Hi everyone, wonderful paintings and drawings! Mine doesnt really fit the "attitude" criteria, but i didnt think you would mind

Greetings W1cK3d,

As long as it's "food" we graciously accept it. You may have also noticed
that food is also "open to interpretation" in this thread. In other words
we will honor almost ANYTHING! LOL!

Your "Grapes" painting is just lovely, so soft and delicate. It reminds me
of a beautiful watercolor. The palette is subtle and light, very appealing.
Thank you for submitting this creative work of art and please don't be a
stranger. We will be waiting in anticipation for your upcoming entry.
Again, welcome aboard. :)

several days, just consider us temporally unavailable. :o

I dunno what this olive is meaning with such an attitude, but that's what You get from Spain. I wouldn't anticipate what happens with the Italian ones, especially the ones from Apulia (they're seriously outstanding), the birth place of Rodolfo Valentino! :D
In any case You may add this to Julie Diane triplet dating company I guess, although they don't seem to be mere food in everybody's interpretation. LOL

Dear Caesar,
That Spanish olive with an attitude was actually meticulously hand carved
out by my daughter with a sharp knife then a photo was taken of the little
morsel. We laughed and laughed at the sight of it. I just added the
appropriate hat for added effect. As to not insult "our" Italian heritage I am
happy to say that black olives are my favorite, love them. Oh the glory of
black olives on pizza, in salads, etc.. If left alone I could devour an entire jar
of them. :)

Dear Kindly D Akey,
OMG, OMG, OMG and WHOOHOO!
I have finally found the stuffed (or "full of it!") olive, err, man I love!
Sooooo perfectly matched we are, floating in a Martini sea of love and
pickled, fermented bliss. Me thinks, though that my yummy tid bit of
affection may have swallowed just a touch too much of the contents
of our "sea of love", romantic environment for he seems to have lost
contol of his exceptionally muscular tongue. ROTFL!!!

Your entry is wonderfully and whimsically created, D Akey. As previously
mentioned, someone should bottle your humor for it would be a best
seller. Thank you for the great image. Still laughing, laughing, laughing,
eh? and phew ! ;) :p :)

No insult, dear Mair, but as an information, we do have any type of olives of any size or vines, including black olives and also "the wrinkled" ones ... and I'm not making any malicious implication with what i say! LOL
Probably we don't leave enough of them to export and certainly US rules for importing or carrying food are quite obsolete as a minimum.
After all everything with olives possibly started on the Eastern Mediterranean countries (Greece etc.) to then find since long time ago in Hesperia (the ancient name of Italy) and its different places climates, a place to spread in all its variety when Spain was still under Chartago domination! :D

And you really should bottle the humor, it is awesome! This has been the funniest thread ever, so glad you're here Mair (except for all the money I have to put on for Depends!) ROFL!!!!

my favorite song. Shall I clear my throat and sing you a few lines ?
Ahem, ahem, ahem . . . here goes . . . .

Some day my prince will come
Some day we'll meet again
And away to his castle we'll go
To be happy forever I know

Some day when spring is here
We'll find our love anew
And the birds will sing
And wedding bells will ring
Some day when my dreams come true

Sniff, would someone please pass the box of Kleenex? I am overcome! :p

This thread stays one of the most interesting in the whole forum :) I even hesitate if I should break the current discussion with a new painting..as it is not about olives or about love... but indeed, it has something to do with music! (By the way- Mairzie Dotes,is there a link to some page where you can listen to that song? I could not make out the melody.. or please can you sing it again? ;) )
So, here's my painting..can you recognize it?

You are so kind to say such nice things about this thread. The positive review
is due to the valued input of wonderful Art Rage members such as you and our
friends. Please do not feel that you should not consider submitting ANYTHING
in this thread. We love variety and welcome all entry's.

Your painting is just wonderful! Agreed, the theme is not "olives" :) but it IS
about music, celebration, love and creativity. Love the texture and the
birthday cake guitar's design is striking. Thanks for submitting it. Just lovely!:)

silvercat,
I think you may be referring to the song that I used in this thread titled,
"Someday My Prince Will Come" The song comes from a vintage
Disney animated movie, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". The full
song lyrics are . . . .

