View Full Version : Learning Artrage with Speed Paints

Hello I'm Carl and new to the forums. Here are a bunch of speed paints I did using the starter edition. These range from 10 mins - 30 mins and the ones with writing took a little longer because lettering takes time! All my paintings are created willy nilly without a plan, I just start drawing lines or laying paint and let them evolve from that. Anyway I love this program and bought the full version today so will be doing some new stuff soon.

The main reason I like Artrage is for the color mixing of paints. I am partially color blind and it's difficult for me to understand color and what goes with what and being able to lay colors next to each other and mix them really helps. I think it'll show in my work since the greyscale images tend to be better then color.

Anyway I come from the world of 3d modeling/design and am teaching myself traditional art since that's how I learn best. I hope you like my work and I hope to do a bunch more!

Also these are all sized to fit on my iPhone and I'm doing multiple post to reach my 10 post to post images limit.

I am also learning myself poetry for the heck of it. These 3 go in order. First one was a 10 min painting then I made a poem inspired by it quickly even though it's not very good it shows my learning process. The second one I made the painting first and it inspired the poem but I'm not a fan of the composition. Finally the third one I spent about 45 mins on (my longest painting yet!) and I wanted to do something colorful and make a peom about my color blindness. Fun stuff!

Hi Carl and welcome to here. In my opinion ... your first 10 offerings are gallery ready. Simply wonderful. You might want to check your spelling though on your art poems. Your approach is what I personally call Jungian. Carl Jung used to have his patients paint as part of their therapy. The strength of speed painting is that the concious brain gets pushed aside and that seems to be working for you.

Wow Carl, welcome! What an way to enter in! That first set of speed paints is AWESOME! I know you are going to be great with layers... you have it down already! :)

These are wonderful.....i think the last one is amazing.:D
I started doing 3d stuff using 3dmax mostly and i realised i needed to do drawings and sketches for designs........2d stuff, but i've stuck to 2d stuff learning about different things about 2d art........i may if i have the time go back to paly with 3d :D

Welcome, these are fantastic, my favourite is the first but they are all good, well done:)

Wow thanks all for the compliments!

RobertSWade: I'll have to look that Carl Jung guy up...with a name like Carl he can't be that bad! As for the spelling....I'm going to be making a lot of spelling errors in my time...people will have to just accept them =)

Irishrose: Layers will open up many new doors. And color pallets and more tool options.....my mind goes crazy just thinking about the possibilities!

Krondelo: Flowers are mother natures art...hard not to like them and they're pretty easy. Plus women love flowers and these won't die like the real ones.

Enchanter: Ya I'm struggling to get back to doing some 3d art work now but with what I'm learning in 2d is fun and new and I can imagine it'll only improve my 3dsmax work.

Rain11: Thanks again!

Alright!!!!!! Sweet. I love the slap dashery of it all in that it still holds the image pretty well. It's like a hot dogger on a motorcycle jump.

Very cool!

made this one tonight because I felt inspired and intoxicated. Actually had came up with the poem first so I went greyscale so I could make an image that matched the poem in my head if that makes sense.

Thanks again for all the kind words! I really like how many different people like different paintings.

Lee: Thanks for the compliments on the poetry! Poetry is tough but I'm going to keep at it.

Nika: I don't think I'll ever tire of flowers...some day I'll actually learn about them instead of make them up as I feel.

Caesar: Speed painting is tough and it's fun to get slap happy with the brushes and knifes.

xHaStex: Thanks....I'm slowly learning all the new tools the full version has to offer.....lots of possibilites.

Rowena: Glad you like....Artrage does make yummy paintings. I need to do some chocolate inspired soon I think. And a "no licking monitor sticker" too I bet.

gzairborne: I love creativity....it solves problems.

kayapee: Glad you liked them!

Cool....I had to make this post so I can finally have 10 and post my next set of images!

Here is some art I submitted for a local competition to make bike racks! I haven't done a 3d art project in some time but since I recently decided I need to take my art seriously I decided to give this competition a go!

