View Full Version : "Paint my cat" thread

04-06-2006, 03:19 PM
Hi all!

How about a cat painting thread, ( or other pets for that matter? ) Here's a couple of pictures I managed to get of Tycho if anyone's stuck for inspiration. He's not a -terribly- photo-friendly cat really and tends to look a bit miffed whenever anyone takes out a camera :)

04-07-2006, 02:38 AM
today i had a dream of a cat in a cup, with some paper inside i think it was a newspaper and it just looked like your cat... but smaller, the first image reminded me of that :D maybe i'll try to draw your cat in a normal pic and in a cup...(and no i wasn't going to drink it or anything it was just too cute inside, and i was taking care of it for a friend of mine...yup all of that in a dream :D)

04-07-2006, 01:02 PM
Hi D.R.

I liked the challenge of painting Tycho. I spent a lot of the day on it, with long breaks in between, just to eat..get up..make a cuppa, go for a we...ll you get the point.
anyway, ive had enough, for now. will try add some more detail tomorrow (its 1:58am my time)

so for now, i've just posted some work in progress pics.
i was thinking of making a cat character in more of a comic book style (and less detailed) but after readiing your cat thread i've given the style (or costume) to Tycho...for now :)

04-07-2006, 04:00 PM
Let it be known that ninja-usagi has perfectly captured the essence of my cat. Great pic!

04-07-2006, 04:44 PM
this is a great idea, my cat drawing with Chalks~~~!

04-07-2006, 06:45 PM
These are awesome. Tycho the ninja!

That last one is great too. I'm sure everyone around here wishes Tycho was that friendly :)

04-07-2006, 06:45 PM

Nice idea. One version comes from here north snowland.

04-10-2006, 11:05 AM
this is only my 2nd go with art rage - not too bad considering - even if he does look more like an owl!!

04-10-2006, 12:48 PM
Those two are really fun. I like the texture and expressive strokes!

04-10-2006, 11:46 PM
These are great!
Sweedie, your cat made me honestly laugh out loud.

04-11-2006, 05:34 AM
cari_CAT_ure ,Caticature, whatever it' s a funny cat.
I love cats they're delicious with cranberry sauce

04-11-2006, 08:22 AM
Hehe. Very cool cats, Sweedie and Hanzz.

04-12-2006, 12:45 PM
right, i think its finished.
i'll go mad if i think of more to add. i'd already saved a jpg to post when i had a last minute re-think and so added the clouds (which i hope look ok)

to use only artrage for clouds or other such effects, which could probably be done with a plug in on some other paint soft', is a challenge and an eyestrain!
but very addictive and fun.
i should sleep.

oh, hope tycho likes it. :)

I updated it on my DeviantArt page in case your interested http://ninja-usagi.deviantart.com/ but also added it here aswell.

04-13-2006, 05:08 AM

great painting,great idea.

04-13-2006, 11:07 AM
Right, that one gets hung on the wall. Sort-of a warning to guests here.
Very cool, Ninja-usagi.

04-15-2006, 04:24 AM
to Andy and the whole Rage family:
If you don't know where is your cat - I have good news... You can calm down now, I found Tycho among the AR layers.
He is fit and be in very good condition... i will send him back to NZ as soon as I can catch him.

: )

06-16-2006, 02:40 PM
Hello all,
A quick sketchy go at Tycho

06-16-2006, 04:29 PM
Hehe. Very cute, Selby.

08-12-2006, 08:12 PM

Cats has sleeping some time, maybe cats waking up.

Testing one photo-paint work.

AR2 works fine.

I draw this image and notice those cats eyes. Snow cat has round eye-center but home cat dont has? Is it a different nature-evolution basic kind being home-cat than wild snow-cat? I have guess that snow-cat was home-cats grand-father-mother-father-mother-------etc.

all in Artrage 2 Chalks and the airbrush :D

i don't have any pet, i used a reference picture for it

02-04-2007, 07:08 PM
Hi Dave

Tycho is one beautiful cat, I love cats. This is my quickly painting.