Someday My Prince Will Come

Someday my prince will come
Someday I'll find my love
And how thrilling
That moment will be
When the prince
Of my dreams comes to me
He'll whisper I love you
And steal a kiss or two
Though he's far away
I'll find my love someday
Someday
When my dreams come true

Someday I'll find my love
Someone to call my own
And I know
At the moment we meet
Or my heart will start
Skipping the beats
Someday we'll say and do
Things we've been longing to
Though she's far away
I'll find my love someday
Someday
When my dreams come true

Someday my prince will come
Someday we'll meet again
And away
To his castle we'll go
To be happy forever I know
Someday when spring is here
We'll find our love anew
And the birds will sing
And wedding bells will ring
Someday
When my dreams come true

I'm a poet too!!! Listen to this riddle and look to the solution!

FOOD WITH ATTITUDE

I'm much wrinkled, but not old,
I'm addressing any guy,
here I am 'cause I was told
that someone should have a try.
When I'm in (outside it's cold),
I don't feel anymore dry.
You'll appreciate any fold
they can take You to the sky.
Just to finish, I am bold
now guess You who th'hell am I!!

OK, let's stop poetry for a while and put some more food!
Actually the idea was to merge in a product an Italian and a Japanese delight! Moreover it's plug & play with any operational system. :D
Hard to import it in US with present rules without putting it in a diplomatic luggage. I hope this looks tasty too to You, notwithstanding the fact that it did not make recourse to plastic surgery for lifting! LOL

(* In the United States, in order to be certified, plumbers and certain poets demonstrate requisite skill in wearing their pantaloons low. Thus the term 'plumber's cleavage'. Most poets are given no such credit, presumably because they have a laughably weak union.)

Thanks Marianna for the gorgeous attire! LOL
Thanks to Your works I'm now second only to Mrs. Sarah Palin as for picture retouches!
By the way ... did You guess right and fast my above riddle?

D Akey
09-13-2008, 06:03 AM
Dear Caesar,
Something is surely popping out, not out of your feminine side but
out of your mouth that is . . . . .
A cluster of Italian black olives!!! :p (and not the wrinkled kind!!!)

Well I'll be a son of a shiek!

It's that dove, Caesar, in peaceful aspect, bearing an olive branch! Somewhere, over the rainbow. . .

Caesar
09-13-2008, 06:08 AM
Dear D Akey,
thanks for the extensive explanation!
I think I understand I'd better pay a visit to ladies in need as a plumber instead than as a poet, for sure in US!

Great pic Mair!!! How innocent he looks. ha!

And Caesar, yes, got the Japanese Plug n Play wrinkled black olive joke! :)

Is there more to it?

DA.. all I can say is BRILLIANT! Love the cleavage remark too! ;) Seen too many plumbers or 'plumbers in training' in the making! OY!

LOL

Dear Caesar,
Congratulations on your "impressive" poem. The rhythmic delivery is
both uplifting and a manly presentation of significant proportions.
If I were to take a wild guess on what/who this illusive "food" that
your prose hints to might be, might I be so adventurous to say that
the object could possibly be a ripe Zucchini??? :p ;) :D

Your happy Wrinkled Olive painting is HILARIOUS! Your artistry matched
with humor is UNBOUNDED, dear friend. Love the perky smile on his face
that much reminds me of the perky smile on your face while wearing your
alluring sheik's attire. Very becoming and whoohoo ! :o :D ;)

LOL Caesar,

No no no, you don't understand. The feminine side is the emotional side, we have both male and female inside of us. You just happened to touch on the emotional 'feminine' side. Nothing popping out , rest assured!
Yes, Laughing is GOOD, doing it now! LMBO!

Dear irishrose,
Popped out? Something popped out on dear Caesar? Did D Akey's
pressure cooker pop a gasket? Nothing popped out? A little something
popped out? Things are popping out all over? (isn't that a song?)

