Thought I'd share with you some Rosean WiP from a painting I have been working on for about 3 month.

Started by taking these two photos mid summer for use as reference later on. June 2007.

Goal was to try and avoid my usual 1:1 photo-ref-copy method. So I decided to do a pencil sketch in real life first. I still ref'd from photo (since the flower was dead and gone at that time). This is a scan of the original 10x15 cm sketch. October 2007.

Did a quick colour test of the scanned pencil sketch. Added a layer with Hard Light merge method. Then added the colour quickly using crayons.

Contours traced using orange ArtRage-pencil.

My goal from the start was to do the underpaint in grayscale and add colour using merge modes later on. First leaf took quite some time. Had trouble to decide the range of grays I was to use how black/white should I do it?

Went over the entire head of the flower quickly with grays to get an idea of the whole.

Start of December I started work on the colour layers. The merge mode is all the time Overlay with 50-70% opacity.

Unfortunately it was not at all that easy to do the colouring as I had expected. It is as if the merge modes in ArtRage are unable to produce the colour ranges (hues/saturations) as I want it to.

At this point I gave up the painting for a while. Christmas coming and busy start of '08.

Finally got around to finishing it this evening. It's time to move on!

Hi DoodLS,

Your efforts pay off. It's a very beautiful flower painting and the WIPs are so interesting to look at. How you choose the color everything. I still don't understand what is underpainting. I knew there's topic about it.

Excellent work. :)

Hi Pai

Thank you very much. I still can't explain underpainting, really. All I can say is that it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be.

But I read this article
http://www.completedigitalphotography.com/?p=47
and I think he did a good job explaining. It's an article about photoshp, but since the merge-mode-math are similar it works in ArtRage too.

Really cool.
