "we all love the old masters" os some thing of the kind.

The best artists was doing copies from another great artists, is a good thing to do, I am sure that there are some potential interest from some members artists.

You say :
I like so much to "re"paint our Masters' masterpieces.
For me it is one of the best way to learn how to paint and in my case, how to use the digital tools like AR3 or/and Painter.,
I totally agree with you .

ps : i have a little prob with the JPG conversion, from AR3 snapshot to PS.

I'll shake this out. Well, still, you are not out of Velazquez colors.

Do you know this reference ? : Juan-de-Pareja (http://www.diegovelazquez.org/Juan-de-Pareja-c.-1650.html)

I like his self portrait :

This is my first pleasure, Weeks, to see your artwork and what a pleasure it is! This is so very well done that words simply escape me! The level of detail with the textures and colors is simply remarkable. You've done this master proud!

I was so intrigue with your work, I just had to go check out this master, Diego Velazquez, and I just fell in love with his incredible work - stunning in every way. This is one of the things I love about this forum and viewing others paintings because I also get introduced to some of the old masters' works where I would have never have done on my own. Thanks for sharing and I am so glad you're back to share your talent with us!!!

Dear weeks, when You feel discouraged with the great masters, just think that many of their paintings took weeks or even years to be completed and the use of their disciples too ...
Only absolutely great and very valuable paintings come anyway from You, both Your studies on a top masters, such as Velasquez or Your own conceptual artpieces!
Here in Rome there's a unique Caravaggio exhibition up to June, with his paintings from all over the world, a master the young Velasquez learned from when he lived, painted and looked at his paintings in Naples.

Lando, thank you. I hope that i'll show new stuff soon as possible.

Alexandra, thank you. Because you are talking about a "teaching lesson", i would like to try something.. See below :)

Hi Ceasar :). Thank you for the words and the talent behind...
I'm absolutely agree with you when you explain so well, the necessity to take example about the relation we must have, as "painter" or disciples, with the time. It's because i need like everyone more o less time to complete a painting, that i have to begin new of them in the meantime.
Concerning Carafaggio (i adore this Master precisely because he was one of Velazquez Godfather) i think that i'll try to paint one of his masterpiece very soon. The exibition you're talking is a pure "merveille".. You are a lucky man... :)

Here is a new Masterpiece from Leon Bonnat i'm working on.

LBonnat is a GREAT painter.

I would like to show few steps of my process

1° - because it's a masterpiece, i have to respect the proportions of the original painting. But the prob is that i missed a tool with Artrage that i found with Painter. (a sugg for a next ver of Artrage ;)
The technique is one of the Michelangelo's : how to paint fresco.. ?

A Grid ...!!! So :

- I use 2 computers (A and B) with 2 versions of the same software "Painter" and 1 version of Artrage on the PowerMac
- I download a jpeg version of the painting that i found on the net, in the Comp B (often very bad definition, unfortunately)
- I choose the same grid and i begin to rough the painting in the Comp A

2° - When it is done, i apply a " red juice" (in that case with Painter, but i could do it with Artrage if i had a grid that i described) and a first white chalk layer.

3° - I export the rough in Artrage (PS) and i begin to render...
It would be more efficient if i had that intelligent grid that i'm looking for... ;)

Still en progress...

Best,

Weeks

A quite ingenious and complex method honouring the great masters. I have much admiration because I tend to be absolutely undisciplined when painting, also when I'm in awe in front of a great painter's masterpiece.
Your outcome is stunning once again and always, irrespective of the inspiring master, style and even when You paint by Yourself.
You provide always great care and superb quality in Your artpieces!

Dear Weeks, such a result with just few strokes tells even more eloquently of Your capability! I like very much the impasto effect You got on this last painting, whose figure is absolutely amazing, by the way, and I wish I knew how to easily get something vaguely similar indeed.
Beyond You excellent great masters studies, Your concept artpieces are really artful too.

Hehe :) Caesar...

To answer your kind words and your kind attitude for everyone out there in this forum, i would like to contribute if i can and show few quick steps in a little tutorial. There is no purpose except something about using AR3, my own way.

My english is not good enough to give details, but i'm sure it'll be ok. :)

For me, the most important is to try out every tools you find and to test...
The subject is a very well know character© ;)

- 1° creating a base with nothing
- 2° on another layer, using the sticker tool, very powerful, to create "noise"
- 3° for me, the most important, to work with the layer texture tool to change the "background" of the layer

Weeks
03-24-2011, 06:40 AM
4° - a new layer with noise
5° - the sketch, the scribble or something...

Caesar
03-24-2011, 06:45 AM
Dear Weeks, thank you very much, dear friend! I didn't dare to expect such an exquisite courtesy and secret revelation!
Don't worry about English, it's not may native language neither and, in case, You may use any mix of Italian, French, some German and a little Spanish if You wish to express Yourself (whichever or whatever You feel easier to use) :p
I'm going to print it too and start soon having some fun testing Your teaching!