No lie, I have been laughing myself sick since yesterday! ROTFL!!! Have
mercy, I need intervention! LOL LOL LOL!!! :D :D :D

Same kind of concept actually! :) Only more fun! My dad was not a plumber, but he had the tools ;)

And Mair, those are such awesome comments!

Icebox, great image... wonderful stuff you can get from science.

Hi gzairborne,
It's always nice when you stop by and thank you for the positive feed
back on, "Pickled Egg Dream." Nirvana does not apply to this particular
painting because when one's dream bowl of pickled eggs levitates and

wanting to stay on the dining room table where they belong. ;) :D :)

'Tis a sad shame because I hope you aren't too awfully attached to your
mutant alien pig because Robert has a great, mouth watering, low acid
BBQ sauce recipe for pork ... D Akey is still attempting to master the joy's
of pressure cooking and last we heard he has graduated in ways to
prepare and ruin bacon ... dear Caesar has an uncontrollable and manly
appetite for flesh of all kinds (sigh!) ... am wondering if irishrose still
prepares her favorite dish ... corned pork and cabbage ... and I will eat
ANYTHING except Turnips! In other words ... this mutant pig from beyond
the bounds of earth should quickly board the next space ship outta here if
he knows what's good for his tender (yum!) pork belly self. :D :D

OOOOO you two are perceptive indeed. When I first drew him, I was in the yard by my shady trees in another fairy tale mood....and then Mr. Carrot appeared. Also I wrote a poem to go with him, and my daughter told me it was too scary. I will write it anyway since we all are getting into the Halloween thing now. If you choose to remove him, it would not hurt my feelings, as I feel like you.....he is a little on the creepy darkish side.
Here 'tis:
Heed my warning and prevent great mourning.
Don't nibble on my head, or you will wind up in bed.
With dreams of tomorrows that will never be,
And wake in years gone by with wrinkles and tears in your eye
For the yesterday's lost-this is my cost!

weeun,
I feel moved to do what I can to bring a smile to this cute Apple's frown
and am wondering why it is so distressed? Could that symbol at the top
right of the canvas indicate a "cross roads" of sorts? Could this adorably
upset Apple who is tugging at my heart strings be experiencing a change
in it's life? Here's hoping that this pectin sweet pal hasn't crossed paths
with a ...Waring juicer for cripey sake! ;) Sadly sweet, well executed

Am I ever glad that you inquired because I have been also wondering.
I vaguely recall that there is a dance called the "Hokey Pocky" or was
it the "Jerky Pocky?" And what about "Pocky Dots?" I do have a
Pocky Dot blouse and ... isn't there a song ... "Pocky Mountain High?"
and ... NOT TO MENTION ... "Pocky Chops!"

Thank'y kindly, Ms Country Dotes! :D

Didn't you share one time about your having wild turkeys (not to mention Jack Daniels) wandering around your neighborhood. . . unsupervised?

Makes me fearful and want to protect them like my black cats on Halloween. Can't be all that Southern Comforting for them to know that flying South for the winter, to places where Thanksgiving is not celebrated like in the Bahamas, is nigh on impossible for them. Can they even fly without a ticket?

Anyway, most appetizing picture. . . for the holiday edition of Pilgrim's Process Magazine. I accept. THANKSGIVING PARTY AT MAIRZIE's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

History all to often does not present accurate accounts of significant occurrences. :(

Most have accepted the skewed account that the three ships that sailed to the
new world were the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria but sad to say this unfounded
rumor was perpetuated by the Druids after their architectural boondoggle, Stonehenge
caved in which left the builders embarrassed before their piers and were banished to
a yet undisclosed island, sadly spending the rest of their remaining years telling lies.

The sea worthy vessels that braved unsettled waters and brought the pilgrims to America
were named after the REAL voyager adventurers, an Italian Captain, his scullery maid,
cook and devoted admirer, who when not being chased around from stem to stern by idle
ship mates with run amuck notions, invented a savory dough pie and spicy sausage roll
which became the Captain's favorite meal and can still be enjoyed even today by the
slice or whole.

