Very beautiful portraits. I really like the texture of the first one. That had me right away. It just looks so much like real medium. The second one is gorgeous too. Looking more like ink wash than chalk in that one. Both are lovely!!

Thank you, first one(Kardelen) was my first digital art on Artrage. I didn't know how to change paper settings, just opened a new project and started drawing. It came with default settings and result was like that. It was like normal paper and look like real drawing. I noticed when people around me say. Anyway unless i say, every work of mine is digital art. Thanks again.

It is often said that a woman's hair is her "crowning glory" and in this
case you have confirmed the mention with artistic excellence. All of

Would love to hear more about your techniques for hair, though I suspect it's mostly a case of hard work and patience :) well done.

Thank you Caesar, mannafig and Hammers. There is a little technique for the hair.

1. Detailed hair: This takes long time and and patience like Hammers's said.
2. Speed hair: Drawing quick lines around. This has to be in harmony with face and also with eyes's blur/sharpness. If you can't manage this, whole picture will look bizarre. It will look like 2 different drawings in one.

I will try to explain how to draw detailed hair;

First of all i'm changing paper setting. Paper roughness to 0%, this will allow us to gain smooth surface. Very similar to bristol paper but not the same. I will leave other settings default. By the way i'm changing the paper's light sometimes. It changes to which object i draw. I'm using only chalk tool while i draw. Pencil tool is not for me.

Choose Chalk Tool's 100%, make a black area for try:

46223

Change the same tool 30% and draw white curves and lines, do it slightly up and down:

46224

Choose Palette Knife tool for making lines blur. When doing this, don't push hard. We need a little...

46225

Choose Chalk tool again and make tool size 7-8% and make sharp lines this time.picture

46226

After that we have to make blur again.

46227

Now we can do last lines. Be more careful in this stage if you don't want to return blur stages again. Chalk tool size 1-2%

Please continue from my next message...

cihan
07-04-2010, 08:46 PM
Now it must be look like this(i chose random tones and made random lines):

46228

Make sure where the light comes from and make brighter and do shimmers right. It will make your drawing more glaring. And also if you have patience and time, you can repeat those blur-draw lines thing more. This will make your drawing better. This is old fashion thing but i love it :)

Thanks everyone who liked my drawings again...

And i hope you like my new one:

cihan,
Amazing amazing AMAZING talent here and many thank you's for
the "hair" tutorial. You make it appear so easy ... who would ever
imagine that using only the chalk tool with strategic blurring could
produce such a realistic effect. Would like to try the method in
hopes that the locks would not closely resemble spagetti noodles
by the time I was finished. If so, I could always title the painting ...
"Medusa." :D :)

I'm getting some progress while i drawing hair. Still taking like half of whole drawing time.
I tried to draw backwards this time. I drew dress first, right shoulder, left arm, face shape,
lips, nose and eyes. Hair was last of course. It took almost 8 hours. But worth it. I printed
this on A3 paper just a few minutes ago. Believe me she is looking much much better in
paper, if we compare with digital screen. I tried to make more details this time. I didn't
want to make it rush. I hope you like it. I was listening Zero7 and Message to Bears while
i drawing. They helped me a lot...
48545

I didn't add frame. I'll add both of them soon. Frame makes the drawing more attractive and stylish. I'm so tired right now, my right arm feels bad :D

I find it most interesting that bushier eyebrows are happening here. Is that a sign of the times or just part of hyper realist painting? Not the most flattering to my personal taste but clearly you know what you're doing. It could be the fashion these days with the higher end models or women in the public eye, so they all copy that look. In my day they were tweezered and shaped.

Anyway, you sure can render detail. And the cool thing is that it looks like what it is you're depicting -- textures and values and all that. An amazing feat of visual diligence. Well done.
