GZ, had I noticed where I put the darn sun, I would have made the shadows go the OTHER WAY! Well, I guess a kid doesn't think of that, so that makes me feel better. And yes, it did bring out the inner kid in me... I got confused a lot due to paper texture. I realize now that a cel is one that I can draw on without the texture. But can you change texture after you have already started a painting? I know you can in Painter, but not familiar as much with this program.

Thanks for the sweet comment. :)

Thanks Albert... after spending 1/2 hour reading the manual, I read that this option was there. I have done this a few times just trying it out but for some reason I must not have a good grasp of layers yet because if I put it on the top layer, then of course reason is that it will supercede the layer under it. So basically if the layer on the top of the stack has the type of paper you want to use (I found you can't used colored paper), then the texture will be for the entire piece? I must be a dunce, why can't i figure this out? It would make my life so much easier!

I appreciate your time!

How can anyone not love a good rainbow?
Looked fun to do.

We did something like that in 2nd grade and we washed over the top with black india ink. And once it was dry we scratched out a drawing. Was remarkably fun.

You may want to overlay a new layer of black and make an eraser as small as you can and make a drawing that way.

Fun.

Pretty nice graphic drawing, sandyg!

I think it has some wonderful quality that the crayon doesn't really show off to great effect because you have a delicate and refined design sense here.

But it's really cool none the less as far as crayons go. Feels like a real crayon drawing too. Makes me want to lay on the floor with a box of crayons and go to town. Haha.

Nice touch you have.

D Akey

Mair, that's such a great look! you still provide a wonderful sentiment. It's almost asking for one of your warm tonal verses to appear like a recitation by the fountain under the lemon blossoms. Not sure which language you're going to use though -- the common tongue (English), or perhaps Greek, or what they spoke in Santorini before the eruption, or Sumeran. . .

I can't help but look at those old frescoes in archaeological digs, and picture the consciousness of the people of the time. And heck, I don't see a vast difference. Not really. Not if we were in the same context.

Your pic sends me on a similar flight of fancy. Why this picture is stimulating those thoughts? Maybe the arid earth colors, maybe the shape of the vase, and the broken lines of the flowers -- as if the wall upon which it was painted cracked and broke away. Maybe I'm tired and I can't stop the flood of associations. Heh.

This digital crayon drawing seems to pull at Time. Feels old, and new all at once. Evocative as all get out too. You created a blank canvas and my imagination is pouring out onto it all kinds of historic scenarios, distant times, distant peoples. . .

But I digress. . . Crap. Hold it a second, I got a pebble in my sandal.

(And I need to get some sleep apparently. I'm having a waking dream. I'm getting too old for all nighters for the sake of art, haha -- or maybe not.)

Taron,
Honestly, I have not seen a painting quite like this .... it stirs the
imagination in such gripping, foreboding but yet in deliciously dark
ways that I seem to have reached an impasse in expressing all of
my thoughts.... am spell bound and might I just utter ...............
HOLY SMOKES!!! The fantastic artistry, creativity and imagination is
unleashed, powerful, most exceptional .... a kid with a coloring book's
worst nightmare come true. I will hitherto, never, EVER look at a paint
tool with flippant detachment ever again. Waxing wonderful!!! :)

P.S.
Could the color of one of those crayons be, (gulp!) .... flesh??? :p ;)

D Akey,
Your most thoughtful response is most appreciated, thank you!
Obligations had temporarily taken me away from my thoroughly
enjoyable and expressive outlet, Art Rage and last night that
"gotta paint" instinct was much to strong to ignore ... just had
to pick up that Crayon tool and paint "something". Not certain
where the resulting forms came from but as the soft colors were
being applied to canvas, an image and interesting structure seemed
to appear. I only wish creating could be that easy all of the time
and darn, something you just said has stirred that poetic niche of
mine that may touch on the theme that you happened to notice in
the painting. Thanks once more for the most inspiring reply. :)

Taron, your creation is wonderful; as a relative novice, I thank you for showing what can be created with something as deceptively simple as an old fashioned box of Crayloa crayons (okay, okay...they're not old fashioned, they're not made by Crayola and they don't come in a box, but still.....)

Hi - I've had Artrage for a while now, and have never REALLY used it - but decided to give it a try. I've started drawing again (haven't drawn since high school - 1980s) - but now I've been using Photoshop... And this is my first post, so HI, also...

So, anyway, decided to give this Crayon project a shot, and here's my results...

Very nice first offering, Laura. And welcome to a great forum; I've only been posting for a few months and the folks here are very welcoming and extremely helpful (and I'll take all the help I can get...tend to need it). So join in all the fun and share your talent. jb

First Sign Of Spring.

Taking the challenge of working only with the Crayon tool... well, I did use the palette knife a bit too, and rulers, obviously :-) .

I posted this in the "Gallery" section as well as here, is that cheating?

I started out with the intention of ONLY using the crayon, but, when it comes to art, I'm a bit of a bully... get some color on the page and I pull a knife and push it around...lol. So here's the crayon (and palette knife) rose.

I've decided to take the "crayons only" challenge and came up with something rather simple but interesting since I was able to only use crayons. The affect turned out to be rather surprising for me. I call this one...blue moon...catchy huh? It was fun regardless!!!

Greetings een724,
As soon as I noticed your beautiful painting I immediately thought of the
song .... "Blue Moon" and it seems to fit the flavor of this, oh so romantic
entry. Just love your touching, artistic creation, it makes my heart sigh!
So very lovely is this blue moon, an inspirational and symbolic icon of the
poets! :)

Blue Moon ~

Blue moon, you saw me standin' alone
Without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own

Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me sayin' a prayer for
Someone I really could care for

And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper "please adore me"
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold

Blue moon, now I'm no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Mairzie...did you hear me laughing all the way from Missouri about your reference to the Blue Moon song?! I did have that song rolling around in my head as I was doing this drawing!!! lol......thanks for your kind words and added humor to this! Love that humor....can't live without it!

cbaer45,
What a wonderful painting ... such a beautifully creative rendering of
the sun and moon, two images that are my favorite representations of
much significance. Just love the attractive colors and presentation. It
almost appears as if the sun is touching the moon. Lovely thought and
well painted! :)

Turtleman,
If I were to weave a story around this piece it might be structured in this fashion ...
She may be misunderstood. She appears as standoffish, seemingly not capable
of reaching out ... but her cold attitude is only a protective posture. Arms that were
meant to embrace have been severed by an outside force not of her doing, she is
in pain but refuses to show this emotion because her worth may have been challenged.
She protects herself ... but behind that arrogent face is a broken heart.
In other words ... why don't men understand women and thank goodness at least one
person did ... the ingenious fellow that coined the term ... "Say it with flowers!" ;) :)
Provocative and creative! :)

I like it Martha. Not to worry... crayon and chalk are pretty much the same animal now in artrage 3.
love the asymmetrical ambiguous shapes... very compelling. I don't know why but it reminds me very much of a local artist's work. His name is Harold Balazs (pronounced blaze) and he is quite famous (round these parts anyway)... lots of sculptures around our little town and even a sculpture that sits in the river. He is quite noted for these kind of shapes... that is why I found it so intriguing.