We are now most proud to announce the true names of these three notable ships of
passage that landed on Plymouth Rock by mistake because one of the ships mates
tossed the sextant overboard thinking it might allow him more private time at sea with
the scullery maid ... ( He got veeery dizzy running around the poop deck and fell
overboard while attempting to catch her! ) ... and they are ...

"The Caesar, the Pizza and the Maria Anna" and ... now you know the REST of the story. :)

Thank You very much, dearest Mary Ann for this historical lecture!! ;):p:DLOL

Although this picture confirms the fact that I cannot decently wear a hat since centuries (looking to my foregrandfather), I must confess that this ancestor on mine looks anyway great and elegant with such a black suit and the white socks and neck and wrist accessories.
I'm sort of doubtful, though, that he was always a perfectly pious and morigerate pilgrim fathers though, but I believe he was a quite demonstrative guy, with the natives too and especially with their damsels longing for poetries and portraits.
I'm also pleased to notice that the familiar tradition to never let a sausage shortage occur, thanks to the special creative cornucopia, existed since very long time in my race.
I would guess the Captain preferred, for some empathic reason, the sausage roller in the unsliced version recipe and I only wonder whether the maid had a different choice, since she was reported to be continuously escaping the chase according to the reported story.

Dear D Akey, it's our turn (Italy and Europe) now to have large immigration waves and I can assure they're of the kind of an harder and longer management for integration, since, after all, Italians tend to become mostly and soon not strangers all over they expatriate as soon as they have the opportunity (in civilized places at least).
Our very last wave of immigrants was able to apparently take out of crisis the Chrysler, that previous waves highly contributed to develop and make successful (two cousins of my mother for instance).;):p
All this was anyway more than due in my view, since it was both mutually convenient but also our American friends and brothers did not leave Europe, and Italy, under the terrible dictatorships only a few decades ago, so they deserve my and our loyalty too ...;):)

Dear Caesar,
I would venture that in this particular Pilgrim play, the maid is veeeery
choosey about her mates and she would only bake a pizza pie for the
one who holds the bountiful cornucopia of plentiful ingredients. Plain
cheese pizza's are never as zesty and fresh fruited fruit from the plains
for dessert ... a feast fit for any pioneer! :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that add have an overall brown look to everything? Smoked turkey was it back in the day?

I bought an old set of Jack Benny TV shows - 39 episodes for 5 dollars. (funny for the people who put the package together because 39 was the age he never admitted to being older than, plus he was cheap, so it worked, heh)
But watching the shows was almost like watching all the stars plugging smoking for a half hour, even when they weren't doing anything with smokes directly.

Anyway, as amusing as the shows were/are, their sponsor was Lucky Strike cigarettes. And they were so integrated with the shows that if you cut that content out, you cut the show itself. Their show characters did the commercial bits in the context of the show, humor and all. And their gags used smoke as often as possible it seemed.

They got away with this on radio because those were who they had in the studio to deliver the message. It would be as if you would be watching an episode of The Lone Ranger and he would ask Tonto for a cigarette, and that the crooks were making off with cartons of Lucky Strike cigarettes, and that the posse were all smoking, and the Indians were blowing smoke rings to talk. And don't get me started on the medicine show. These shows WERE the medicine show. And BAD MEDICINE at that.

So the upshot of that is that I bought 39 episodes, with Lucky Strike being mentioned at the front and back, and a couple times by some smart executive looking salesman who sounded all scientific. . . oh, and there was one time they had a close up on a beautiful woman from about the shoulders taking a deep hit off the smoke and letting it out in a slow, long exhale, like it was the most sensuous glide one could imagine, and she looked into the camera and smiled oh so contentedly. I just about fell out of my chair. Sheeeeeesh and double sheeeeeesh.

Be Happy-
Go Lucky
Lucky tastes better

Oh those slathering sexual slogans!

Heck, I remember various cigarette companies used professional athletes, and they claimed it was actually GOOD for your wind.

How many years did I smoke? Geez. . . 30? Tracking it back, it's not much of a surprise how I took it up. And quitting was like turning my back on a lot of deep deep imprints.

And 'you can take Salem out of the country BUT, you can't take the country out of Salem'. Their songs were always fun and catchy too, until you see an xray of your lungs after smoking for 20 years! Sick!

