Here's an idea we've been playing with the last few days on another thread...

Someone starts a painting with an image that took 30-60 minutes to create. The post is given a number in the Subject line, to make it easier to track the paintings as more are started.

The next person adds their vision to the work, again taking 30-60 minutes to create. This person adds their work to the thread in the reply section. include the number of the original and a number for at which point they added their work (ex: 1-1, or 1-50, etc...)

You can work on a painting more than once, but should try to let at least one other person modify it between your 'turns.'

The work you add can be new or from a previous image you have done.

Here's an example of what we accomplished in one day with the first painting:
It started with this sketch of a wolf: (See attached, image 1-1)

after just 6 steps, it now has become quite a nice piece: (See attached, image 1-6)

(This painting may still be worked on, if anyone wishes)

The only other rule that I can think to add is this: :D ANY ARTIST MAY ALTER THESE RULES AS HIS OR HER IMAGINATION LEADS!

I hope everyone has fun with this. We are now open for business!

Thomas

P.S. if someone would repost this with the images imbedded, I would be very grateful... I just can't seem to get them in! :?: :? :?:

Thanks. Music is that time when i was 14. Finnish word are different but feelings are same kind. Songer name is Kirka who sing this song at Finnish language of -71. That time i start to learn dance-music and dance because that time Finland countryside was full of dance-place. Allmost every bigger (about. 500-1000 livings) village has some kind of dance-hall or dance-house. Some of places name was workershouse or village community house and some is made special for dancing-culture or other that kind of happenings.

Singer, at nowadays. (Finnish, sorry.)

Holy guacamole, heikki!

It's the Finnish blues? Man! I thought to myself, this song sounds so perfect - so harmonious and abstract! Since I didn't know the words I could add my own.

It sounded like the perfect background to our group's combined spirit of creativity and joy reaching out across the whole world, without borders, sharing a creative moment and a chorus or two in good cheer.

Now that I read the lyrics, I just want to withdraw back across the frontier to my village and feed my pets who are half dead from neglect.

I'm so bummed . . .I think I'll dance.

Haha. Celeryhart, I did the same thing.

heikki, I was joking before. I also grabbed the music and have been listening to it all night.

It sounds so great, it's almost mystical in it's lament. He has a great voice and it works so well with the choral back-up singers. Being alone, set against the sweetness of the many.

I would imagine the lyrics were quite profound for those who left home and family seeking to make a life for themselves in other parts of the world.

Thanks for sharing it.

Stick, hmm.... i mean tablet penstick........Anypath many of Finlanders use stick when skiing in winter with skiis, and skiing also in that our 'green winter' but without skiis (not because brains dont work right), and that summer-skiing we callet stick-walking (sauvakävely).
And if you do stick-walking your tablet penstick work fine and you dont have neckpain. So, everybody, start to walk with walking-sticks.

D Akey.... My gosh, I found a whole bunch of versions of Oh Mamy...
go check these out.. scroll almost to end of page... there is a whole section of Oh Mammy by different singers .. I haven't listened to all of them of course.. but Kirka is my favorite so far. I like a really "soul" sounding one.. so if you come across one let me know who it is ok..?

Celeryhart - Wow!

Did you hit the motherlode or mammylode or what?

I agree, I like heikki's the best.

There are plenty of mediocre ones too and I could only listen to so many, lest I loose the mystique of the kirki version.

There is one that I picked from the middle that is realy close to the Finnish one. It's in English.

It's slightly different, but they got the choral part just right, and the lead signer is bluesy, The big difference is that they loaded up the instruments a bit heavier. But it ain't no sin. It's just different and the best English one I happened to select at random.

pop tops - mamy blue.mp3

The following one sounds like it was influenced by bossa nova Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66, and is not altogether unpleasant. Similar chord progressions. I like it. Spanish I think. I don't know Portugese and they may have similar words.

twiggy - mamy blue.mp3

I think anybody that longs for reconciliation or reconnection with their mother (which may not be possible any longer) is a pretty universal theme apparently.

Thanks for sharing the results of your great sleuthing!

 8) :D :D :D

Snap out if it is right.....lolo... now I"m on the hunt for the English lyrics....... can't find them... and I don't know French or Spanish.

hot cha! Finger popper.

golden gate quartet - many blue.mp3

I doubt you'll be crying from this one, cause it's oddly upbeat and also a little hard to understand some of the words.

Not my favorite, having heard the bluesy versions. But not awful.

I think it misses the contrast point attained between the solitary singer's isolation and the choral calling of bygone home and community -- the heartfelt price of striking out on one's own.

If you just want the lyrics, I think heikki linked to a page with them written out.

Celeryhart
09-06-2006, 11:26 AM

Good continue that drawing, DAkey.

:)

I translate the Finnish word of that mamy blue. My translation skills is not so good but i think that it it quite that path.

Song is that time 60-70 when hundred thousand Finlanders goes mainly to sweden to work. Young mens mainly leave home and some of them come back to empty home to see mother and found home empty, child has leave homes and parents was die.

Also it has deeper level, which means that boy leave home, start to live own life and forget mother, and when come back it is too late, mind-level i mean. Thats happend when you start own life ans must leave home, hometown, and then forget mother.

