The ship is plain black, maybe soften that too?

perhaps some fine detail on the distant horizon and some light and shadow on the boat

Water is one of the hardest subjects to capture in any medium. Peter Pickney has a lot of really great paintings with waves and heavy surf, and he helped me out when I had no idea what I was doing. http://www2.ambientdesign.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21366 is a link in the forums to some of his suggestions. Hope that helps!

Hi Willf,
For improving any seascape start by observing the sea, whether from ref pics or real life. Look at the waves how they move and flow and what direction. Is the horizon level......I use the ruler to get that just right. Do the colors in the sky reflect back on to the water......
For your 2nd artwork with AR your on the right track.......
The sky looks real good............TJ