Could not BELIEVE that ad when I came across it ... the message is ...

fairly well. Thank goodness I don't DRINK but must confess ... with the
cut back in cigarettes I seem to be swilling down an overabundance of

D Akey,
Most everyone I knew while growing up smoked. My parents, relatives,
friends and neighbors all embibed. Many T.V. and radio commercials
regularly advertised the many cigarette brands and when settling in
to watch a good theatre movie ... all of the stars were blowing smoke
rings at each other with each pursed lip puff. He would move seductively
close and slowly (sigh!) light her cigarette ... so inticing the image was
and who wouldn't want to go on a date like that we thought? Possibly
my girl friends and I secretly hoped by having cigarettes dangling out of
our mouths ... Cary Grant might ask us out for dinner and cocktails .....
soooooo I may as well give up the bad habit because Mr. Grant was not
able to make it in to Pennsylvania after all. :(

Here I am settling down for a nice snack with my tooth faerie. That's me behind the camera. I found this one or a relative of this one under my pillow. Pic is a few years old so I can't recall exactly. Even the tooth faeries were outsourcing all the work.

Cute little rascal, though. A strange bedfellow. But what attitude!

The only thing I did to this photo was blur the area around my pal to make it corny like an Anne Giddes cherub or something. The attitude was discovered upon enlarging the shot.

D Akey
11-30-2009, 02:57 PM
He is not a rat, but a baby possum gainfully employed as a tooth faerie, madam. That's merely his day job. He aspires to be a cat someday and is working on a script which he hopes to sell to Hollywood. Same old story. . . pitiful really.

D Akey
11-30-2009, 06:09 PM
Because he knew the cats were allowed in the bed. . . but he wasn't sure about himself, so to be safe, it was under the pillow shivering with fear.

Used to keep the door open so the cats could wander in and out. Knowing my cats, they were bragging about the sweet deal they got INSIDE the house. . . nya nya nanny goat. . . etc.

One thing led to another and the doors shut. The possum went into a coffee can and set outside. . . where he shook in place literally for hours. This was an attempt to unfrazzle the lad's psyche and bolster his confidence that there was in fact a place in the yard for him. . . REPEAT. . . IN THE YARD. . . and thus all was right with the cats.

There was one suspicious incident though. . . one of my cats was caught bringing in a live baby rat into the house. So he may have done it so show a need for himself -- a sort of seeding the cat job market, much like gas stations will sprinkle roads with nails, or exterminators will spread bugs into someone's home.

Seems like we're right back where we started with "Bite her in the thigh".

Snatch her in the rye,

Reach for the sky,
No matter how you try
In the bye and bye
That dog is gonna get ya.

Today's Special ~

How much is that pit bull dog in the window
The one with the snaggle toothed glare
I'm afraid of that pithy bull in the window
Cause he thinks my thighs are choice filet fare

If he'd break outta that rickety see through window
He'd drag me by the hair to his laire
Stay strong oh trusty plexiglass window
Or the juicy main course would be poor Mair

Run away from that ornery fur ball in the window
And instead choose a cuddly kitty to buy
You can't trust that hungry ol' hound in the window
For his eyes see you only as a ham on rye

Oh my Gosh, go away for a while, and this is what happens? You all are a HOOTTTTT! This made me almost split my dissolving stitches!

You forgot to add the Pants on the Ground song, that would have made it complete :)

FUNNY STUFF!!!! I hope I can add later to it!

Dear IrishRose,
Whoohoo, our Emerald Isle friend is back ... how have you been and
here's hoping your splitting stitches are only of the laughing kind.

Am happy to know that you are enjoying the recents posts ... what fun!

Was trying out the new, Art Rage Studio Pro canvas choices on my
"Devil's Food Cake" entry and think I added a bit too much grain.

