I used a photo reference for this one, and made it more of a caricature. All done with the marker tool and eraser, in about 5 minutes.

@ idragosani, Neat mood you captured. Looks like an anti-hero or maybe even a grim hero who fights evil. Interesting effect with the multi-plane focus thing.

@ Davisa, What is it about dogs and bandanas? It makes them look so much like hippie dogs. Hahah. And they seem to always belong to a couple of very nice, but a little shameless, people.

2 PurpleSmash, Simpson inspired, yeah? Cool drawing. I have to ask, what's an emo? Is that short for an emotion?

Thanks! Oddly enough, even though I used a random photo reference and caricatured it a bit, the end result came out looking like my older son. Maybe it was a subconscious kind of thing... 8)

Nice GZ although I do not know whether it's a manga or an hentai whatever they mean (never understood the difference nor interested too much to search for). :D

I think hentai is the subset of manga that goes in the After 9 section -- and you might hear someone cry out: "Hentai me, you cad!". . .

or was that 'untie me'? They sound so similar.

Damn... even if not interrested you should learn the difference between hentai and manga.

A manga is a japanese comic.

The mangaka (person who draws manga) draws different kind of manga.
You don't have to learn all the categories : shone, shojo...etc... but hentai is very specific : it's porn.

So if you don't know : juste put manga in your head ^^

Some people are more reluctant to use 'manga' to define a picture that is not truely a japanese comic, because a manga is a comic, it's not only a way of drawing character with big eyes and so on. (some manga are more reallistic... Blade of immortal for example (i think this is the english title).

I hope I was not too boring (and that I didn't use the bad words... i'm not a native english speaker)

Nice pic anyway Gz : is it misa from the manga deathnote ?

Yup, it is called Blade of the Immortal in it's English translation. Here is an image from the series as an example for anyone interested:

I happen to love Hiroaki Samura's style. 8)

It is a guitar player named Bou from the Japanese rock group called
An Cafe. He left the group recently. He is an adorable little guy and actually looks a lot like a little girl. He has a tremendous following I guess among young people. :D

Emo is kind of the new younger version of Goth, with extra angst thrown in.
Androgynous sexuality, pop t-shirts, black nails, black dyed hair with color streaks, extra eye make-up, buttons, piercings, mis-matched socks, colorful scarves, really colorful and often mis-matched tennis shoes and laces. Tight low riding jeans with studded belts. That's my take on the fashion end of it. :D
Nice drawing stellaria11.
Thanks D Akey, et al.

Like Frank Zappa said, (paraphrasing) "No genre of music ever made it that you couldn't dress up to."

I think what he was getting at was they all had their own specific style of attire along with their music.

So it's called Emo, huh? Goth with attitude. That's like salting your salt. Hahah.

Love it.

screenpainter
03-07-2008, 01:27 PM
Yeah, I just covered the fashion. There is a music being classified as emo too. And I suppose generational attitudes they are attaching to the genre as well.

Thanks Ubuntu. I know what You mean. That cartoon drawings style vaguely reminding classics was absolutely wonderful.
You should also look for Asterix comics by the now mising Goscinny and Uderzo (I do not know whether they're still familiar to young people).
Actually they were pure genious and very instructive too, kidding with each country stereotypes, but also accurate reminders of histories, architecture and so on. There are also a lot of classic citations and it's translated in a huge number of languages, dead ones too as Latin!

Classic drawing Ceasar...it reminded me of my childhood reading Asterix books! If you're unfamiliar with Asterix, its most certainly worth a look...anyway...they had a Julius Cesar character, who looked a little like this...

I do know Asterix, dear Clumsy and I used to read them.
They're a French comix and one of the two original guys, Uderzo, was Italian and a relative of him was in this Forum some time ago.
Moreover Asterix is wonderfully translated in many languages with their superb words' jokes. There's also a Latin version.
Finally the pirates always cite some literary Latin reference statement when sinking after meeting with the Gauls! A really superlative and cultyrally tasty funny comics!

cLuMsY_joel
07-31-2008, 10:44 AM
oh totally!

The jokes all work in English too...for example the druid is called Get-a-Fix and the chief is called Vital-statis-tix!!

I read them all as a child, along with Herge's Adventures of Tintin...I have no doubt they shaped my appreciation/love of art/cartoons.

Retro NES shirt, sadness (no color in hair because color + happy = punk, not emo, generally, i think.)

Seems everyone attaches, I'm allowed to use my own webspace right? I don't know why I wouldn't be able to since the option is there.

He wants to wear black, but it's all dirty and he likes the shirt so wore jeans with it cause it matches. oh the agony!

Ok, here it is as promised. My contribution. This is a character from a web strip I worked on a few years ago called Deeply Creepy. Her name is Angel Graves and she was employed by the local Hot Topic-esque shop at the mall. I didn't have enough time to do it in color, though.

An Emo is a teenage boy that tries to get attention/girls by playing on his feelings or being " overly emotionel" and dramatic hence the nickname "Emo". Not really a goth or a punk, but the name now seems to have devoloped into consisting girls that are overly emotionel and dramatic as well.