02-05-2007, 10:40 AM
All these cats - aaargh! No really, I like cats, really!
To ninja - Clouds seem pretty easy in ArtRage. What I've been trying (with some success) is putting in some random strokes of white and different grays, then twirking the palette knife around in there to get nice fluffy looking skies. You can also pull in some sky color here and there for convincing cloud shadows. Try it! (Also try lowering the knife pressure).

02-05-2007, 12:22 PM
I just couldn't resist trying my hand at painting your cat. So here is my painting. I did this in a little over an hour. I had a struggle trying to make fur look good, but I think this works.

02-05-2007, 04:38 PM
Cheeze, they're all so good!, what fun !!! here is my attempt, thank you AR.

02-05-2007, 06:38 PM
I tried posting my painting earlier but it was too big. I thought that the GIF files were smaller than JPG, but apparently it ain't so. From now on (next post) I'll stick to JPG. Any how - Heeerrreees Kitty!

03-27-2007, 04:15 PM
Here is my big (really big) cat!

Hahah. How did I miss this thread for so long.

Funny gzairborne

From the tracing images section. :)

07-07-2008, 04:15 PM
lovely one gz:)

07-07-2008, 05:26 PM
Thanks Selby. :) Must keep Tycho in the limelight. When Tycho is happy everyone is happy. :)

07-08-2008, 07:59 AM
This is not Tycho (I had one cat like him) ,
but I worked on cat idea and probably it go in here anyway.:)

07-09-2008, 05:02 PM
Our cat Polly.

07-09-2008, 09:21 PM
Wow! These are all beautiful and fantastic cat paintings...Wonderful expressions:)

07-10-2008, 04:47 PM
Well, here's a rough one of Tycho. What a pretty cat he is, really! :)

Anyway, great exercise with a nice motive. I hardly ever do such things, so thanks for the inspiration! I'm not sure, if I will or even should go more into details, but I'm somewhat compelled to.

But before I totally forget, here he is... very rough, though.

And, of course, I found myself refining this a little more, so I'll add the version 2, as well.

07-11-2008, 01:11 AM
OK, ok, ok, ok, I just had to make one of my own, too. Otherwise I'd face a wall of jealousy, bit and scratchmarks and a furball-surprise in my socks.

I can't believe you followed the name of the thread, Taron. You painted MY cat!

Nice work everyone! Really excellent thread.

07-11-2008, 12:13 PM
wow Taron hes beautiful -great eyes very soulfull:)

07-12-2008, 05:16 AM
Taron, the three images are very well done, I like the most the first one.

07-13-2008, 05:27 PM
here's my go at Tycho.:)

07-14-2008, 12:53 AM
So many cute images, really! I can't resist adding one more...
This is Gypsy, or at least as far as I could make myself paint her... at some point it simply got kind of exhausting, but I wanted to try making it feel more like fur. She's really hardcore to paint, because of the just killing amounts of hues and values in her fur! It's a pain, but fascinating.

So, yeah, it's enough to bring the point across and it's totally her. :o

(should the devil ever ride me, I'd continue some more, but I somehow like it like that already.)

07-14-2008, 04:10 PM
Rain11, it really looks like Tycho, very well done.
Taron, Your's "Gypsy" is a dream, I love it very much.
I can understand that you did work a lot to it but the result is splendid;
thank you to share.:)

07-15-2008, 06:58 AM
here's mine!:):):)

07-15-2008, 11:56 AM
beutiful Taron:) i love the fact its not over finished...stopped at a great point i say.

Shirley:)lovely one..such a cutie.

07-15-2008, 01:33 PM
Awwwww..... these are the most beautiful cats I have ever seen!!!! Makes me want to go out and buy one... so sweet!

I love them all, hard to pick a favorite!

07-15-2008, 03:27 PM
Psssssst...... don't buy one, adopt one from your local humane society, or animal rescue. So many need homes.

Take care all......Julie

07-17-2008, 05:06 PM
Tycho decided to pounce on over here where he belongs, since I forgot to put him here too.:)

07-30-2008, 09:34 AM
I love it! I love the "Are you addressing me? This had better be good. . ." attitude with the barely raised eyelid.