I used a photo of my home made Devil's Food cake and painted cake's
"personality" ... horns, tail and tongue in our new paint program. Below
is the original photo that I used ... it's my son's favorite dessert that he
insists that I bake for him when he visits. Gee, now why did I have to
to mention good things to eat when I am starving and this cup of
morning tea is NOT very satisfying and ... if I could only eat that photo
right now! :D

Thanks for stopping by with a smile! x/o :)

Ah Maire:

Ten cents is that pit bull in the window,
The one with the snaggle toothed glare
That's all that he's worth once he's bit you,
and swallowed all but your hair.

So maybe first you should roast HIM,
Before you are dragged to his laire,
Devour him first - think "how scrumptious",
And you'll be one satisfied Maire.

D Akey,
Respectfully speaking ...there issss a difference between a cake and a pie....
example: When the moon hits your eye like a bigga ... the lyrics don't read
pizza "CAKE" and ... if one drinks waaaay too much, they aren't referred
to as "CAKE" eyed ... but I girlishly digress! :o

Your lavishly decorated cake is ... WITHOUT EXCEPTION ... one of a kind
and I hope you won't let it out in the rain for ...I don't think I could take
it for you took so long to make it and you may never have those imported
sardines agaaaain ... (unless you have a good rapore with dear Caesar)
and ... do you happen to live in MacArthur Park?

A gracious thank you for your creative entry and must say that I have
been inspired by your "interesting" decorating abilities and wrote a little
poem to accompany a personal, final touch to the cake that you might
enjoy. Hope you like it. :)

Now there's a winning pepperoni with an attitude! Bet it would sell.

I guess this settles the age old connundrum that we can have our cake and pepperoni too, along with sardines and a full compliment of the "whatever works".

Ma shoo. . . everybody sing:

When you get hit in the eye,
with a cake or a pie,
Abundanza! A-bundanza!

When your cake make-a you drool,
Just-a like chocolate fazool,
Want some more, eh? What's the score, eh?

Forks will clack,
ticky toey tac,
tacky gooey yack,

Add portabella,
Good hot sell-a,

Dear Maire:

That pit bull is sweet and most tender,
His ribs on the grill and combined,
With pit-bull parfait from the blender
Will drive you right out of your mind.

So don't be fooled by the gristle.
It's a lie in hopes that you'll not,
Give that old boy a whistle,
And lure him right into your pot.

With marinate don't even linger,
He's way too tender for that.
Just pick up a piece with your finger
You've dipped in hot pit-bull fat.

A rapture from Heaven will greet you
With every new morsel you try,
And when your meal is complete, too
You'll rise up into the sky.

You'll feel so light and so bouncy,
Though your tummy is giddily full,
And everywhere people will come see
The Maire that ate the pit-bull.

OMgosh, this is sooo funny! Mair, thanks for the comment and glad to be here.. I KNEW that the pepperoni was going to get in there somehow... but the anchovies or whatever they are.. UGH! All because you made a scrumptious cake for your son.. how does it get to this?

The best poetry ever from all of you. I can't compete. ;) Woo hooo... this thread still rocks the boat!

Dear IrishRose,
I could have sworn those embellishments that chef D Akey so creatively
decorated the cake with were sweet gum drops instead of pepperoni
slices ... his thought being that the sugary treats would offset the
pungent WOWness of the silvery skinned, bone in, olive oil marinated
sardines, a striking and unique (rumble!) flavor enhancement when blended
with the rich, decadent flavor of devil's food cake. By the way ... would
you happen to (uuuuUUURP!) have some bromo? ;) :D :D :D :)

Mairzie, Lee & D'Akey,

Awoke to find my soul divine
Was captured in a Valentine
Superbly by Ms. Mairzie Dotes
In pink and hearts my image floats
Inspired thoughts from sweetest Lee,
And rounded out by D'Akey,
All sparked in me the thought sublime,
Will you each be my Valentine? :)

But as for Caesar, sad but true,
He'll steal your hearts and make you blue,
So watch your hearts when he's around,
He's such a dear but such a hound.
But still we can't neglect his gaze,
So here I'll offer him some praise,
A handsome devil is divine,
Attested by the gals in line,
Hearts await all to be broken
For his love that's just a token.
Some advice, beware his teaser,
And his aims to grab and squeeze her.

And so to close, to the and thine,
I hope you'll be my Valentine.