----------------------------------------

Words.

(PS. I dont put that o mamy between..)

O mamy

Is gone year ten
so mistaketrip i know that
now i found home so cold
so cold

I can not touch your hand
can not pardon ask for you
only boards those windows I see

now all i see

i hear

i still, still, still

When i leave i remember tears
now are others leave also
i walk to court so desert

so desert

so many times to home way
turn but still stay faraway
now i have get the pay of that

and pay i get

i still, still, still

i still, still, still

i hear

don’t find, find, find here

i miss you

donf find

Thank you heikki!

My goodness! No wonder that is so profound for you! It's the story of your life in a way. Well, there are at least two of us who got quite moved by it.

Thanks.

celeryhart,

Here's other versions in English that I transcribed by hand because I could focus on the lyrics better by doing so.

Mammy Blue
transcribed from the Pop Tops version (because they sounded more faithful to the Kirki version in Finnish).

When they stopped I switched to the Cherry Laine version who continued for a couple more verses.

Note:
The lyrics vary somewhat with the different performers.
I think the Bossa Nova version in Spanish by Twiggie is very different.
The difinitive version exists somewhere, but in Finnish?

(Pop Tops Version:)

Chorus & Lead improv.:
Oh Mammy, Oh Mammy Mammy Blue, Oh Mammy Blue
Oh Mammy, Oh Mammy Mammy Blue, Oh Mammy Blue

I may be your forgotten son,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
Who wandered off at twenty-one.
Chorus: Oh Mammy
It's sad to find myself at home,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
And you. . .
Chorus: Blue. . .
You're not around.

If I could only hold your hand,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
And say I'm sorry, yes I am.
Chorus: Oh Mammy
I'm sure you really understand.
Chorus: Oh Mammy
Oh Ma. . .
Chorus: Blue. . .
Where are you now?

Chorus & Lead improv.:
Oh Mammy, Oh Mammy Mammy Blue, Oh Mammy Blue
Oh Mammy, Oh Mammy Mammy Blue, Oh Mammy Blue

The house we shared upon the hill,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
Seems lifeless but it's standing still,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
And memories of my childhood fill
Chorus: Oh Mammy
my mind,
Chorus: Blue. . .
Oh Mammy Mammy Mammy.

I've been through all the walks of life,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
Seen tired days and lonely nights,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
And now without you by my side,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
I'm lost.
Chorus: Blue. . .
How will I survive?

Chorus & Lead (mixed parts):
Oh Mammy, Oh Mammy Mammy Blue, Oh Mammy Blue
Oh Mammy, Oh Mammy Mammy Blue, Oh Mammy Blue
(Improv. at length off to a big finish)
(Pop Tops version ends more or less here)

(Cherry Laine version, which has been lyrically slightly different and misically more different, continues. . .)

Nobody takes care of me,
Who loves me, who has time for me.
The walls look silent at my face,
Oh Mammy.

The sky is dark, the wind is rough,
And now I know what I have lost,
The house is not a home at all.
Oh Mammy, I'm leaving the future.

Chorus:
Oh Mammy, Oh Mammy Mammy Blue, Oh Mammy Blue
Oh Mammy, Oh Mammy Mammy Blue, Oh Mammy Blue
(Fade Out Repeating)

Somehow I will do something with that.....!!! Make a movie or something. When I first heard it I didn't realize what it was all about.... but now that I know.. I like it even more...

Thanks both of you..!!

Ok... I"ve started a movie of Oh Mammy... not finished it by a long shot... but what do you think so far... Are we getting way off topic or what..?? Eeekkk...

What topic?

Wow. Hadn't realized you had a link to see what you're working on.

Very clever stuff the way you layered everything - the fog, swing and house and all.

You got the hazy memory thing happening nicely.

Awesome!

Hi, Celery.

Nice that you like it so much. It is good song and Kirka make it more energy work when can see it live.

I look your idea and that man....how i say....it must be stronger still, not look down like wet dog, wet dog time is back, and he comes home and look brave and courage to house, head up,
boy looks the home house and own memoryes and then start song and song come out bottom of soul or mind....and he cannot stop song.......after that he is empty

Good idea that yours idea.

Hummm..... I"m not quite sure what you are trying to say. What I tried to portray is the son coming home... and his mom not being there. He is sad and remembering the past. His head is down because he is mourning the loss of his past and his mother. I guess while he was gone him mom died or whatever..
Oh dear, maybe I didn't get the point across...

I've just added a bit more to it so don't know when you saw it last. I"m not quite finished it but just had to post it... :D

Don't like to interpret, but I think heikki is saying that when the son finally returns home it is in triumph. He has overcome much lonliness while away and accomplished much and he is looking forward to share that triumphant reuinon with his mother.

Then, his anticipation turns to the realization that she has passed away in his absence, and he suddenly experiences great longing and sorrow. And his lonliness, that he thought was the cost of his expatriate venture, a cost he thinks was paid in full, is suddenly revived worse than ever.

So the high of his triumph and anticipation is counterpointed by sudden bereavement and emptiness and regret. Huge emotional drop needs perhaps a before and after picture to show the change.

