I had followed the instructions MattRage provided to improve speed issues. It caused the device to go into recovery mode. This can be a disaster if you're away from your PC and don't have a backup.

You enter recovery mode if you have a USB cable plugged in, and are holding the home button during boot up. They could add a note in the instructions to release the home button as soon as the device is powered down.
You can only enter recovery mode with a USB cable plugged in. (As far as I know.) So you would always be near a PC.
Also, if you don't want to recover your iPad, just hold down Power and Home until the device turns off. Then press power to turn it on. It will boot normally.
I'll add a note to the post to inform people of that, it's not something we had reported before but it does sound like it's worth noting.