Rosey knows to where she flys,
Who's loving arms is there she lies,
Though Caesar's charms are hard to pass,
The Duke of Byron wins the lass,

The Rose is sweet on Byron's words
He spreads the sugar sweet in hoards,
Who could resist that every day?
And the Roman's very far away,

Would contintents colide, the east and west,
And romance overtakes the loved one's nest,
The war of Rose would stand the course,
And ride away on tandem horse,

Her love-knight winning maid and lands
Forever hearts and forever hands,
Off to the sunset Valentines Pair,
The story's of old and beautious fair.
:):o;):rolleyes::)

byroncallas
02-12-2010, 08:00 PM
And so to Lee who sees the scheme,
And lays to rest the Roman's dream,
A thankful word is here addressed
For having very well assessed
The dangers that are in the air,
That could disrupt and bring despair,
But rest assured that all is well,
No potions, charms or scheming spell,
Can break the bonds of love so true,
In Rome, or Second Avenue
Or on the moon or even Mars
In galaxies of distant stars,
For schemes can never break apart,
The love that binds two heart to heart.
When love is real it's near divine
Eternal is the Valentine.
And should you proffer "This is sap"
And hold your nose and call it "pap"
And think that I have taken leave,
Of all my senses on this eve,
Of lovers' day around the bend,
When lovers love and see no end,
I'll stake my claim, declare my wife
Brings joy each day into my life.
So grab your Valentine and kiss,
Don't pass the chance, don't miss the bliss,
And when the lovers' day is done
Commit before the setting sun
To love not just one day a year
But every day your one so dear -
To love each moment, feed the fire
That keeps alive the Heart's desire.

PS: SCP, nice cake. :D

I still to have to learn which one of the two saints with that name we have here, who was probably responsible for originally exporting this kind of feast, that turned as lovers one in the English speaking world, and we eventually got back, again celebrating it more paganly and for clear commercial purposes, alas.:(

Anyway, if I may thank You and contribute to the Valentine spirit using (and abusing) part of a greatest ancient Roman poet Catullus lyrics (most of them were dedicated to his beloved Lesbia, not a much successful love affair for him thiough), here it is:

Vivamus, mea Lesbia, atque amemus,
rumoresque senum severiorum
omnes unius aestimemus assis.
Soles occidere et redire possunt,
nos, cum semel occidit brevis lux,
nox est perpetua una dormienda.
Da mi basia mille, dein centum,
dein altera milia, dein secunda centum
.....

TRANSL.
Let's live, my Lesbia, and let's love,
and grumblings of the most severe old people
let's evaluate them all one assis. (the Roman coin worth the least)
Suns can set and come back again,
us, when once our short light sets ,
we have to sleep one neverending night.
Give me one thousand kisses, then one hundred,
then one more thousand, then a second hundred
...

I spared You the rest since classical Latin sounds sweet and solemn, but I cannot torture You with such an apparently unfamiliar language (the truth is that Latin is actually spread all over English too, as You may possibly realize hereabove too ...)

I made a little research too, dear Lee!
Apparently the correct one (patron of lovers) is the San Valentino born in Terni 176 a.C. and dead in Rome 269 a.C.
He was a bishop and martyr, venerated by catholics, orthodoxes and anglicans.
He's buried in Terni's cathedral, but relics of him are in some other churches too (the skull in Your picture is actually thought to be his).
The church in Rome is near to the one we got married in and has got also, outside, the Bocca della Verità, The Truth Mouth, where Your hand is supposed to be chopped if Your saying a lie.

The reason for that patronage is due two a couple of episodes, among others, in his life:
he made two disputing young fiancés get reconciled by giving them a rose and then having pidgeons couples exchanging sweet effusions fly around them. That's why we use to tenderly define lovers in Italy as "piccioncini", i.e. "little pidgeons".
He married a moribund christian maid Serapia to a centurion Sabino she loved, notwithstanding her parents were contrary, after baptizing him.
They then fell aslept.I attach also a picture of his grave herebelow and of his skull again.