08-02-2008, 07:11 AM
I like this thread, these paints are amazing!

It's possible to paint my cat too?
I only have this picture because he's dead now :(

08-25-2008, 09:13 AM
Hi all,
this is a nice thread, and such wonderful cat paintings!!! So different, but all of them really charming!

I got to know a friend's cat some days ago, and thought it was a real character...what do you think? ;)

09-01-2008, 01:28 PM
Inspired by all the works on this thread, here's my first submission to this forum. A portrait of my cat Jessica, who I had to leave behind in the UK when I emmigrated to Australia last year - she is happily living out her days with friends and I get updates now and again as to her progress.

It's the first work I have completed from start to finish in Artrage, but hopefully won't be the last. I found it difficult to know when to stop painting - I feel this one was maybe a little overworked.

I'd like to dedicate this submission to my mother (RIP 08/12/06) who was the most cat-loving person I know, and whose birthday it is today.

Thanks for the inspiration, everyone :)

09-06-2008, 08:51 AM
Hello! here come's my first drawing with artrage!

09-12-2008, 08:40 AM
I'm really new to oil brushes and no knowledge of its technique so...
I hope you'll still be able to recognize it Dave :)

09-15-2008, 08:18 PM
This is something that I threw together last night, have started to fill it in, and Ill post the finished result,
(All of the works on this thread blow me away)
Used stencil , and tracing to get to this point.

Well half a day later, this is actually the first portrait I have Ever done, and it feels good to put it out there

09-16-2008, 11:53 PM
Caught my cat resting with her best mate.

:D:Da quickie of Tycho!!!!:)

10-16-2008, 08:58 PM

kinda old...

10-17-2008, 06:14 AM
Hi all,
This is one of my four cats, she's a rescued cat from Celia Hammond cat
Sanctuary, she's a lot smaller then my three boy cats, they pick on her, so I do have a soft spot for her. How anyone could leave such a pretty creature, beats me, but I'm the winner because I get to see her each day.
All the cats are beautiful.
I tried Dave's cat with air gun blended a bit much.

10-23-2008, 09:25 PM
I painted it............

10-27-2008, 10:21 AM
Oh Viktor, poor kitty, but well thought composition.

11-15-2008, 09:26 PM
Dear Sandy , I like your version of Tycho, did you try the effect:
" ctrl K "? poush on that and wait, with ArtRage open, all night if you let it you will have the surprise in the morning, is very funny:)

11-16-2008, 06:09 PM
No Danny I've never used control K. Is that control K art rage open, is that while using a tool, I'll try anyway. Thanks.

11-20-2008, 11:24 AM
Well Dany I tried control K and after a little while footprints of invisible kitty walked all over the page, I left it on and went to bed, hubby came in and shouted oye you've left that computer on, so I quickly did a screen print made it half it's size, but it's Tycho done by the Art Rage foot print kitty.

11-22-2008, 09:15 AM

Hey Dave-I love your cat! Here is a drawing of my Tucker. The man who has taken over our home and hearts. I was at a store and a woman had him and five others in a shopping cart one evening trying to find homes for them. He climbed up to me with his white mustache and green eyes and that was it, I asked her to hold him for me as I had to get my groceries. As fast as I could- I shopped for what I needed and out I came and my kids pushed the cart and I held held the little guy. While I was driving home he left my daughters lap to sit under my chin. That is how tiny he was.
Had fun with this one. :D

08-12-2009, 03:11 PM
It so great. Thanks a lots.

12-09-2009, 11:16 AM
Just got round to looking here again, senghou, just love the kitty you've done he has amazing expressive eyes and his fur is done beautifully, well done.
Sandy I can see you've had fun creating Tucker in the abstract, great job, love your loosely painted cat too.
I love how you became the owner of Tucker, like myself you are a cat lover.

12-09-2009, 03:22 PM
My Rocky one of my four cats, he suffers with asthma poor soul, this damp weather he seems worse.

12-11-2009, 05:19 PM
Oh Sandy, this is beautiful!!!!

