Scarlet Macaws.

Thanks to Bumble for her sky technique and to hanzz for his collection of tutorial links that helped me find it (search the forums for "hanzz tutorial index").

In case anyone is interested, here's what helped inspire the painting.

I served as a Mormon missionary for two years in Manaus, Brazil--the heart of the Amazon. It's an amazing place. When it was founded, the mission leaders chose as our mission mascot the Macaw ("Arara" in Portuguese) because we teach the possibility of eternal marriage and Macaws mate for life. I managed to find and take home a beautifully carved paddle with a single Macaw (photo attached, carved by Trindade Manaquire).

After returning home and getting married, my wife and I thought it would be nice to display a painting next to the paddle, with two Macaws to capture the symbolism. Since we couldn't find one we liked, I decided to try one myself. I based it on several references, but mainly on the attached photo. I enjoyed painting it very much--it reminded me of us :)

Obviously you took "ownership" of the original, made it your own, and produced something unique. Wonderful work on the details and the outcome is as D Akey has noted: striking. :)

WOW wow and more WOW!!!

That is gorgeous! REALLY amazing work!

I've always lived around big cities in the US so the only time I've seen McCaws are in cages in pet stores or at someone's house caged.
I can't even imagine seeing them in the wild interacting with each other. That would be awesome!

Great great piece and beautiful story as well! :)

I always love these birds, and this painting is wonderfully painted. The feathers are so realistic, very well done. And of course, a story behind the motivation makes it interesting.