Weeks
03-24-2011, 06:45 AM
6° - the idea is to add "digital flesh"..
7° - and to play with the canvas texture..

Weeks
03-24-2011, 06:49 AM
8° - playing with the tone
9° - adding texture and so on... :)

Caesar
03-24-2011, 06:54 AM
WOW! Thank You so much! How many interesting lessons!:cool:
Thank you so much!

Weeks
03-24-2011, 07:10 AM
10° - every tools, eventualy, creating your own
11° - and looking for textures...

I would like to propose a suggestion to the team, a very important and missing tool about the textures. I guess not complicated to program :o
but very, very usefull...

A tool where you could store, on the canvas, all the textures available.
A tool that you could move around.
A tool with the one you could, that way, zoom in and out each texture, rotate and superpose 2 layers of textures max, and use with all the diff kind of brushes... More usefull than Painter and PS together :D

Think about it...

Weeks
03-24-2011, 07:44 AM
Now, i have a version that is a sort of "draft" version.
This is the base to try another directions or just to finish the painting

I'll wait a certain amount of time before to change things...
Looking for the light (for me the most difficult), new textures, new rendering.

That why for me, it's important to paint masterpieces, just to learn with great masters...

Best, :)

About the project i had, it was movie projects actually, with a company in Europe and we did few things but because of the banks and the global crisis, we've decided to stop all the process involved until we could see something more optimistic. We bought a Red Camera and different tools for "nothing"
That being said, Digital painting now is a hobby... Until the moment...;)

Alexandra, thank you so much for the words.
Caesar, héyé my friend, nice words. Thank you.

I'm starting a new "shot in progress". I don't know exactly what to do with it at this point...

Weeks

your drawing and use of textures and color is like a master painter. the whole thread is a treasure. I love seeing someone really using sticker brushes as texture for portraits. you are the best advertisement for texture brushes ever. and an amazing contemporary painter.

Coops, so good to read you :)
Screanpainter, :o:o thank you. It's true that for me digital painting is possible with textures and "digital flesh". I guess AR3 could be better than it is right now,... Wait and see.
Thank you Earle, :)
Ceasar, thank you man, i do my best, and i'm happy to submit my work, my digital attempt to you all, and i'm very sensible to your comments. ;)
Borilius, oh thank you mate, i like your work too :)

Here is a old quick "beta" painting i did that i have repainted today. All about textures.

Best,

Weeks

Hi Weeks, just browsed through your thread. Have missed it for a long time it seems. Truly inspiring thread. Love your attention to details and the way you produce texture in your work. Congrats on this last post - it has a strong visual impact,I particularly like how your texture of the background simultaneously strengthens the perspective and resembles the defining shapes of the cloths. Its contrasts and lighting do the rest, just great!

Hello Weeks...Great thread you have here, its amazing that you use almost identical basic idea of under-painting,then painting light over dark paint, very old and well tested procedure in oil painting..I use similar technique, but very much simpler, using roller or chalk in a very small size to begin with, and increasing the size for detail as the picture progresses...very nice to see your technique,I think I still have quite a lot to learn, thanks for showing your way on this thread, excellent work Weeks......Jack.

Caesar, thank you my friend for the comment :)
I have a bunch of brushes, but i still have a prob with the speed of my machine. Maybe our BigTeam leaders (no offense :o ) could do something to improve the multithreading process. Even i have a MacPro 8 core, it's a mess, and specialy (sorry for that) when i compare with the other softs Painter or Sketchbook pro. Because of that, i have to work with file 1000 x 600px...
In that last painting, i didn't use, strangly, a special sticker.. :D
It was the "stylo Feutre" with parameters on a layer with transparency. ;)

SCP, thank you for visiting the topic and for the comments.

Belvrog, nice to see you there. Yes, for me, this thread is a lab. I can improve the level of the paintings but i can test things out just to see how it works for everyone.
In my opinion, we should spend more time on each paintings, because digital art needs time to get better and better. But i admit it is a great pleasure to get good comments and support from the community, as soon as the job is done. But the world is looking at us :D

That being said, here is a new masterpiece i'm working on since a certain time. It is another art from a Master that i adore : Velazquez !

Of course, it is in progress :D:D:D

ps : i have to say that i use 2 softs for that : Painter for the structure of the painting and the firt "juice" and AR3 for the rendering and texturing.

"message to ArtRageTeam : i miss new tools and power" :D

Best,

Weeks

I recognised immediately this most famous Velasquez and I must say that this WIP shows, simultaneously, a stunning fidelity to the original painting as well as an original interpretation Your personality gave to it. It may be considered pretty finished also at this stage, so good is already the overall balance.