Regrding your choice of the male figure, he believes that it appears that the son is coming home beaten down like a dog. He's sad too early in the story. So he may want to suggest a transition from mature almost heroic homecoming to emptyness and pain.

It may need to show more of a timeline progression, I think is what he was getting at.

And I could very well be wrong about his intent.

Humm.... well, I'm just going off the words and it starts off like this..

I may be your forgotten son,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
Who wandered off at twenty-one.
Chorus: Oh Mammy
It's sad to find myself at home, ( SEE , HE'S SAD. He said it .. I didn't.. :o )
Chorus: Oh Mammy
And you. . .
Chorus: Blue. . .
You're not around. ( Nope... she's nowhere to be found )

If I could only hold your hand,
Chorus: Oh Mammy
And say I'm sorry, yes I am. ( Yada, yada yada...)

So as far as I could tell he was sad right from the get go.... and the lament at the first of the songs sounds like a mourning as well...thats why I have a guy hanging his head .. !

Now what his state of mind was on the flight home....or what victory he feels he's accomplished... .I"ll never know... but to me he walks into this story sad.....

Then he goes on to his memories of his childhood which I tried to portray.... Anyway... I don't see any happy parts here ... no victories.... only saddess. Such a soulfull sound. I just love it...

Now if the song had started something like this

Now I can hardly wait to meet you at the gate
And with you I'll share my travels everywhere....Oh Mammy :D

Ok, ok... you get the idea. At least he starts off sounding excited right..?? If that had been said I'd have portrayed him excited to be home... at first.

I guess bottom line is that we are all going to perceive this the way we want....and we could debate it till the cows came home... !!

Heikki... I"m sorry if I screwed up your song... but this is the way I see and hear it.

Well, there ya go,

My job as translator is finished. . . I think.

Anyway, it's your piece. You can do it how you like and I'll applaud your interpretation.

By the way, that was a pretty good intro lyric you wrote.

Got talent in that area too, I can see.

D Akey.... that lyric was a joke...LOLO.. But actually I do write songs. I was just being hokey with that though.

Well, one way or the other...I'm totally taken with that song.... go figure eh. I just can't believe it 's taken this long for me to even hear it. Makes me wonder what else I"m missing out there....!!!
Probably not much...
I'm just working on a couple more graphics to add to the end of the movie... and that will be it.. !! Whew.. maybe then I can get some rest.

Thx for being interpreter.... sorry to end your career so abruptly... !! The pay was lousy anyway eh...??

:)

Not screwed, it is ok.

I change many time old songs word-story when i song and then it is almost new song-story.

But that your movie, i mean DAkey describe it quite samek kind.

Boy think that his mind that he has solve that past-problem. He knows that born-home is empty and parents are gone. He comes to look that home, but when he round and look, suddenly that mind-lock open and he start to sing that song, it open her mind. And after that his mind is pure empty, and untill then he has solve the past and is ready to go forward on his life.

I put my favourite that your movie-address to look later.

You have nice web-pages.

CeleryHart, I watched it after your additional work on it. It's wonderful!

Thanks for sharing your work. You look like you really have put some energy into your animations. I enjoy the way you get so much additional implied movement out of limited movement. That fog especially makes it feel quite active.

:D :D :D

heikki... well, as long as my version of the song isn't too terribly wrong I"ll be okay with that. Glad you liked it.

Yes, Akey... the fog to me just sets the scene for melancholy. I tried to keep the file size down but it turned out bigger than I really wanted. I like the way it turned out too.....I especially like the kid and mom on a swing... and the gently motion to it. I had to do some fancy work on that one cause the originall picture was of a grandpa on the swing... thank God for cloning etc...LOL. Thats one way to get a man out of your life eh...??

Well, wonder what my next movie will be. I hear a song and bingo.... I have to make a movie out of it.. I need to be getting ready for more Christmas ones ....!!!

Thanks guys.. glad you enjoyed it..!!

Apologies to the originator... I think it must have been something we ate... !!! Or maybe it was the melancoly mood that song Oh Mammy put us in.

PS.. it won't let me upload this last pic.. suppose it's trying to tell me something..?? Hummmmm. Oh dear , file size was too big.. let me try again. Compression, compression.... that did it... LOL

Not insane. . . goofy.

So you're going for a more serious animation program, eh? Well, best of luck with it and report back how you like Moho.

Movement seems better than Flash 5. In the student demo, they were doing some moves that I did in Flash, but mine moved jerkily. 'Course, their display was postage stamp sized.

But Moho looks like it has lots of potential for someone with your level of energy.

Have fun with it!

Celeryhart

At the moment my energy level is nil... !! There are so many animation programs out there that it makes your head spin. Choosing the right one has been exhausting...lol..
But for now Moho is it... so I"ll have to make the best of it. I like the way it uses "bones" for movement. Can I learn it..?? Thats the next question.

Guess I"ll find out soon enough. Don't think I"ll be posting my progress on this forum though...Art Rage is going to be set aside for the time being.
But I"ll be checking back from time to time.. so have fun you guys...!!