I modeled/rendered in 3dsmax 7, speed painted (20 mins each) the backgrounds in Art Rage and then combined everything in Photoshop. I hope you like!

I love how you have employed what ArtRage does to your technical ideas. Great combination. Gives it the feel of a personal vision, and it humanizes the product or design or whatever.

Really great.

You definitely have graphic design talent. Was cool to see the use of backgrounds made in artrage. They really complemented your 3 D work.
You did an amazing job on the layout and montages. These are just gorgeous illustrations. Fantastic stuff. Great idea. :)

Dear Carls, Wow, you certainly are talented!!! great drawings and great ideas, love the colored flowers bike rack, but my favorite is the bike bench, wonderful idea!!! good luck in the competition!!!!!!!!!! have a feeling you will win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Wow, that is some seriously cool design - you are clearly in another dimension of experience...

Just for clarification: is the background only the AR part? And what other programs went into the making of this extraordinary design?

Carls

Thanks all for the responses!

DaveRage: Thanks...I am constantly trying to learn new programs....it makes it easier to learn new programs :D

LogicsHere: Glad you liked them! Only the painted backgrounds were quick..the designing, modeling and rendering of the designs took a couple days.

D Akey: Thanks! I actually do technical drawings for a living since I gave up trying to be a designer (long story). Now I'm an artist and get to do what I want how I want when I want.....fun!

Lee: Thanks Lee I hope I win and will know July 27th.

Rowena: Thanks! I've been doing graphic work for 10 years now....I've learned some tricks during that time. I used 3dsmax 7 and photoshop along with artrage.

And here are some more speed paints and I tried to use tools I haven't yet.

Another color study using paint roller and glitter and knife 20mins

Couple more quickies here to help pass some time at work. Still playing with various tools. I've tried doing some pencil tool drawings but the way I draw with a pencil all scribles like takes too much time.

Layers, glitter and knife tool...25mins or so
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f285/cenorjay/072408_01.jpg

Glitter and Knife only....sort of evolved into a sunset on water but I'm sure my colors aren't right...it's an alien world that's it. 20mins

Hi, first of all: Congratulations for winning with the bike rings! They are really cool, though I personally thought the bench was best- I always like multiple useful solutions :)
and your paintings are really great- especially the ones with the poems were so touching to me. Wonderful, I am looking forward to seeing more of it!

Hey again thanks all for the compliments! Such a fun community here!

icebox23: you nailed it...this IS a fun place to be ;)

D Akey: Thanks man! It means a lot.

Lee: Thanks! I love functional art and hope to make a lot more!

silvercat: Hehe the bench was my favorite too because I've been making some furniture lately and it would have been really cool to get that one made! Glad you enjoyed the poems as well! I'll see about making more....maybe today since it's slow.

LogicsHere: Thanks! I am trying to get away from greyscale because there is already enough grey here in Seattle! On that note.....

Here is an not so speed painting that I did to play around with AR's layers and blending modes. First I made a quick model in 3dsmax and imported it as a layer. Then I painted everything in greyscale. Then I used layers and the color/overlay/multiply blend modes and airbrush tool to apply color.

Greyscale version....I already thought it too busy but this was a learning excercise
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f285/cenorjay/072508_03b.jpg

I used a stencil to mask off the 3d model layer to color it but it didn't get a great outline which is why it's got whitish edges.

So it's been a while. Went on a couple of road trips and vacations to enjoy the weather since I got laid off at the beginning of August. Trying to get back into things now and here's a few more paints I've done! I'll try to do more painting since I have all this free time on my hands till I find another job. Hope you like them!

Your paintings are extraordinary, very well done, and I admire the gray tonalities that you have achieved in many of them. Also, the tones of colors are fantastic!
You have a very proper and personal style. Your topics look like to me, (seem), dream images.:D:o:)

Been a long time since I been on Artrage but still use the program often when I'm feeling inspired. Also still love to mix the colors and work on various techniques before trying them for real. Here's some in no particular order hope you like!