Caesar - wonderful photos and background. I visited his tomb when I was visiting in Italy many years ago. Terrific post. :) And thanks for the positive nod on the waxings. :):):)

And the poem by Roman poet Catullus - it looks like the type that makes me wish I could read and understand Latin. It reminds me that we share much with the ancients however different the circumstances of our times. :):):)

Dear Lee, they aren't mine (although they look quite natural, no filters or particular enhancements). This morning, incredibly, we had considerable snow in Rome, but soon melted almost totally by the afternoon, so I wouldn't either go and take a picture in that church, close to the Fora and Marcellus' Theatre on even to Terni (not far away from Rome, but certainly with much more snow).:D

Dear Byron, thanks.
You're right! So much of what we are didn't change through the centuries, quite a number of lessons are still valid and lots of Latin (and ancient Greek) words and roots survive in the aethimology of European languages.
Sometimes it was fun to ear of some new concepts and phylosophy, for istance some recent modern warfare doctrines, just to realize that a certain brand new idea someone sells was not at all that new, sometimes existed and was expressed in ancient Roman times. Actually, as Luttwark discovered, there weregood political and military skills and reasons explaining why an Empire as big as that of ancient Romans, with a boundary terrificly huge (with the Mediterranean Sea in the middle too), could expand and be then controlled by only about 16 legions (plus local auxiliary troops). Just consider that a legion is only 3000 soldiers!

Dear Caesar: we're most agreed. One needs only read the Iliad and The Odyssey to see that the psychology of human beings remains unchanged over the millenniums. The channeling of energies may have changed (a little, we don't behead the loser at our sports events) but the energies themselves run as constant as electricity in lightning bolts from biblical times to yesterday's thunder.

D'Akey: I thought the Goths were from England starting about 1980. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goth_subculture
But then, I easily get my mid-evil history discombobulated during confabulation.

Discombobulated during confabulation? Indeed. I remember my first love too. . . <old pang sigh> I was often discombobulated, and occasionally there was confabulation when she was willing. We were so very young you see. And you know what they say: 'Tis better to discombobulate than never. . .if memory serves. . .what were we talking about again?

Ah, the Goths. . .yeah, I remember college. . . the hallowed sororities and fraternities. . .That was back in the day when pinning your steady girlfriend was more of a wrestling move and not a feature of rush week at Omega Gamma Globulin. <sigh young award>

I'm glad to know you were taking your shots - a prescription against defenestration, especially that hard to pin gal. How often did that little temptress render you lachrymose, or should we not go there so close to the day of lovers? ;):)

Dear D Akey, as a style Gothic is certainly more Northern and Eastern Europeas a phenomenon, but we have examples of some more gentle gothic churces in Italy too (see Orvieto Cathedral or some Siena painters contemporary of Giotto), as Barabarians they migrated from North and East Europe down into the Roman Empire (Goths and Visigoths). Anyway I should have a review on that.
If You refer to some passionate, darker and somehow macabre concept, wel,l I think You may find here in Italy places of past centuries which are really stunning and, in our perception, even morbid somehow,, with dressed skulls, skeletons etc. in many cases not publicly accessible, in connection with the idea that we have to realize our mortal doom and dedicate our effort to the nevending life as the ultimate objective.

You are very funny and entertaining. I always visit this place to see what you are saying ... the difficulty of the language does not bother me and I understand well the wit of the game with words. You guys are great, just missing a beer.

Mairzie, Lee & D'Akey,

Awoke to find my soul divine
Was captured in a Valentine
Superbly by Ms. Mairzie Dotes
In pink and hearts my image floats
Inspired thoughts from sweetest Lee,
And rounded out by D'Akey,
All sparked in me the thought sublime,
Will you each be my Valentine? :)

But as for Caesar, sad but true,
He'll steal your hearts and make you blue,
So watch your hearts when he's around,
He's such a dear but such a hound.
But still we can't neglect his gaze,
So here I'll offer him some praise,
A handsome devil is divine,
Attested by the gals in line,
Hearts await all to be broken
For his love that's just a token.
Some advice, beware his teaser,
And his aims to grab and squeeze her.

And so to close, to the and thine,
I hope you'll be my Valentine.
