Here is the promised portrait tutorial. For my subject, I chose Billie Piper of Doctor Who. She plays Rose Tyler and is Doctor Who's companion and love interest.

HOLEY SIMOLEONS! That's the most ambitious and detailed tutorial I've seen here. You are to be commended for both your on-the-mark guidance and the time it took for you to put this together and share it with the community. Bravo Michelle. :)

Thanks so much Robert! Glad you enjoyed it.

OMG, fabulous work, thank you for sharing. I'm passing this along to a bunch of art students. A very good lesson, well explained in words and pictures. Thank you, thank you.

Thanks Suzi, when I can finally get my computer to record my steps, I will post them as well.

I'm using your tutorial and had just one question. You mention on one of the slides that you use a resolution of 360 (I assume DPI)...

What are the dimensions of your picutre (pixels)? It looks like only her head fits on the screen when you are 100% zoom.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. If I can get mine to look at least like a person, I might just post my first AR picture!

03-03-2009, 05:36 AM
Sorry I didn't get back with you earlier zerogeek, the dimensions of the painting are fairly small, about 2500 x 3500 pixels. I had to make it smaller than normal to account for the size of the airbrush tool. The larger the airbrush, the smoother the painting. So keep that in mind when you start the painting. I resize and then test the airbrush, the resize again, the retest the airbrush until I can make it at least a 1/4th the size of the face. That's usually a good rule of thumb for it. Good luck and be sure to post your portrait afterwards.:D

HOLEY SIMOLEONS! That's the most ambitious and detailed tutorial I've seen here. :)

Robert, you actually used the word SIMOLEONS! Well, I do agree with you that this painting was made very finely. And for Dali, The detail is almost perfect and the overall rating for this picture that i would give it is 10 stars! Woo Hoo!:D

03-19-2009, 08:56 AM
Wow, thank you Kailbarr! Appreciate the rating!

I'm new to ArtRage and this tutorial is what helped me to become a member. After having the program for about a year I finally realized how good it actually is and started taking it seriously. I love this tutorial!!! I'm not familiar with the show but the artwork took my breath away. I am currently trying my own portrait of Jessica Alba and need your help! I would like to ask that if you had the time could you please elaborate on your airbrushing techniques with the skin? I am not at all shutting this tutorial down, I was only wanting it further embellished as just a little picture of a before and after did not show me personally how to do this technique. If you could only put another forum down with this in mind I would be very happy. Once again excellent artwork and excellent tutorial thank you for taking the time to read this long response.

in spite of her avatar, Dali is a very pretty young woman by the way, so you may want to rephrase the calling her sir. :)
