View Full Version : My tribute to Frazetta - Updated

Hey All,
here's my tribute to Frank Frazetta.
When I set out to do this all I could think of was dragons and women. So I based it on The Grodon R. Dickson's Dragon Knight Series, Dragon & the George.

I did this as a gift for a friend, will be printing it on canvas and mounting it.
I can't put the huge file here so the details are pretty much lost, but I'm also uploading a cropped part to show the actual feel of oils :)

Here's to a great fantasy artist!

Long Live Frazetta!!

Edit: Many Thanks to blurymind for spotting the center of gravity error. Now both she & I stand corrected. :) ( she's still leaning in the crop tho :))

Fantastic and excellent painted. So lovely. I really like it. :):) How big is the original size? I am picturing it on a real canvas once you mounted it.

Thank you so much Pai.
I had such great fun doing it too! :)
The original size is 18"X24"@150 dpi so it's 2700X3600 px. I first started it @ 300 dpi but had to reduce because my computer was screaming ;)

Wow Fly, I don't have much time this morning-but I was so happy to view your painting! You are great!:):):):):):):):):):)

Oh, Fly, your work on this piece is simply stupendous!!! The work alone you did on the dragon is just masterful in itself! How lucky this friend is to get this wonderful painting done by you!

Thank you so much Eileen. It's all thanks to AR3 I could do this. I have been trying to paint this since a year now, (I'd promised him a painting about a year back) this is probably the fifth version of the idea. I was never satisfied with any of the paintings so far. & then suddenly BAM, AR3 made it happen.

I second Sketchism words. The treatment of the dragon is so cleaver painting light over dark giving the piece that special antique effect. Thanks for the lesson.

Flyguy, you are awesome.

01-18-2010, 08:53 AM
Completely amazing. Brilliant work!!!!!!

Absolutely spectacular, dear Flyashy! :eek::cool::):):):)
This made me think I should simulate a Frazetta-like painting, sooner or later.
I've to find the best approach to reproduce his style ....

Fantastic Flyashy! AR3 has certainly agreed with you, well done mate!;):):):)

01-18-2010, 10:04 PM

Hoho, thanks Sketch, such a great compliment!!
And don't you dare donate that tablet, who will do those magical paintings then??!! :D
@Bob Row, Thanks, no lesson was intended :) The technique was just a happy accident. :)
@Gray, Artgeek, Thanks so much :)
@Caesar, Thanks so much, and if this made you want to paint in frazetta style I'm very happy and quite eager to see what gem you'll paint :)
@SCP & Coops, thank you so much :)

I am happy to see that in your hands, the program produces what your mind commands with beauty and art. Wonderful Fly:eek:

The girl looks as though she's about to fall forward. She may have been drunk off of the dragon's hot breath :D lol. JK. This is one great looking painting. I like the fantasy images :)

Wowwwwwwwww!!! Beautiful work!

How big are you going to print it? Just wondering how much you can "stretch" a 150 dpi image before it pixelates?

Joanne :)

looking pretty good. I want to see more dragons now:)

flyashy- This is soooo cool. Fantasy and Sci-Fi illustration is my favorite genre. To be truthful I don't get much of a Frank Frazetta vibe off of this image in terms of style, but it has loads of very cool flyashy in it. :D:D:D

@Oriane, that is such a great compliment. I really appreciate it :)
@Evart, lol, yeah, she was falling in love with him :) tho I corrected it ;)
@Joanne, Thanks so much:) I plan to print it at 18X24. ideally I'd have at least 300 dpi, but I plan to print on a canvas so that should cover up for loss of resolution. I've done that before and the results were quite decent. I learnt this from a guy who used to print. He recommended 150 dpi @ 1:1 scale for large prints on canvas which will be seen from a certain distance, so I've been doing that. :) btw, I haven't managed to comment on your posts yet, but those animals you do are fantastic :)
@Blurymind, thanks, and so do I :)
@Fashmir, thanks so much, yes, I know it's not an out an out frazetta. I can't even hope to achieve something like that, at least just yet ;) (practice, practice, practice!!) But yes, I did with the image what I do with my music, imbibe it, distill it, and project it in my own flavour, so I'm so happy that you say you got lots of flyashy off that :D Thanks so much!

Fantastic work. Killer. Top drawer. And just down right beautiful. :):):):):)

01-21-2010, 08:39 AM
Beautifully done. I simply love skillful explorations of the fantastic in art, whether fantasy, science fiction or horror, and this definately qualifies as skillful. While I detect a strong hint of Frazetta, this is clearly all you. Absolutely lovely.

01-21-2010, 08:43 AM
Very nice image! Love the colors in the wing.

01-21-2010, 09:41 AM
Thank you Byron, Jbyrjbyr & Dmerchen for such kind words and encouragement. I really appreciate this :)

Thanks Flyashy for the info on resolution. That always confuses me! 300 dpi is ideal I know, but I do all of my work on a pen-enabled (Wacom built in) laptop. The screen is kinda' small, about 7 1/2" x 10" and the larger the file size the more that I have to zoom in and out and in and out...! Makes me dizzy!!! Lol!
Someday I'll get that great big Cintiq and be in heaven! ;)

Also, thanks for the compliments on my funny animals! :D

Joanne :)
