I used to love working with that messy stuff:). Thought I'd see how well AR emulates it. Have to adapt a little, but, I think I'm liking the results. What do you guys think?

PWQuack I think you did a great job on this. Well done.

Wow that is really well done. I have used charcoal only a little bit, and didn't enjoy it one bit!:D

Just one beautiful piece, PW!!! The hair and eyes are done so fantastically well! I tried using the AR's charcoal but I just did not like what the palette knife did to it. I just could not get it to work well. What I use to use with traditional pencil and charcoal pencil was the blending tool (those gray paper stumps) which is just perfect for them. But, you've been able to make it work for you and it looks really good.

Very nice. Are you doing the blends with blurring and layers?

Actually it is 1 layer. I used the wet blender, constantly adjusting the drip size, to prep the shadows for the blur knife. There were a number of times I had to back up and redo spots until I got the hang of wet blending as a prep tool.

Thanks for the comments everyone.:)

Wow! I'm wasn't expecting that level of finesse and detail from charcoal. Certainly the rich blacks say charcoal. But the fine linear detail in the hair says a harder mark maker, like graphite pencil.

Really looks good!

PWQuack,
This is one ducky artless predicament ... my visual feathers have
also been sadly ruffled because there is no charcoal painting here.
Whazzup oh web footed Art Rage friend? Did the piece fly south
for the winter?  :D ;) :)

PWQuack originally posted this thread on 02-02-2010. My guess is he ended up removing the image for some reason during the last 8 months. Such is the consequences of interaction on the internet.

Possibly he moved the piece to "After Nine" in which case that may
be the reason that I hear feathered wings anxiously flapping ... for
eight solid months though? Wow! :D

What is this "After Nine" to which you refer? I don't understand. I still can't find the picture.

(update) I just discovered what "After Nine" was. The painting must have been pornographic in order for it to be moved there.

Yeah, where the heck is Wayne anyway? He pulled all his pictures from all his threads. His last post in March. I did find some of his work for sale online. You can search for PWQuack if you are so inclined. Hope he is alright.

If I was chuck, you would be dead by now. You're lucky it is only a colored pencil portrait I drew in artrage.

the spray tool selection menu? Am sorta "chicken" of clickin' on yer above

I just layered the pencils like I would with real colored pencil. With the exception of the eraser, I didn't use any other tool.

nayrb,
Before this thread moves into the Art Rage vaults of no return I wanted
to take the opportunity to comment on your wonderful portrait of Chuck
Norris ...it is absolutely excellent! Your charcoal rendering really captures
his persona amazingly well. The detailed attention to the western clothing
is admirable and just love the whimsical glint in his eyes and flirty tilt to
his hat. Extremely well painted! :)