12-12-2009, 09:24 PM
Mathew, welcome to the forums. I went and had a look at your take on tycho in the gallery. What a fabulous piece, extremely modern look. Love the fishies :)

12-12-2009, 09:52 PM
hey Dave! Welcome to the forums! This forum is built on a pretty sweet chunk of php, you can actually upload images straight to the artrage servers as attachments. Just scroll down and hit "Manage Attachments" should explain itself from there. =D No embeds for us!

12-13-2009, 12:53 AM
Thank you Matthew for your kind words.
As Gray stated, it is pretty easy and fast to upload paintings here. I think the largest one may load is 800x.
Just click Manage Attachments
make sure that you have exported and saved to desired area in jpeg no larger than the file can handle, I go no larger than 800x.
Once you have the painting located-click-open, and upload.
I like to do Preview Post first to see if there is anything that I wish to go back over, and touch up a bit.
Some will include attachment if it is especially large.
Hope this helps Matthew. Welcome to Artrage!

12-13-2009, 01:02 AM
I just viewed your painting Matt. Toooo adorable!!! Looking forward to more!:)

12-14-2009, 05:00 PM
Welcome Matthew, I too looked at your gallery, some interesting paintings, Like the black and gold one and your cat one with just the fish heads left, just lovely. Welcome to our addictive world.
Thanks for the comment on my cat Rocky Sandy.

12-14-2009, 07:32 PM
Well, this was fun. No tracing or color picking, 100% oils. Nothing else. For a while though, I thought I was going to have to have my art licence revoked.

12-15-2009, 06:01 AM
Love the colours Gray, he's really staring. Good job.

12-16-2009, 04:11 PM
Done in artrage 3 studio, watercolour great, cats mostly watercolour some oil in places, there's a few issues with pencil and inkpen, but I have the cheapest wacom so the problem could be mine, my text has changed I cannot see what I've done. Background on a layer done in chalk then went over with the roller.

poor little tyco :(
he has a fag in his mouth. i didn';t know they used cats for experiments
will post a pic of our cutie Ruby and see if anyone can do her justice.
she is in your face, a very licky cat ( likes to wash mummy and daddy) eats icecream and always waits for cereal left over milk. :D
she also is an icecool hunter.

02-05-2010, 02:03 PM
Your cutie Ruby looks similar to my cat Treacle she also waits for the cereal milk.

02-06-2010, 10:45 AM
My painting cat:o i hope you like:)

03-01-2010, 10:57 AM
Had to post my kitty too. Well, I actually have two. Sisters and they are almost identical, so heres a picture that could represent equally both of them :)

03-06-2010, 06:53 PM
There was a thread where we all posted pictures of our cat(s). I forgot where it was, and I don't have the time to search for a long time.
I promessed I would post pictures of mine.He (used to be a "he " :D ) is now 16 years old. It's a Siamese Fawn.

His name is Fievel, like the famous mouse......

He is in the arms of Maire, an adopted orphan from Vietnam, adopted by my wife's sister. My wife is the very proud godmother .

03-10-2010, 01:53 PM
Beautiful child Hanzz, and beautiful cat. Wonderful photos and paintings: Sandy, Admin, Liz, Sabena, and Dark Lotus. I enjoyed viewing these. This is a great thread. :)

03-10-2010, 02:43 PM
Cats are so neat.... Love the images in this thread....!!!

04-23-2010, 05:49 AM
In AR2.5 we had this " Ctrl+K" surprise but in AR3 I don't see Tycho anymore :o:)

04-23-2010, 05:55 AM
Today I find an old file of a sketch with Tycho and had the idea to work more on it. I used mainly the simple fur sticker in AR3 and also some fractals done with Apophysis, it make it all different ,
I like it enough to show it !:)

05-09-2010, 04:17 AM
never knew about the "ctrl+k" thing! just did it, that's absolutely hilarious! what else is hidden like that in 2.5? and how did you get it do do that in the colors you wanted?

05-14-2010, 02:32 AM
froz; out attach not working our is it studio pro demo ???

05-14-2010, 04:41 AM
couldn't get the fun one out so put this one instead

05-14-2010, 02:24 PM
