I choose the shape of the hair and prefer airbrushing solid dark color with wide strokes.
Next I choose a step up from that base color and narrow down the point of the airbrush tool to look like that of a hair strand.
On your color wheel with your original base move gradually up to the desired lighter shades with your airbrush strokes narrowed to the size of a hair strand stroking to desired type of hair- curly, straight, fine, or course-working upwards in that color pallet to the desired shade of the hair adding strands here and there to the lightest strand-also considering what area the light is coming from and widening the airbrush stroke and placing that at the area of light.
This is one of the ways that I have fun with this software-hope it is of help to you.
Sandra :)

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for the quickie tutorial. Would you have the time, by any chance, to post some small examples for those of us who learn better when we see things practically applied?

And cripster, here are some additional starting points for you. The first is about real (non-digital) painting, and as such, it may be even more beneficial than the many Photoshop-specific tutorials out there. At the very least, it's good info.

Hope that helps,

JustG,
I am so sorry for three year delay-but so glad to be back posting. We had a family emergency and it was extremely difficult to do many things that I loved.
I know I am not one of the best here, still learning, but just thought I would post my way of drawing hair sometimes. I use a smaller line though when I want detail and highlighting.
Hope you see this and it helps.
Love, Alexandra
